HFS Rundown
« on: May 23, 2004, 01:30:00 pm »
Since this festival has fallen below most on the board, I'll give a brief rundown.  Way overcrowded.  Hot as hades again.  Can't take water in.  Charge 3 bucks a pop, and keep the cap so either you pick a cap off the ground and stick two bottles in your pocket, or you must stand at the stand constantly buying water to avoid dehydration. Coachella is 1000 times the concert and worth the trip in a heartbeat.  However hfs has learned some.  Set time were posted BEFORE you arrive, and they stuck as close to it as I ever remember.  Modest Mouse was of course the band to see, but their set left me longing for more.  No Bukowski left me a little sour, but they still put on a great show.  Yeah Yeah Yeahs were pleasantly.... enjoyable.  Screaming with angst, with a microphone literally in your mouth while smiling 90% of the time is something to see.  Then I had to suffer through sorry excuses for rock for several hours only to be broken up by Jay-Z "crapping" up there spouting "F" words and professing the pimp life... you know, doesn't exactly speak to me.... but most goers seemed to be having a good time.  The Cure was great... at least I thought... very strong beginning, then it waned a little.  I left before the encore, but I thought the highlight was Fascination Street.  Didn't pay face value, saw the bands I cared to see, and shot the bull most of the day with my Bro... so it wasn't too bad. I'd have to see a strong lineup next year that didn't start until later in the day (YYY's went on at 3:30) to do it again next year.

I didn't go because (1) no one I know wanted to go, and (2) the bands I wanted to see I knew would be *hours* apart.

Good to hear how Coachella blows it away -- I gotta get my ass out there next year.  In my mind it was like two days of HFStival.  Yuck.

Thanks for the report...though I didn't go, I'm still curious.

WEnt only for the Cure...was tortured by JayZ and the rest. Offspring didnt suck at least.
At least i didnt get there until 6 so i did not have to suffer the hell heat and got to keep my pale and pastyness.

I thought the Cure set was great! Got to hear some of the new songs...not too shabby. Edge of the deep green sea was my favorite.

i am still wondering what the HFS people were talking about the Cure coming to 9:30 this summer.

 Anyone have the scoop??

Myuman, you went to the HFStival!? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

Well, I guess one of us had to do the dirty work in order to give us the lowdown. Thanks for your report.

Next time, take a few bottle caps along with you.    ;)   Just don't screw them on until you get away from the stand or they will catch on and start searching you for taking freaking bottle caps in.

I thought Cyrpess Hill and The Offspring were the best of the main stage. I saw the first five songs for The Cure and they were good. I decided to beat the crowd to the Metro and leave early. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's were the best on the street stage and Scott Henry was the one worth seeing in the buzz tent. For those who didnt go and are gonna slam the people that did, we didn't miss you one bit.

This was my first 1st HFstival. Despite the brutal heat, the mosh pits, crowdsurfers and tight space, I had a good time. I liked Cypress Hill, The Offspring, Taking Back Sunday, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, OAR, POD, Jay-Z and The Cure. I did take some good pictures along the way.

Jay-Z and The Cure were both great, Modest Mouse was pretty good, overall a worthwhile day.

the cure did a full set length soundcheck friday night to an empty stadium.  well, mostly empty.  that was one of my highlights of the festival.  didn't see much else of the show.

as for the cure this summer, i'd count on merriweather or nissan if they play this area, not the club.

I saw them at Merriweather a few years back, wouldn't be worth a second trip. It woulda been perfect if they would come to the 9:30 Club.

I skipped it too-- though I did get a great view of Velvet Revolver frolicking in a DC park on Sat afternoon.

As a substitute, I played "Trucker's Atlas" and "Cowboy Dan" on my mp3 player on repeat.  (IMHO, the best MM songs ever.)

Anyone have the MM setlist?  I'm just curious.

Were they trying to score drugs?

Really, couldn't tell you.  Here's the experience...
saw two long-haired dirty people in the park (assumed homeless women)laying about, chasing eachother, etc. but then saw their silver tour bus with trailer in tow pull up and saw them get in.  noticed they didn't have breasts.  Later walked by 9:30 and saw same vehicle parked there.
