these last four posts made me LOL!

FLIP FLOPS PEOPLE!  The TOPIC is FLIP FLOPS!

but I do think it is totally hilarious that Cale, who is definitely a dude, just admitted to carrying a purse.  Do you have flip flops in the purse?  Do you think that if you stashed the flip flops in the purse the staff at the Cat would let you in with them?  Or would they go the way of the Sharpie?

9:30 Club does not confiscate Sharpies, well, at least not mine, they simply tell me if they catch me using it for graffiti they'll kill me.  Fair enough.  Black Cat actually took mine.  And they are a much less classy joint, which is part of the charm, yet have rules that (to me) seem at odds with their indie music/punk rock club image.

With bringing in outside food, I was performing at the club that night, not a patron, not sure what 9:30 Club's rules are in that respect, but other venues are cool with it on special occasions. For instance, I have bought everyone pizza at the Hotel when DJing there, and many times at Cosmo Lounge when I used to DJ there, but again haven't tried at 9:30 Club.  Since Black Cat wouldn't let me buy pizza for the Bliss dance party, I had someone make cupcakes, because I've seen cupcakes there for people's bday parties before, but they wouldn't let the chick that made them through the door, as someone stated above, not sure what happened though as I wasn't actually there.

9:30 Club doesn't put show posters in the stairwell or have a confusing two ticket system, so moot point dude.

And you're simply wrong about pro-photography.  The artist on a particular night sets the rules on photography at 9:30 Club.  That's how we've shot a million 9:30 Club shows.  The Black Cat sets their own camera policy, even if the artist wants otherwise.  For instance, no professional photography at DJ nights even if the DJ wants it, and no flash photography at shows even if the artist wants it.  Rock and Roll Hotel doesn't have any rules unless an artist specifically requests something.

Again, the point of bringing these issues to light is that you have a great club, but it has potential to be better.  And the proof that it can be better is to look at what the competing clubs do.  DC9, 9:30 Club, Rock and Roll Hotel, Red and Black, Velvet Lounge, etc. all have less rules than the Cat.  Not sure why you're so sensitive about me "bitching", isn't that what this forum is for?

Finally in response to TheREALHunter - we've given many clubs/venues in DC tons and tons of free publicity/advertising for over a year now, we have great relationships with all the venues we work with, and we work with them all the same way, and they have all been appreciative. The only place we've ever had any issues at all is The Cat.

Secondly, the specific night at the Cat you are referring to (with the food and what not) that I was DJing at, we set a record for paid attendance on the backstage for Bliss.  To me, that doesn't sound like a pain in the ass.

Again, I like going to the Cat, I like the bartenders at the Cat, I've been going there ever since I moved here in 2001, but I think many of their rules are arbitrary, they do not allow me to put on the best show I can, they don't allow cool things to happen (Dead Meadow backstage session for instance), and they are adding more rules on a seemingly monthly basis while other clubs with similar clientele and similar sizes are not.
I think it's pretty clear the black cat could look the other way on a bunch of this stuff if it chose to, but why would they want to go out of their way to appease a bunch of annoying, coked-up scene whores? [/b]
Sigh. Seriously?  Aren't you tired of typing out that same label since 2006?  I've said it before and I'll say it again - let us know where these uber hip BYT currated coke parties are so we can attend, cause everyone here behind the scenes is old and tired. (hint: the web site is tongue firmly in cheek)

Anyway, to honestly answer your question on why the Black Cat would want to appease...

a patron: Because the Cat has more competition now than before

a performer: Because they bring money to the club

BYT: Because they bring money to the club

And dude, they're going out of their way to create and enforce the silly rules, not the other way around.

I am a straight guy.  But since I carry make-up and moisturizer in my purse, I'm not about to call it a bag or man-bag or messenger bag or murse or whatever.  It's a fucking purse with travel size hair product in it.

Secondly - fuck flip flops.  I don't wear them, I think men look like douches when they do wear them, and nobody should be wearing them to rock and roll shows.  It's the fact that the Cat has to go out of their way to ban them and not allow entry when someone is wearing them and make a big deal out of it that I was commenting on.

Sorry you got that impression, perhaps my tone was lost in internet translation, but neither I nor anyone that runs BYT feels like we are the god's gift to anything or that anyone needs us (bands/scene/venues)

What I was trying to say is we get lot's of love from local bands and venues on a regular basis.  People like working with us.  Local bands like when we feature them with as much care as we do national signed acts.  Venues like us because we drive people to their events.  And if we didn't, you're absolutely right, someone else would, we're not naive.  Anybody can do what we do, we just happen to be doing it is all.

PS. I've never actually heard a Fall Out Boy or Good Charlotte song, the core team that runs BYT is old and mostly maile (I turned 29 today), and we get about 4,000 individual users looking at the site a day)

Sorry, you're not the first, you're not the last, and the scene doesn't need you to keep going.  Sure, venues aren't going to be total jerks to you, and will accomidate your fantasy of being legitemate internet journalists to a certain point, because it's decent PR; but don't expect them to bend over backwards to you as if their survival depends on your wesbsite's two dozen hits per day.

A guy who wears make-up and carries a purse accusing guys who wear flip-flops of being "douches" is right up there with a guy who labels every member of the military a "dumbass" accusing other people of being elitist.

Not trying to be elitist or uber indie.  I seriously have never heard either.  I know that some dude from Good Charlotte came to a party I was at one time and I think it was a big deal because he is dating someone famous right?  I'm ridiculously ignorant to this kind of thing.  I think maaaybe I've heard a Fall Out Boy remix?  Oh wait, found it: Of All The Gun Joints In All The World (Tommie Sunshine's Brooklyn Fire Retouch) from the 'Snakes on a Plane' soundtrack that I was sent to for free via Musebox.  It's not on the ipod though which means I listened to it at one point, marked it with a single star, and removed it next time I synced.  Really, not trying to be cool here, in fact, I wish I at least had a passing knowledge of top 40, I've been trying to listen to all the top 40 stuff at least once in the past couple years just so I'll be familiar.  Sorry   :(
