i think it shows that alternative music hasnt changed so much.  sure it may not be as popular as it was, but i think that has less to do with all the bands just sucking all of a sudden....

Eh, I dunno. Could someone like Matthew Sweet, who was all over the alt/modern airwaves in the mid 90s, ever get airplay today? Melody is out, noise and aggression are in.

But is that because there was a conscious decision to eschew female listeners in terms of demographics to cater to?

Come now. You really want to equate Matthew Sweet with John Mayer?

All right... could the Posies' Dream All Day get on the radio today?

yes... if that radio station wasn't narrowcasting only the top pop-punk & nu-metal and their clones alone to a specfic demographic.  the Posies would do well on an Indie 103 or even a Z104.

I was just reading about "narrowcasting" and "vertical broadcasting" today on the train.  :)

No they aren't.
They just moved up the dial a little and slightly changed their format.
Can you hear it in the DC/NOVA area or is it blown out by some other station? We get it loud and clear in Baltimore.

They are back and closer to what they were about 10 years ago. Okay for a few listens but nothing to make a steady diet of. I can only take so many rounds of The Killers and Franz Ferdinand but it sure beats whatever shit they were playing before.

The lists appear exactly the same but as Kosmo ventured into, back then they would throw a lot more other songs within the mix. Towards the end of their stay on 99.1, they added almost nothing unless they were promoting a festival and they had an act whom they never played otherwise. At least, from what I could tell by the few times that I tried to listen. Also, by everyone else's comments. Personally, I think this is yet another example of micro-management destroying yet another business. Allowing the DJs some flexibility and creative freedoms was one of the things that made that station better in the old days. But corporate control freaks, like Clear Crap and Inshitity don't want to have a thing to do with that with Clear Crap being the very worst offender. Thankfully, HFS isn't one of their's or it would have never resurfed. It may still suck but as least a few people have some happy ears.
