I'm going through a bit of a Queen obsession at the moment, primarily because I was in a particularly grumpy mood the other day while driving to the Metro and that new classic rock station served up "Killer Queen" and it completely changed my mood.   So I've blasting some Queen greatest hits in the car, for the short trips around the hood.

It dawned on me that a whole lot of Indie Rock bands could use more inspiration from Queen.  Where is the swagger, the hooks, the soaring vocals, when was the last time you air drummed to a Indie Rock band.

agreed, but how many bands have been panned as being "queen rip-offs"?

damned if you do, damned if you don't...

I'm not saying that bands need to start sounding exactly like Queen or become Queen rip-offs, partly because there was only one Freddie Mercury.  What they need to do is stop jumping on the latest indie rock craze and develop their own sound, using bands like Queen for inspiration.

One of my favorite records of the last decade came from Splitsville, a little heard band outside of the power pop scene.  Anyways, you can tell the band members grew up listening to Queen, KISS, The Beatles, Beach Boys etc, but they were able to bring those influences together and still create a sound of their own.  They also recorded the best Coldplay/Keane song I've ever heard.

"I Was Born To Love You" is a really great and somewhat forgotten or overlooked Freddie Mercury song.

"A Night at the Opera" is such a great album, especially the transition of going from "The Prophet's Song" to "Love of my Life".

Get over it Walkie. You're living in the past. Thankfully, that statement isn't anywhere near as true as it once was.
