One could only hope that an author as brilliant as Irvine Welsh could not waste my time pointing out the obvious.  I implore you to find one American who actually thinks that football (or soccer) in America is better than Britain.  the truth is Americans don't care - that would have made a better article - Why Americans Don't Care About Their Tootball, by Irvine Welsh.

errr Vansmack its obvious if you go to football matches in america. So as Irvine Welsh writes for a British daily, I would say 99% of  its readership have not done that.
 
 So I think you should try and be a little more empathetic .
 
 I liked the comments about americans always saying somethings better in America, but Welsh does it about scotland.

His point is NOT that he didn't like sitting with soccer moms in suburban America watching third-rate clubs, but how the sport in Britain is becoming increasingly sanitized.

That's completely beside the point.  I rarely go to an MLS match - I do go to US national team matches and when MLS teams play friendlies against Premiereship teams.  I do wake up every saturday and Sunday morning at the crack of dawn to watch the Premiereship however.  
 
 Everybody knows that US Professional soccer is crap, and that while our national team keeps improving, it has yet to catch on with the mainstream fans.  I would have much rather seen Irvine say here's why nobody in america besides soccer moms likes US Professional Soccer rather than it isn't good because it isn't British (you're point).  That article is too easy to write and is pointless and useless.

That's one of his points, but a minor one at that (about two sentences), but he spends 15 paragraphs pointing out the obvious with only one truly fitting sentence about why America doesn't care about football:  "But this is football, something too important to be interfered with by people who don't have it in their soul."  I just wish he wouldn't have harped on the obvious and spent more time delving into why this is the case after now almost 40 years of the sports saturation.

Vansmack, hsve you turned stupid? You have watched American soccer, you know what it is like. The vast majority of the target readership probably dont even know there is American soccer. Therefore he is supplying an insite to people who have none.

 I guess he's lamenting that we don't have drunken hooligans at our soccer games.  Although, we have plenty of them at baseball, football, and basketball games.  And of course, on campuses after college championships.  How come those wankers at Cambridge aren't overturning cars and torching the library after they beat Oxford in the croquet tournament?  I guess they have no soul....
