depends on the country. being ambassador to france or barbados is indeed a cushy appointment doled out to political allies (read: donors). other assignments, like iraq or ukraine, are real jobs that require competent leaders. my very under-informed reading of mexico is that traditionally it was relatively easy assignment, but under trump the gig will take on more importance because of his threats of trade-disrupting tariffs and even chatter of sending US military to deal with the cartels. if trump needs to give lake an assignment, i'd much prefer she be sent to an meaningless country such as monaco, andorra or lichtenstein...
