Although it would be nice to rid ourselves of the Glazers and the debt they buried us with. United have shown time and time again that success is achieved via a youth system, not a checkbook...So no big spending required. (imo)

according to this website (scroll down to bottom), ManU has the second-highest payroll so it appears that they are in fact spending big.

PAYROLL....not transfer fees.

among teams that have tons of money, it's hard to argue that manu are not the gold standard

but they spent £18m on a keeper this summer

I dont' have the time right now but it would be interesting to see who spent what on transfer fees over the last 5 years.....taking into consideration income from outgoing transfers.

I agree, Payroll is highly different than Transfer fees.

Plus that's old info.  Here's the 2010 numbers:

This year I think you'll see Chelsea's come down a bit and City's will rise dramatically.  United's has gone up £21m, so all three are probably going to be around £150m.  To put that into perspective, the other big clubs in 2010: 2010: Barcelona £233 million, Inter £207 million, Real Madrid £166 million and Milan £152 million.

And when looking at the Ratio to Turnover, they're doing just fine.  By far the best in the league when compared to performance, and I'm sure it's probably better than teams on the continent, though the appreciation of the Euro (for now) against the Sterling may change all that.

That low ratio number would suggest hat Mankie's argument that United are being very careful with their buying, while other teams are paying big bucks for United's players is a sound one.

I meant compared to their revenue.

If you or I buy a Ferrari (yeah right) and Warren Buffet buys the same model Ferrari. We SPENT BIG, but Mr. Buffet just got rid of the loose change in his pocket.

The squad Sir Alex put out for tonight's Carling Cup match was, on average, 3.4 years older than the one that started Sunday's Premier League triumph over Chelsea.

Beating Leeds just never gets old. I kind of miss them in the Premiership to be honest. The rivalry with them is second only to the pikeys.

2004: Yes, you read right. Owen Hargreaves has scored - it was a belter from outside the area. By the way, this is the first time the midfielder has played more than 10 minutes of first-team football in three years.

OUCH! That stings a bit, I must admit...

I was gutted United only drew.....then I got over myself and realized I was being a spoiled brat and happy United got a point at Stoke. Not many teams will manage that this year.

A little concerned at the length of the line outside the Old Trafford medical room though.

I didn't get to see any games this weekend so don't know who played well and who got lucky etc. (my mate, a fellow United fan, did tell me United were a bit lucky apart from a couple of stonewall penalty calls that weren't given our way)

The Britannia has really grown into being an extremely difficult place to play.  Should have had a penalty on the Hernandez injury play, but yes, 8 top flight players might miss the Champions League game this week.  That's a bit worrisome.  All in all, Stoke deserved at least a point, but it would have been interesting to see if Cheech had played more than 4 minutes or if Rooney had played at all.

I'm coming around on De Gea and I think Phil Jones has been the best signing of the off season.  Strong defense, great going forward.  Once the twins and Vidic are healthy, it will very interesting to see him in the midfield.

Oh, and I miss Cleverly.

The penalty given to Villa yesterday was a joke.  QPR deserved 3 points...
