I can't tell if a few folks are being ironic or just slightly ignorant? Apologies if it's the former and not the latter.

But, y'all do realize there isn't a collective 'They' with black folks just like there isn't for white folks? 'They' don't get together and decide to change things up with the nomenclature.

In reality, all sorts of people (usually with agendas) change the meaning of words/labels. This in turn leads to a change in the way some people want to be identified.

For example, some conservatives have endlessly flagellated the word 'liberal' from it's actual meaning - 'a political ideology that advocates free markets, limited government, constitutionalism, rule of law, due process, and individual liberties' to 'DERP, COMMUNIST, main-stream-media-employed, derp, unpatriotic, Socialist, government entitled leech, enviro-nitwit!'

How do you upset the set up? Evolve and modify your identity ... Progressive!

that's a lot of nice verbiage but bottom line slappy: do african americans now prefer to be called blacks? yes or no.

No.
'They' actually now prefer Coons. Give it try, you'll love the response.

If you're going to throw down snarky comments like 'nice verbiage' it would help if you actually read the comment.
I answered it in the first three sentences.
Just like all other races, the majority of Black people don't care.

Seriously how many of you have actually come across more than one person who objected to being called 'black'? (That actually was black.)

What's more ignorant is the assumption that the collective race is lumped together in one thought and desire.

My kids go to a very racially diverse school.  They don't give a fuck about any of this stuff.  It's awesome to hear them talk about their classmates.  I'll be like "which kid are you talking about?"  And then we go on and on as they try to tell me which kid in their class they are talking about, who I know I've seen but whose name I can't remember.  "Is his skin darker or lighter than so an so, is her hair straight hair, or really curly hair" .  On and on.

Little kids could care less about any of it.  It sucks that grownups are such a bunch of assholes.

This is just what came to my mind reading this.

I don't think so Slappy.. As a race African Americans all agreed they did not want to be called "niggers." That is a fact.

There is nothing wrong with talking about race and I resent any such implication or the implication I'm an asshole for caring about how African Americans would like to be referred to. Give me a fucking break dude.

For example, I'm a "hispanic" but can't stand the term and can't wait until people use Latino. Sorry if that is a problem for you but I am entitled to my opinion. And yes, little kiddies who don't know much about history can afford to call themselves whatever they want... when you've walked around the block and studied about slavery and discriminatio and racism you might not feel that way.

Ok, let's slow down. You are absolutely correct there is nothing wrong with talking about race.
I didn't intend to imply you're an asshole. It is difficult these days to decipher snark or being sarcastic from the serious.

It is NOT a fact that African Americans all agreed they did not want to be called 'niggers'. Just like all white folks didn't agree to not be called a 'cracker', 'honky', 'whitey', or 'Nazi'. There are segments of all populations that admire different labels.

I would say the best way to find out what a person wants to be called is ask them. I've found making friends with all different sorts of people that you learn these things best by engaging and learn.

After becoming friends with a few Brazilians, I know better than to assume everyone from South America is 'Hispanic'. Even in Mexico I would avoid 'Hispanic' after hanging out with folks of Mayan descent.

Mr. Natural, did you ever consider that maybe you ought to get your anger issues under control rather than constantly expecting everyone else to adjust to your peculiarities? If they use the word Spic, hey, I'll get angry WITH you. Hispanic, Latino, whatever, just deal with it. Yeah, okay, you can get specific with exactitudes but, seriously, is that really worth the stress?

According to the origins of the word Hispanic, and what I know about some far roots of my ancestry, I'm, in part, Hispanic. According to the definition of Latino with it's Latin roots, my deep French roots would consider me a Latina. Hey, cool! But somehow, I suspect that if I went around calling myself Hispanic and Latino, Hutch would blow a gasket. As it is, I wouldn't bother only because it would be too confusing. I'll stick with Euro Mutt but not because it makes life more stress-free for ol' Mr. Natural. Chill out, man. We're all part of the Human Race... except maybe for Kosmo who is from a whole other Funky Mod world of Vinyl.  ;)

Hey Hutch, as a Latino does it make you angry that some people try to argue that Mike Trout deserves the MVP more than Miguel Cabrera, in spite of Miggy leading his team to the playoffs (that which Mike Trout didn't do in spite of having Albert Pujols for a teammate) and being on the cusp of the first triple crown in 45 freaking years?

When did they add new parking restrictions in the Black Cat/9:30 residential areas?  There's lots of signage now with restrictions for zone 1-2 permits-only and 7am-midnight time restrictions.  Not every block, but still all over the place.  Pay attention to the signs when you park.

Fine, i'll stay out of the city and keep my money in the suburbs. See how they like that.

I'm sure the residents of this neighborhood, whom the Residential Parking Program benefits, would like that just fine.

Although when you put it that way....

I wonder if it also has something to do with Miguel Cabrera being arrested a few times...
