If you try hard enough, you can get an escalator to destroy any pair of shoes.

Nearly got caught skipping class in the 7th grade after heading down to hollywood park and my buddy forcing his vans on to the side of the escalator.  It tore off the rubber strip that encircles the sole of the shoe.  This flap was then sucked into the step as it was closing and his shoe was subsequently stuck in the escalator, caused a huge scene (luckily he was able to get his foot out of the shoe in time) and we got free cokes and hot dogs for the rest of the day.

Could they please extend the flip flop ban to the workplace as well?

Actually, limiting those ugly things to only the beach, the pool, or the shower would be great.

Thank you for your cooperation ladies (and guys swishy enough to wear them). I know with your help, we can make it a better, more attractive world.

Here is that article:

  http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/i-heart-dc/marty-royle-reads-at-a-4th-grade-level-2/

And a more recent discussion of the Black Cat's many, many rules here:

  http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/byt-recommends/best-weekend-bets-29/

Add to that list the latest one - no video allowed backstage prior to a show even if band and management ok's ahead of time.  We had to cancel our BYT Sessions with Dead Meadow the day of because of this.  But check out our recent one with French Kicks as a consolation prize:

Don't think he mentioned not being able to wear flip-flops but one of the many "boo black cat! RNR Hotel is better!" drones who commented did but I could be wrong.

Wow someone really loves to bitch and complain. It's funny how you have to keep showing info from your site regarding the "many many rules of the Black Cat."  Drumming up web traffic or just want people to see how much you whine and bitch?

My suggestion is, if you have that many issues with The Black Cat's rules, move your parties to a 21+ instead of an all ages venue, where all those rules you're so much against, won't be in place.

Do you think that maybe they only subject you to some of the rules you've mentioned because you and your site have probably been a huge pain in the ass to them?  Just a thought.

First off, I didn't write the article, just commented on it.

I don't understand what 21+ has to do with it... 9:30 Club and Rock & Roll Hotel for example don't have as many rules and they're all ages.

Someone else referenced the article first, how is linking to it not relevant?  It included a discussion on the flip flop ban at the Cat from 7 months ago, hence appropriate (also there are currently no paying ads on the site this month).

The third link I added was to show an example of what could have been done at the Black Cat with Dead Meadow if they would have allowed it, to prove it was something that was unobtrusive and cool.

Actually 930 Club does not allow sharpies for the same reason as the Cat. They'll allow gloves but stop you every two seconds to check your hand stamp if you have a drink in hand. They won't let you bring in outside food. They may not ban flip flops, but as Josh said, common sense and would tell people, just like at the Cat that those shoes aren't really appropriate. 930 Club won't let you stand on the stairwell either nor in doorways blocking traffic. They don't allow pro photography at a lot of their events either.

So...I don't see much difference between those two. As for the RnR Hotel, it's already been mentioned about the things they do as a club which seems to appeal to you more since you do a lot of events there and have less problems.  So, if coke on pool tables is your thing and having an unsafe club environment then why not just keep doing your underage events there? Otherwise, instead of bitching, just deal with the rules that are in place. No one is forcing you to do anything at the Cat. Then again, maybe theREALHunter is right, perhaps it's because you and/or your site whenever they do something at the Cat are a bunch of pain in the arses...  ;)

I happened to be entering the Black Cat for Daniel Johnston the same time that an apparent representative of BYT was trying to bring in cupcakes (which was mentioned in an earlier linked article) then pled ignorance as to why they were even bringing them in, if I had been working the door I would've grabbed that shit and thrown it out on the fucking sidewalk for having my time wasted   :D

Ahem.

9:30 Club does not confiscate Sharpies, well, at least not mine, they simply tell me if they catch me using it for graffiti they'll kill me.  Fair enough.  Black Cat actually took mine.  And they are a much less classy joint, which is part of the charm, yet have rules that (to me) seem at odds with their indie music/punk rock club image.

With bringing in outside food, I was performing at the club that night, not a patron, not sure what 9:30 Club's rules are in that respect, but other venues are cool with it on special occasions. For instance, I have bought everyone pizza at the Hotel when DJing there, and many times at Cosmo Lounge when I used to DJ there, but again haven't tried at 9:30 Club.  Since Black Cat wouldn't let me buy pizza for the Bliss dance party, I had someone make cupcakes, because I've seen cupcakes there for people's bday parties before, but they wouldn't let the chick that made them through the door, as someone stated above, not sure what happened though as I wasn't actually there.

9:30 Club doesn't put show posters in the stairwell or have a confusing two ticket system, so moot point dude.

And you're simply wrong about pro-photography.  The artist on a particular night sets the rules on photography at 9:30 Club.  That's how we've shot a million 9:30 Club shows.  The Black Cat sets their own camera policy, even if the artist wants otherwise.  For instance, no professional photography at DJ nights even if the DJ wants it, and no flash photography at shows even if the artist wants it.  Rock and Roll Hotel doesn't have any rules unless an artist specifically requests something.

Again, the point of bringing these issues to light is that you have a great club, but it has potential to be better.  And the proof that it can be better is to look at what the competing clubs do.  DC9, 9:30 Club, Rock and Roll Hotel, Red and Black, Velvet Lounge, etc. all have less rules than the Cat.  Not sure why you're so sensitive about me "bitching", isn't that what this forum is for?

Finally in response to TheREALHunter - we've given many clubs/venues in DC tons and tons of free publicity/advertising for over a year now, we have great relationships with all the venues we work with, and we work with them all the same way, and they have all been appreciative. The only place we've ever had any issues at all is The Cat.

Secondly, the specific night at the Cat you are referring to (with the food and what not) that I was DJing at, we set a record for paid attendance on the backstage for Bliss.  To me, that doesn't sound like a pain in the ass.

Again, I like going to the Cat, I like the bartenders at the Cat, I've been going there ever since I moved here in 2001, but I think many of their rules are arbitrary, they do not allow me to put on the best show I can, they don't allow cool things to happen (Dead Meadow backstage session for instance), and they are adding more rules on a seemingly monthly basis while other clubs with similar clientele and similar sizes are not.

LOL! I personally would have taken them, and ate them. I don't need to worry about my girlish figure.  ;)

And what's so confusing? The 930 Club also has two different tickets. You either have one you bought from TicketBastard, or a carnival/raffle style ticket for purchasing it at the door. I don't full agree with the way it gets kinda crowded at the Cat with will call, etc all at one place, but still I don't know what the whole confusion is. You're given the raffle ticket to gain entry upstairs and you get to keep that TicketBastard stub for memories. If there wasn't the red room using the same entrance, I'm sure just the TicketBastard tickets would be accepted, you'd get a stamp and you're in.

Right, but at the Cat if you bring your Ticketmaster ticket to the desk, they trade you for a raffle ticket which you then have to walk through the flow of traffic to hand to another person for them to put in a bucket and stamp.  Why not just get the stamp at the desk with your ticketmaster ticket or if you're paying cash they can tear a ticket off for record keeping behind the scenes and then stamp you.

Not confusing after you've done it, but confusing to new people, who then get yelled at for being confused.  This helps to created the black cat front door clusterfuck.

Anyway, this is just a minor issue, my point is, there are tons of these minor issues, all these rules and procdedures at The Cat that don't exist anywhere else.

Since you didn't respond to anything else I wrote I'm assuming you agree with everything I said?  Sweet.

i think people that wear flip-flops to concerts are big fat losers anyway.

i have a deep seeded hatred for flip flops.

two years ago in chicago at a lolla aftershow with Blackalicious the House of Blues was FILLED to the gills with chubby white midwesterners with flip flops just gettin "crizunk" (?).

it was awful and i left wanting to make my own t-shirt reading "Flip-Flops are NOT Hip-Hop"

so thank you, Black Cat, for banning the one thing i openly admit to irrationly loathe  :)
