i have a deep seeded hatred for flip flops.

two years ago in chicago at a lolla aftershow with Blackalicious the House of Blues was FILLED to the gills with chubby white midwesterners with flip flops just gettin "crizunk" (?).

it was awful and i left wanting to make my own t-shirt reading "Flip-Flops are NOT Hip-Hop"

so thank you, Black Cat, for banning the one thing i openly admit to irrationly loathe   :)
THANK YOU for bringing the discussion back to the topic!!!!!  I wouldn't have started the thread if I thought it would devolve into a debate about whether BC's other rules are stupid or not (something that has been done ad nauseum over on BYT).  I think banning flip flops at shows is a good thing.

I have probably been to ~100 shows at the new Black Cat and other than the "21 to drink" and "no stage diving" rules, I haven't been aware of all these other allegedly suffocating regulations.

what's the big deal, really? i mean, nothing says old school DC punk rock than making people follow a bunch of strict/unnecessary rules.

And I'm pretty sure I've seen stage diving at AWK shows.  Then again, I don't normally do fey things like bringing cupcakes to shows.

We let members of the Dresden Dolls fan club bring cupcakes into Rams Head Live. They werent selling them or anything.

Not that I understand the premise of the system, but the belly-aching over the ticket process at the Cat is insane (and inane).  It's true, it may cost you 3.5 seconds, though I doubt it takes up even that much time.  If the process has something to do with the ability to go in and out of the Red Room without a ticket for the show that night, I'm all for it.

And like GGW, I've never encountered another odd rule.  Of course, my days of carrying sharpies around in my pocket are...oh, right, I never had those days.

Good question...what's the sharpie for?  Autographs?  Beyond that, what would you need a sharpie for?  I'm honestly curious.

I actually carry a Sharpie in my purse at all times. And it's come in handy more times than you can count. Unlike pens, they write on anything and I can count on them in any situation.

With bringing in outside food, I was performing at the club that night, not a patron, not sure what 9:30 Club's rules are in that respect, but other venues are cool with it on special occasions. For instance, I have bought everyone pizza at the Hotel when DJing there, and many times at Cosmo Lounge when I used to DJ there, but again haven't tried at 9:30 Club.  Since Black Cat wouldn't let me buy pizza for the Bliss dance party, I had someone make cupcakes, because I've seen cupcakes there for people's bday parties before, but they wouldn't let the chick that made them through the door, as someone stated above, not sure what happened though as I wasn't actually there.

9:30 Club doesn't put show posters in the stairwell or have a confusing two ticket system, so moot point dude.

And you're simply wrong about pro-photography.  The artist on a particular night sets the rules on photography at 9:30 Club.  That's how we've shot a million 9:30 Club shows.  The Black Cat sets their own camera policy, even if the artist wants otherwise.  For instance, no professional photography at DJ nights even if the DJ wants it, and no flash photography at shows even if the artist wants it.  Rock and Roll Hotel doesn't have any rules unless an artist specifically requests something.

Again, the point of bringing these issues to light is that you have a great club, but it has potential to be better.  And the proof that it can be better is to look at what the competing clubs do.  DC9, 9:30 Club, Rock and Roll Hotel, Red and Black, Velvet Lounge, etc. all have less rules than the Cat.  Not sure why you're so sensitive about me "bitching", isn't that what this forum is for?

Finally in response to TheREALHunter - we've given many clubs/venues in DC tons and tons of free publicity/advertising for over a year now, we have great relationships with all the venues we work with, and we work with them all the same way, and they have all been appreciative. The only place we've ever had any issues at all is The Cat.

Secondly, the specific night at the Cat you are referring to (with the food and what not) that I was DJing at, we set a record for paid attendance on the backstage for Bliss.  To me, that doesn't sound like a pain in the ass.

Again, I like going to the Cat, I like the bartenders at the Cat, I've been going there ever since I moved here in 2001, but I think many of their rules are arbitrary, they do not allow me to put on the best show I can, they don't allow cool things to happen (Dead Meadow backstage session for instance), and they are adding more rules on a seemingly monthly basis while other clubs with similar clientele and similar sizes are not.
I think it's pretty clear the black cat could look the other way on a bunch of this stuff if it chose to, but why would they want to go out of their way to appease a bunch of annoying, coked-up scene whores?

Exactly.

No, I mean, I have a purse that I take everywhere, I fill it with things I might need, like a Sharpie. At the Cat, the only thing I have used it for in the past was autographs.

Seriously, this chick is acting like her little website is God's gift to the local scene or something.  The reality is, there have always been websites like BYT that come and go, always run by late-high school or college aged girls (and sometimes a dude or two) who are about two years evolved from being Good Charlotte's or Fall Out Boy's biggest fans, and now think they're doing everyone (including bands, fans and the venues) a favor by existing.

Sorry, you're not the first, you're not the last, and the scene doesn't need you to keep going.  Sure, venues aren't going to be total jerks to you, and will accomidate your fantasy of being legitemate internet journalists to a certain point, because it's decent PR; but don't expect them to bend over backwards to you as if their survival depends on your wesbsite's two dozen hits per day.
