I think Jaguar first posted about Beautiful Noise here 6-7 years ago. Great to finally see it is almost done.

Possibly controversial...it's not about the artwork that is being paid for...they paid for the recording and mastering what they are looking to pay for now is distribution. They aren't with a label and this puts their new album in listeners hands and no one owns their music but them.

Nothing wrong with the Toad campaign lots of bands use Kickstarter as a way to pre-orders of their albums with the special bundles.  I am impressed by the fact that they are making the album available digitally when it got funded, most of the time there is a lag in even getting the album digitally after the campaign ends.

They just stretched their goal to $150k. They're still doing well with pledges but, wow, that's high. Yet, they added a course of responsibility to promote, garner radio, make videos, etc. They'll have a small PR and managing staff, I'm sure, but at the minor levels. So, at this point, it's core crowd funding.
I think I get nervous when I see those high amounts (cough-Zach Braff-cough), but in Toad's regard, I know they don't have management or a label, and they can do things how they want - no label breathing down their necks, then locking up their music in ownership, or a shed. Plus, they are honest guys with a humble DIY attitude.
Thanks for the good points, Koz. As a thank you and to add to their goal stretch, they just added for everyone who pledges (no matter the amount) an acoustic version album (in digital format).
The new songs sound okay - a little glossy, and I miss their lighter side of grunge sound, but it's a new day and in the end, I'm just happy for them. I'm thinking beyond the current album - Kickstarter has the potential to provide them with the foundation for a longer return to music as a cohesive band (with all original members!)  to make future albums, tour more often, etc.

what an interesting world the music industry is.  first the industry rips off the consumer, then the consumer rips off and ruins the industry . . . and now the consumer is paying the bill so the industry can stay around.

Pretty cool, Toad met their goal w/in 24 hours; album has been sent digitally. They created a stretch goal adding that all backers get an acoustic version of the album which they will record in studio soon. (goal met) They made another stretch goal and all backers get a live recording from the new album tour this year. Kinda cool.

Well that is because most times the bands are using the kickstarter to fund the recording.

'hi . . . i am worth over 40 million dollars and own my own production company, so if i want to make a movie, it can be made quite easily, but then I would have to pay for it and actually do the work of paying for it, and why would i want to do that?  so ill get a bunch of idiots who think this whole kickstarter thing is cool and makes them feel "closer to the artist" and they'll pay for it.  and if they don't pay for it, and I can't get it made . . . ill call hollywood and amercia, racist.'

you know for free . . . well you have to pay for the ice and salt, you can fill a bowl with very ice filled water and salt.  put the can in salt ice water, make sure it is completely covered.  it will be cold in minutes.  science, its fucking free, kickstarter.

Have to admit, I only rarely encounter this problem.  See, Montomery County Liquor stores have a policy of selling unrefrigerated beer to discourage drinking in the parking lot.  So yeah, SCIENCE!

kick starter is strange to me. i don't think its bad idea but people who already have other means to raise money and already have great promotion amongst a crowd should not always use avenues like kickstarter in comparison to others who don't have as many resources.

plus, i think the fact kickstarter is picky about what projects they support is very weak. they'll support these almost already funded projects by some superstar but yet hesitate to help someone out who would work twice as hard to make something happen. and i get it, some of those folks can't be trusted but still.....it seems a bit snobbish when they do this approve/disapprove process of projects all the time. i like places like gofundme.com and etc. since its no rules except to own to what you offer people.
