Main difference between DC & Balto

The jogging.

You can't swing a cat in the district without hitting a jogger.

I once saw a man running in downtown Baltimore.  But it wasn't jogging.

The main difference is that while people from both cities bitch about having to go to see a show in the other city, only Baltimore folks actually make the trip down to DC. DCbies very rarely hike it up to charm city. But that's cause almost all of the good shows come here.

That trip between Baltimore and Washington poses a nearly insurmountable psychological barrier.  It's not that far, but that stretch of I-95 is *so boring* that it's almost impossible to do.  The B-W Parkway is slightly less painful, but there you get inexplicable random backups that can turn a 45-minute trip into a 2-hour trip with no warning.

Imagine how cool it would be if there was real high-speed rail, like in civilized countries, and you could make the trek up there in 15 min?

well, in that case, the fat cats would be working to make everyone's lives better, rather than a handful of sports fans.

 1. I think there would be more than a handful of sports fans at a baseball game in DC, and

 2. Why would everyone's lives be better if there were a high-speed train that goes from just DC to  Baltimore? DC to NYC, okay. But, would that many people need to get to Baltimore that quickly? Would that need really require to build a billion-dollar railway system?

Its an hour-long drive! An for that theory that the I-95 drive is boring that its impossible to deal with...when is driving anywhere on the highway exciting?

well, perhaps a high speed railway system isnt the necessity. but a better MARC trains system would be nice!

The MARC train doesnt even RUN on the weekends!!! and i doubt it runs past 10pm on weekdays.  the railway system is in place, but due to limited hours and the fact that Penn Station and Camden stations in Baltimore are not really located within walking distance to anything fun in Baltimre (except the stadiums) that its just not used.

In Boston, you can catch the train to Providence whenever you want almost, and its highly accessible and easy to use. and in turn, commutes between the two, benefit both cities.

well, there is an amtrak train that leaves baltimore for d.c. around 1 am and another at 6 am. . .but then, who rides amtrak.  and it's cheaper to just rent a car anyway.

yeah, I'm thinking a high-speed and subsidized extension of Metro, with double tracks for express trains, where for like 5 bucks you could be travel from Metro Center to Baltimore in 30 minutes.  One could do something similar with an express Metro line to Richmond.

those are some tall orders!!!  baltimore can't even salt/sand thier roads when it snows!!!!

the roads were a total DISASTER last night. completely unacceptable.

and as i was stuck on the highway last night, i thought "all this to save a buck, probably"

For one thing, Metro probably wouldn't pay for it because the Metro Board is made up of folks from DC, Maryland and Virginia. I'm sure the VA folks won't particularly care about putting money towards a project that will mostly affect Maryland.
