darkhorse candidate for next local band to make it "big" (i use the parentheses because i don't mean playing arenas, but i do think they have a shot at being beloved by hipsters): the childballads.
 
 this is the new band from stewart lupton, formerly of jonathan fire*eater. they've played around for a while, but haven't had any recordings or even a web site.  fluxblog posted a song last month and it sounds pretty good.  their web site says they should have an album out in a few months, and i have a feeling that a lot of people reviewing records and deciding what gets hyped were among the few that were big jf*e fans.

After seeing them precede Ted Leo at the Operation Cease Fire thing tonight, I'm going to confidently predict that the DC Gorilla Poets are going to be the next DC band to "make it big".
