I saw the show last night in Pittsburgh and it is absolutely fantastic.  I've seen Waters many times starting with the Radio KAOS tour, and this was my favorite time seeing him by far.  The production is amazing.  If you are on the fence about going, I strongly recommend it.

Dear Lord.  Pink Floyd and everything associated with them are unspeakably awful.  If "The Wall" "changed your life", then you must be an over-sensitive emo prick.  You make Conor Oberst look like a Navy SEAL.  You pee sitting down.  You think you understand what life's...all...about...MAN.  The GREAT GIG IN THE SKY!!!!  "Should I trust the government?"  HELL, NO!  They're trying to monitor my electricity usage for my grow lights!   PIGS!

Pink Floyd is like cheese in a mousetrap for other artists.  If they genuflect at the open notes of "Brain Damage" then you can tag 'em, bag 'em and throw them in the scrap heap.  Trent Reznor and Wayne Coyne?  I'm looking at you.

I think Walalce 2.0 has had a decently high batting average.

though brian rails against the very thing he himself is doing in his post--i'll leave that one alone--i must say most of what he speaks about is just boringly wrong . . . from my own opinionated side of things.  i myself have grown out from the past of it all and decided to stop saying this band is no good or that band is.  who cares.  i can't do what they do, so whom i am to judge.  things do change people's lives, brian, (it's not that big of a mystery) and yes they can waste too much time on the memories of the event.  all thinkers of mistrusting authority are not only potheads who seem to have all that time to protest because they can't hold down a job.  your mistrust is seen through apparent, and somehow i feel you've never even tried drugs.  and please . . . all bands are "cheese in the mousetraps" for other artists.  ever heard of the stones, the who, all blues musicians, the beatles, the doors, the dead, all motown artists, etc, etc....??

the end.

No.  I don't subscribe to the circle jerk/daisy chain theory of rock n roll heritage worship.  Because in the end, you're going to wind up getting f***ed:

Lady Gaga munched Maddy.  Maddy sucked the chrome off Bowie.  Bowie bent for the Beatles.  The Beatles hound dogged Elvis, etc.

You don't HAVE to respect anything in rock n roll.  Rock music is a Big Mac wrapper.  Hasn't history proved that those who know every groove of "The Velvet Underground & Nico" or "Rubber Soul" are actually far LESS enlightened and cool than those who haven't?  Remember all those 16 year olds who went apeshit for Matt & Kim Saturday?  Yeah?  They haven't heard of Bob Dylan, either.  The days of Fab Four acolytes are over.  No more Oasis or ELO.  Just glorious, bastard drones.  With no connection to Robert Johnson, Hank Williams and/or Kei$ha.  You don't need to read the Bard's first folio to enjoy the "Twilight" books.  And you don't have to listen to "Loveless" to turn up Travie McCoy.

And if Pink Floyd songs were "the songs that saved your life" and "the only ones that ever stood by you" * then I guess more power to them.  So all these kids can stop the Ritalin and just listen to "The Final Cut?"

It's just that Pink Floyd songs:

A.)  Use such simplistic, obvious methaphors that their fans take as deep thoughts.  "Us & Them?"  Authority sucks?  Sometimes we build...wait for it....WALLS around ourselves to isolate our emotions?  I'm actually glad Pink Floyd broke up before they got to some of the trickier ones like "War is bad" or "Love can hurt" or "Where do all those stray socks go after you're done with laundry?"

B.) Fine.  They used heavy-handed metaphors that millions accepted as gospel.  But they were all about things that were only relatable to.....the members of Pink Floyd!  I mean they REALLY wrote songs about the common man.  Being a rock star can be isolating?  It really sucks when the Brian Jones of your band becomes a acid casualty?  Doing grade A blow can leave you "Comfortably Numb?"  Gosh!  They were like the British Springsteen!  So AUTHENTIC!

Brian

* Which raises the point, if Tom Waits can be nominated for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame why aren't the Smiths?  What did Tom Waits achieve that The Smiths didn't?  Neither had great record sales.  The Smiths certainly sold more, though.  Weren't the Smiths more influential?  The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is such a Baby Boomer/Jann Werner joke it's more an honor if you never get in.  It's officially sponsored by Lipitor, Viagra and Fidelity Investments.  But all the white liberal guilt is showing.  Putting Jerry Garcia or John Lennon on the cover every three issues didn't get Kurt Loder any more pussy.  So the bitterness is directed at those who got out.  For an institution so dependent on The Village Voice, the great revelation is that 50 Cent may not have a problem getting in.  It's "college rock" like The Pixies that may.
