(Or was) a mime

“Today in 1969, T. Rex kicked off their tour of the U.K. at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. Their opening act on this night was David Bowie performing a one-man mime act. According to Mental Floss, Marc Bolan "invited Bowie to open for T. Rex on the band's 1969 tour. At Bolan's insistence, Bowie performed his one-man mime routine depicting China's invasion of Tibet. Bowie was an experienced mime, having trained under choreographer (and Marcel Marceau protege) Lindsay Kemp." Concert goers were apparently not fans of the act, and Bowie was often met with boos and heckles. But Bowie would be fine, as Space Oddity was released that summer and the rest was history” @davidbowie @t.rexbolanofficial

I thought this was pretty well known? Marc invited him on tour ONLY if he would mime instead of preform music. It hurt Bowies ego. A few years later, TRex was opening for him.

Well I knew about some of his arty/drag show/mime stuff

but didn't realize he opened for Marc as a mime

Can you believe that Marc had  21 top 40 singles in the UK! T. Rex became one of the first post-Beatles acts to enjoy that level of success,
feel like he is a footnote in musical history, but was quite the force at the time

Shame he didn't make it past 30 (died not of drugs, but in a car crash his baby-momma was driving)

First off I had to kill Starsky. He was out of control…and it was either kill or be killed…in fact he thought he had killed me…

TRex manía was huge…. I mean even Bowie rode it as Ziggy was his answer to the glam explosion centered around Bolan

But it was just that…a mania with kids and they outgrew it and moved on

I don’t think Bolan should have been consigned to has been status by 74 but he was… I am not sure why his standing or legacy frittered away in death… why do some artists become way huger in death and others kind of dissapear …maybe cause his businesses were all in offshore companies with no control by anyone in his family or anyone I think related to music…heck his family didn’t get a dime after he died…his son was still suing decades later… Marc set it up so airtight to avoid taxes that it came back to haunt his family….a great trivia fact is his wife Gloria Jones sang the original Tainted love…

TIL that David Bowie first offered Mott the Hoople his song “Suffragette City.” and they said no!!

then after the success of Ziggy, he then wrote and offered Young Dudes.
and the rest is history

IMAX

a new family endorsed doc looks fairly good from the trailer
https://consequence.net/2022/05/r-david-bowie-moonage-daydream-trailer/

Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is one step closer to becoming small-screen reality. After getting its premiere at Cannes last year, the David Bowie documentary is slated to debut on HBO Saturday, April 29th, at 8:00 p.m. ET, and will then be available to stream on HBO Max.

Very interesting essay about David Bowie by author Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Laundrette. Buddha of Suburbia) who I just learned lost of the use of his arms and legs due to fall.  He has a memoir in the works.
