Phew.. all-time is rough, but here's 10 I've listened to in the past week or so, that i quite like.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Liturgy
Agnostic Front
the Lunachicks
the Bouncing Souls
Parts and Labor
Exitmusic
Love as Laughter
Biggie Smalls
the Jim Carroll Band

wow, that list is all over the place.  I also listened to two Kid'n'Play songs.

I was bored and curious enough to wiki that shit. I guess you're both right?

"Guitarist Dean Wareham, drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang had met at the Dalton School in New York City in 1981, but began playing together during their time as students at Harvard University. Wareham and Krukowski had formed a series of punk-influenced student bands, before Wareham returned to New York.[4] When he returned in 1987 he and Krukowski formed a new band, with Yang joining the group on bass guitar, the new group deciding on the name Galaxie 500, after a friend's car (a Ford car of the 1960s, the Ford Galaxie 500).[1][4] In their early years, Krukowski didn't own a drum kit, so he borrowed one from his Harvard classmate Conan O'Brien, who'd bought a kit but had recently given up playing it. This drum kit can be heard on many of Galaxie 500's early recordings."

Played a little Type O Negative and Unsane on my drive home from NYC yesterday.

Rained like hell for three hours so I needed something loud.

At one point does an artist get to claim they are a "New York artist"? Is Ryan Adams a New York artist ?(I'm assuming he still lives there)

I will never think of Duke Ellington as a New York artist even if he moved there young and made it there...

Frank Sinatra is a New York artist...even if he moved to LA

Galaxie 500 are Boston through and through even if they cut their albums in New York with Kramer..

Neil Diamond is NYC, even though:
"LA's fine, sunshine most of the time
The feeling is laid back
Palm trees grow and the rents are low
But you know I keep thinking about
Making my way back

Well, I'm New York City born and raised
But nowadays, I'm lost between two shores
LA's fine, but it ain't home
New York's home but it ain't mine no more"

Oh Neil Diamond and Frank Sinatra?  Didn't think of them... I should remake my list.  As you can't have a list in which those two are eligible and not put them on there.

As for Television I think they are the most over-rated band of all time.  Case of all the press being in NYC so they overrate the bands fro NYC.

I guess if they make it big in NYC they are a new york artist?  Patti Smith isn't from NYC.  But that is where she made it.

well by that rationale Duke Ellington is a NYC artist... that is hard to swallow...

Marvin Gaye is a Detroit artist?

Patti Smith, though, is definitely a NYC artist... she spent many years in NYC before even getting into making music..

of course Sinatra, like Yo La Tengo, was from Hoboken and I believe got his start singing in New Jersey dives in his teens... but I think he's the consummate New York City artist..
