always loved Robert christgau's reviews of the 80's punk stuff
but he thinks she's got it too

Who's Got the 10-1/2? [SST, 1986]
My War, Slip It In, the Live '84 tape, the instrumental sides, Henry's poetry readings--it was all too much, the excess production of bohemian businessmen ready to shove any old shit up the wazoos of their presold believers. So I hardly heard the 1985 studio LPs Loose Nut and In My Head, which prove their sharpest since Damaged, with Loose Nut especially showing off Greg Ginn's fangs as lyricist and riffmaster. The demented acceleration and guitar squiggles of this live date improve most of the hottest songs from the '85 albums. And while introducing the band members by cock size may protest their belated obsession with sex too much, I can't complain when the answer to the title question is Kira, who plays bass so stalwartly she deserves all the credit she can get. A-

I saw Straight out of Compton over the weekend. While the film was entertaining ("mildly enertaining" to quote my wife), I agree with it not really being Oscar level. With one notable exception...Paul Giamatti...his performance perhaps should have been nominated.

He's uniformly great in anything he's in. Criminally underrated actor.

But does he really play anything other than the douchey white guy? Every time I see him, he's another douchey white guy. Mind you, he plays the role better than most of us do.

If they ever make a movie about Pete Rose, I'd like to see Paul G. play the lead role.

I would hardly say he's underrated
he'd do better if he'd work on his BMI

Only saw the first episode of Billions and he's awesome in that

He's been nominated for one academy award (Cinderella Man) and two Golden Globes (outside of minor "best guest star in a made for TV movie" type things). No Emmys noms in major categories. That he didn't win an Academy Award (OR EVEN GET NOMINATED) for Sideways was criminal.

I say underrated.

but the critics LOVE him, yes the academy and other awards shows haven't showered him with awards

I don't know what his bill rate is, but I'm sure he doesn't come cheaper than Gary Busey

It seems like the men have to be good looking to get the good roles. The women, not so much.

Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “Vice”
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”
Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”

Lead Actress:
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”
Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?"

One of the weakest slate of Best Picture nominees in a while. Woof. If anything other than Roma or The Favourite wins, expect it to be on those "worst films to win Best Picture" lists until the end of time.

I agree.

My pick is The Favourite……….Roma is good, but it's not a movie that I'd see again.

I'm also pro The Favourite. Love Yorgos Lanthimos and it would be amazing for him to get his due. I probably regard Roma a little higher than you.

That said, its going to probably turn up being Green Book (a film that is perfectly fine but I never need to rewatch for any reason) with Cuaron getting Direction.

I guess I have to go see Vice now? *shudders*
