best 90's albums. help me out!
« on: June 21, 2008, 12:21:00 pm »
I'm a long-time reader but rare poster of these forums (mostly the just announced and hey seth boards) and i figure you all would be the best to ask for help with buying a good 90's collection.

i.e. what are the best pixies/bloody valentine/sonic youth albums to go with? or any other bands i just must listen to.  educate me.

If you want the best of the Pixies and Sonic Youth you're in the wrong decade.  Try the 80's instead.

I actually like Pitchfork, but I think their nineties list was pretty lame.  There might be only fifteen albums on there that I would define as essential.  Pitchfork did a much better job with the seventies and eighties.

At least they had the sense to put NMH over Nevermind. The link I posted had MBV #1 and Pitchfork had it #2. They were both on the right track with that one. MBV took elements of what got the J&MC rolling and ran with it.

As someone who was actually alive in the 80's and saw sonic youth in said decade....I say pfft wrongo x 10 to you.

Goo is a good album, Dirty is ok, but Daydream Nation is by far their masterpiece and one of the best records of the era.  Sister is not far behind.  None of their 90's stuff comes close to either of these two. (imho).  Sorry, but your smoking crack if you think their best work came in the 90's.

I don't think those are their best albums, either, but they are pretty darn good and she's looking for good stuff that came out in the 90s.  Though Goo might be my second or third favorite Sonic Youth album.  You didn't have to be alive in the 80s to spot good music - I have the others, too.
