The Afghanistan Thread Thread
« on: August 17, 2021, 01:11:33 pm »
since it's in the news, and we're arguing about it in random threads, here's once place to discuss both past and current collapses of the country... and what the future may hold.

these pix are crazy (apology if this has already been posted).  might be the most people to ever fly on a single plane.

Can't believe they're not wearing masks on that flight.

can we blame Canada?
https://www.macleans.ca/opinion/canada-utterly-failed-in-afghanistan-why-cant-we-say-this-out-loud/

Over 40,000 Canadian soldiers served in Afghanistan, making it our largest military deployment since the Korean War. We spent $2.2 billion in assistance spending trying to rebuild the country–Canada’s largest aid program in history. And our diplomatic strategy around the world, for the better part of a decade, pivoted on the war, and what it meant to our alliances and bilateral relations.

Afghanistan was not a sideshow—it was the main event for Canada, for over a decade. And yet, we don’t talk about it. Ever.

the author makes $2.2 bil sound like a lot of money...

in all seriousness... what a god damn colossal failure by the US once again. Couldn't be more sad for those people.

Where are these people going to be dropped and then fucked over again?

It was more a generalization of Afghani people vs the specific ones on the plane, but I have a hunch the people on that flight won't be so lucky either.

After 20 years of war, it took 3 days of leaving the country to start it's own thread.

I mean it’s all relative… people on that plane won’t get their heads chopped off but what awaits them in America? Contrary to popular opinion it’s not exactly easy for anybody here…

I am so hoping the taliban will moderate their actions - some signs they might- but that might be wishful thinking

I'll believe in a kinder, gentler Taliban when I see some evidence of it. It's not like they're riding around in bumper cars or anyt-- oh, wait.

That’s a great point…. It’s not as if the taliban didn’t control large swathes of Afghanistan already!

American liberals live and love to beat themselves up over the inequities around the world

Hey that’s a step forward if they can enjoy an American styled theme park!!!
