Looks like we all have to hate wicked weed now.

I only got to wear my t-shirt once. $20 for one wear. That's as bad a value as their overrated sours.

LOL... the hate already begins.

P.S. Their sours are the only beers they have worth drinking.

Funkatorium (Asheville, NC) All Wicked Weed sours, all the time. Informative tour, a little awkward as we were the only three people on the tour. I think I tried maybe 14 different tasters over the course of two visits. All very good, many very excellent. Great bottle shop (only Wicked Weed beers)

So because they were just aquired, the beer has gone from very good/excellent to overrated? I will say at least inbev finally bought an actual good brewery.

what about Elysium?

and Goose Island is all over the place -they have uninteresting stuff for the mainstream(honkers, their IPA, etc) but they also have some excellent offerings: BCBS, their sours, their belgians...

Can't say I like Elysian other than maybe Space Dust (I think that's what it's called).

Re: Goose Island, I'd say the bad beers outweigh the goods, but yeah, I'll drink a Lolita any day of the week.

I've lived in Asheville for 3 years and have seen a decline in respect for Wicked Weed amongst the locals simply because of the company's financial origins and its rapid growth that, while bringing tons of tourist dollars to the town, doesn't seem to garner any long-term community. While breweries like Burial and Hi-Wire are taking it slow and steady and creating more events and projects designed to generate sustainable growth within the community, it seems like WW has only really been concerned with the bottom line since just about day one.


Regarding their financial origins:

COO of Gunthy Renker (aka Proactiv) has been their primary financier.

Does Beltway do anything remarkable on their own? I mean I know some outstanding Grimm beers are brewed there, but what about actual Beltway beers?

And does Stillwater truly count as local beer given its gypsy brewing status?

It seems like one would be hard pressed to get from DC to Richmond in 90 mins most times of day, but if you're going to include Richmond, you have to include The Answer.

To legitimately go from downtown DC to downtown Richmond in 90 minutes would involve a phalanx of police cars escorting you and clearing the roads ahead. I've never gotten DC to RVA in 90 minutes even in the middle of the night.

I have heard that a group of teenagers can make it from southern Montgomery County to Doswell, VA in well under 90 minutes.

Remember when Constellation bought Ballast Point and Lagunitas sold 50% of their ownership (despite the owner never claiming he would never sell out?). Well guess what - Sculpin and Victory at Sea are still excellent beers.

Meanwhile Lagunitas is still churning out hits like Born Again, Waldo, and High West-ified Imperial Coffee Stout... beers that are nationally distributed and easy to purchase (for a very affordable price point, I might add).

I don't know, I could really care less. In the end it's a larger footprint for a brewery that makes some great sours.

And meanwhile other smaller, independent, up and coming breweries can't get tap or shelf space because the companies that own Ballast Point and Lagunitas make deals so that Ballast Point and Lagunitas can have more shelf and tap space.
