Oh puh-leeze. Their IPA isn't even in the top 100 among IPA's I've tried.

congrats, you're someone who doesn't like their style of IPA.  you like "modern", west-coast style IPAs - which DB doesn't make.  saying that it's not in your top 100 is meaningless to anyone except you.

According to Devil's Backbone, that's the style they DO make. And there's doesn't compare favorably to numerous others, imo and in the opinion of 753 raters on Beer Advocate, where it is scoring a middling 83.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This pale bronze beer is medium in body with intense hop flavor and aroma. Our IPA is brewed in the style of the ?west coast? with robust hop character coming from American grown varieties of hops. IPA?s are amongst the most popular craft brewed beers as they have moderate strength and tons of flavor. This is not your Grandfathers beer! 5.9% alcohol by volume, 60 IBUs

What's so special about "brewing to style"?

it's one of many approaches to brewing.  clearly it doesn't impress you (again, congrats!).  those styles developed for a reason - they taste good, reflected a consensus on taste, etc.  the precision and control of process is impressive, for some (again, clearly not you). 

all this noise reminds me of someone who doesn't like modern art, goes to a modern art showing, and then complains that the art was terrible and he/she can't understand why anyone would go there.  how insightful.  says nothing about the art, only tells us about the complainer's opinions.

And all the noise to me about "brewing to style" reminds me of someone who thinks art is and always should be in the style of Da Vinchi, or Van Gogh, or whoever. If artists were concerned with creating "to style" we would have never gotten to modern art.

Not that there's not a point to brewing "to style", or creating art "to style". But when that becomes the basis for winning contests, that seems lame. And in turn if winning contests is proof of brewery quality, that's lame. When all it really is is proor of conformity and being good at playing it safe.

also, I tried a sort of sour beer, as it is called, from boulevard, tell tale tart.  I liked it and now have this sort of passion to get into sour beers, having never really tried sour beer or know much about them.  basically, where should I go to next for an excellent sour in bottle from a beer store, that sells good beer and rips you off on the price, just like any small business owner, will.  thank you.

try Duchesse De Bourgogne (if you can get it where you are) and don't look back.

I can find it where I live, so I bought one, and now I am, in love.  in . . . love.  the most unique beer I have ever tasted, but a nose to knock you over.  damn, I posted again.

I really like it too one of my favorite sours that is  available
 (although some here have complained that their tap lines are dank...so you should get bottles)

this one is also well worth checking out (but harder to find)

I knew you would enjoy the Duchesse. It does have a funk to it but I dig the smell. Tastes like nothing else . its back on tap at 9:30? nice. It was gone for some time. Its real damn expensive there when they have it. That lambic is awesome too.

The tickets for the DC Brau thing do not cover beer unfortunately. All I know is last time The Sword played DC it was $30 just for them w/ Royal Thunder opening. $45 for all of those bands is still a tad expensive but Kvelertak is all the way from Norway. Free beer comes with the V.I.P. ticket though. Also you can get into a free pre-event show at DC9 with the DC Brau ticket. Black Dog Prowl and Wild Throne are at that. I think there are free shuttle busses running from the Rhode Island Metro stop all day to the brewery too.
You can volunteer and get into the event for free last I checked.

I love this beer... picked up a half of a case yesterday (the space instincts in me do find this a little over priced, but I don't care) and stumbled upon a bottle of KBS as well.

I was able to get a few bottles of KBS.  Most places were limiting customers to one or two bottles.  I ended up drinking a 2015 KBS I had cellared for the year, but haven't cracked one from this year yet.  Anyone tried it?  What do you think?  This was my first time trying it.  I thought it was very good, but overall, I think I prefer BCBS. 

At this point, it's more of a early spring tradition to try and snag bottles. Is it a good beer, sure... Is it the whale it was a few years ago, no... Does it hold up to numerous other offerings out there today, no... Is BCBS better, yes.

I was able to get a few bottles of KBS.  Most places were limiting customers to one or two bottles.  I ended up drinking a 2015 KBS I had cellared for the year, but haven't cracked one from this year yet.  Anyone tried it?  What do you think?  This was my first time trying it.  I thought it was very good, but overall, I think I prefer BCBS. 

At this point, it's more of a early spring tradition to try and snag bottles. Is it a good beer, sure... Is it the whale it was a few years ago, no... Does it hold up to numerous other offerings out there today, no... Is BCBS better, yes.

Plus, one bottle of KBS is $6-8 bucks whereas one bottle of BCBS is $9-$12. Yes, you get five ounces more of BCBS in a bottle, but when you're drinking beer that high in abv, do you really need more than 12 ounces? And isn't KBS' coroporate ties arguably less evil than those of BCBS (stevewizzle, what do you think?)

I picked up two four packs of the Kirsch Gose. Planning on drinking one side by side with an Ommegang Rosetta. When I get around to it. Such a backlog of beer to drink. Anyway, I know, slightly different styles, but will be interesting to compare the cherry flavors.

I've had a couple of sour stouts (Bruery, Allagash), just don't think they're my thing. At least not this point in time.

The Clutch beer gets pretty mediocre ratings (49th percentile for wild ales).

Step out of the DC bubble and read some of the Beer Advocate forums and you'll constantly find people bitching about beer prices and breaking it down by the cost per ounce.

Sour stouts are pretty rare. The Bruery's Tart of Darkness is maybe the most famous one. I love it. 3 Brothers had one that was really great as well. Mad Fox's Crazy Ivan was also soured and was quite tasty. They even bottled it. I never had the Allagash one though.

Who cares if Clutch was rated poorly by snobs. It was still a very unique and tasty beer. This new one will not be the same beer as last time anyway.
