sure, they have at least 10 absolute classic tracks, but their albums are incredibly dense works ... maybe i'm just crazy, i just don't see why casual music fans flock to them ... i mean, discs like "animals" and "meddle" (and even "the wall") are just insane, how does someone who usually just listens to tom petty and ac/dc process that?  even "dark side" is pretty out there for such a seminal (and popular) album ... maybe it's just every casual casual classic rock fan's prog indulgence or something, i dunno

Waters was actually pretty damn great on that last tour in 99/00.  "Dogs" in its entirety; "Shine On", "Welcome to the Machine","Set the Controls" ... Face it, we're never going to see Floyd again, so make do with what's coming around.  Waters on a Saturday night in September, even if it's at Nissan, will be a concert worth seeing.

Waters was good live, but it seemed like he needed about eight guitarists to cover Gilmour's parts.

As sell-out as it would be, I can't think of anything better than a full on reunion. The '94 Division Bell show at RFK was one of my all-time best.

I'm not a casual fan of Pink Floyd, quite the opposite. However, Floyd is the only prog-rock I listen to.

Seen Pink Floyd 4 times and Roger Waters 2 times. Out of all of them, the best show was Roger Waters performing The Wall in Berlin in 90.

It's great. Polarized (Roger vs. Dave) Pink Floyd fans will absolutely hate it. But it stands on it's own as a solid album from start to finish.

come on now, they distill pop music to its basics ... pitch perfect harmonies and hooky melodies that stick in your head for weeks ... sure they have plenty of crap, but their great stuff is incredible ... not too hard to see why casual music fans would eat them up

fair enough.

and Pink Floyd took the music that Beach Boys fans and the like thought was "too hard to understand" "boring"  "slow" "sad" whatever, and made it something that all human ears can listen to.

its the same for the Beastie Boys....they made white people all over the world say "hey!!! we can listen to rap music too!"

(yes, i just compared the Beastie Boys to Pink Floyd)

so your point is that pink floyd is the only (or one of the only) prog band to make their music accessible to the masses?

i'm beating a dead horse now, but i feel like you're missing my point ... which is only that i find it a bit odd that nearly every casual classic rock fan LOVES pink floyd, even though their sound is so different from traditional rock

don't get me wrong, i think it's cool that so many people listen to floyd, i've just always wondered how/why so many millions of people get into floyd when the rest of the stuff they listen to is traditional, riff-heavy, 4 min, verse/chorus/verse stuff

1.  my point is that Pink Floyd has made this sort of music MOST accessible and probably earlier than most others.

you know nearly every classic rock fan?

i am not sure you really have a point....which was my whole point with the beach boys comment in the first place.

I don't think this is a fair statement.  When Pink Floyd got really big, the market was much more open to more exploratory music.  Look at the success of bands like Rush, Yes or Styx.  Rush is one of the best selling bands in the history of music.  What about the other more psychedelic, proggy stuff from the 70s?  Zappa, Bowie - there is some really dense stuff on a lot of Bowie's albums. To distill the 70s or classic rock down to AC/DC isn't really a fair evaluation of the situation.

I think the market was just different at the time when Floyd came out, and the fact that they had singles that were more accessible than the aforementioned bands - see "Money," "Wish You Were Here," "Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2," and so forth - they caught on more readily.
