Best Movie Quotes of All Time
« on: June 27, 2005, 09:46:00 am »
The AFI has released their Top 100 film quotes, with "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" at the top. Two from Marlon "Cotton Balls" Brando ("I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse," and "I coulda been a contender") follow in the 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

Judy Garland appeared in the No. 4 position with "Hey, you fucking dog, where the fuck are we?" and Bogart's "Here's looking at you, kid" was No.5.

Speaking about the Rhett Butler line, Bob Gazzale, producer of Tuesday's special Top 100 show, said, "Frankly, it has become kind of the catch phrase of catch phrases. It's used in so many different ways. Who hasn't been in a relationship where you really give it your all, whether you're a man or a woman, and finally get to the point where you surrender and take back control of the situation with a simple line from the 1930s?"

I was shocked that so many of what I would consider "classic" quotes didn't make the cut. Hardly a day goes by that I don't mutter one or more of my favorites. For example, who could forget...

this is for the girl who loves me. The girl who cares about me, for who I am. Not what I look like. I just wanted you to know what you'd be missing. You think I don't understand art. You think I don't understand fashion. You think I'm not hip. You think I'm pathetic. A nerd. A lard-ass fatso. You think I'm shit. Well, you're wrong. 'Cause I'm champagne. And you're shit! And till the day you die...you...not me...will ALWAYS be shit.

Mommie Dearest could have easily had 10 lines in the top 100...particularly the following:

"Don't fuck with me fellas! This ain't my first time at the rodeo."

"I should have known you'd know where to find the boys AND the booze."

"I'm not mad at you Helga, I'm at the dirt."

 and

 "TINA! BRING ME THE AXE!!"

"I wasn't like every other kid, you know, who dreams about being an astronaut, I was always more interested in what bark was made out of on a tree. Richard Gere's a real hero of mine. Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that. I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot."

"Say you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly someone says plate, or shrimp, or plate of shrimp. Out of the blue. No explanation. No use looking for one either. It's all part of the cosmic unconsciousness."
