Kind of funny that the NL team with the best record has a run differential of +182 and the AL team with the best record has a run differential of +4.

Tim Tebow attempting to get into MLB

?He was a six-tool player. He had arm strength, he could run, he could hit, he could hit for power, he could field, but his character made him that six-tool guy.?

Oh for fuck's sake.

The Tigers not only dumping that but getting a guy whose been All Star/near-All Star level the entire time back in return is still borderline incredible to me.

Absolutely, and depending on how this works out (actually retirement vs physically unable to perform and insurance covers his salary), the Tigers stand to possibly keep some of the money they owe Texas.

NEVERMIND: He's being declared medically unable to play, so Texas will still be out of pocket about 50% (insurance picking up the other 50%) and I bet DET has to pay it all, but I could be wrong.

From Bless You Boys:

"According to Maury Brown of USA Today, the Tigers will no longer owe the Rangers the deferred money agreed to at the time of the trade. This will save the Tigers nearly all of the $30 million, as it was set to be paid from the years 2016 to 2020. The Tigers will also be able to lower their stretched payroll from a luxury tax perspective."

EDIT: That might be getting walked back now that more details are coming out about the nature of the retirement.

I bet that's wrong.

Because he's medically unable, it should work out like this:

Owed $24 million per year:

$6 million from Tigers
$9 million from Rangers
$9 million from Insurance (50%)

Interesting twist here.

He'll be on the 40-man roster every year until 2021 unless he reaches a retirement settlement with the Rangers.  That's actually kind of a big deal and an incentive to do a settlement.  I wonder what leverage the Tigers now have to get some relief from the money owed in exchange for the roster spot, otherwise I wouldn't agree to any settlement.

I'm sure the money owed will simply be spread out over a course of years a la Bobby Bonilla, but I'm still super intrigued by this.

Speaking of egos:

Joe Girardi: "My job description does not entail farewell tours."

Wow.
