Nice first issue on vinyl of what I always thought was Sumner’s most mediocre outing…maybe I will listen to it more and change my mind

Here is quite the timeline for King Leg/Bryan Joyce who appeared on a discovery playlist.  Pilfered from allmusic

Born in Nebraska and while in high school he joined his first band, an Andrew W.K. tribute act.

Moved to Nashville, Tennessee there he founded a Smiths cover band.

With his musical career not making much progress, Joyce shifted gears and enrolled in college, hoping to attend medical school. However, Joyce was passed over for med school.

Moved to Los Angeles, where he put together a band and started playing out as King Leg.

Joyce and his group developed a buzz in L.A., and was  signed to Sire Records.

King Leg booked time at Capitol Records' Studio B, and with Dwight Yoakam and Chris Lord-Alge serving as producers.

they also toured with Dwight and on that LSD tour Lucinda, Steve and Dwight

////

Definitely sounds more like Roy Orbison then Morrissey and pulling equally from vintage rock & roll and old-school country.

The album came out in 2017 and looks like despite last performing live in 2020 looks like they might still be active.

This years model is my favorite Costello but this is fantastic. Obviously it had to be or he’d still be punching data cards. My Aim is True was Costello’s debut and recorded the previous year backed by members of Clover, an American band hanging in London that would turn into Huey Lewis and the News. They were uncredited I think cause they were signed to a different label. The other big piece of the puzzle was Nick Lowe producing and I have to believe playing bass on most of the album. The bass on Watching the Detectives is absolutely fantastic. Every song is a stunner. Elliott Smith particularly loved this album.

100% agree with this take, some great tunes on MAIT, but TYM is just a barnstormer with the Attractions making it just such a masterpiece

I know I heard that before, but that's a great bit of musical trivia

oh and found out a bit more on lowe's bass contribution
does Nick Lowe play bass on “Watching the Detectives?

The song was recorded after the sessions for My Aim Is True, so unlike most of that debut album  “Watching the Detectives” used a different lineup.
Costello himself later explained that he wanted a more reggae-infused, noirish sound and brought in musicians from the London reggae/dub scene.
The lineup for the track was:
Steve Goulding (The Rumour) – drums
Andrew Bodnar (The Rumour) – bass (not Nick Lowe, despite the confusion)
Steve Nieve (later of the Attractions) – organ overdubs

Nick Lowe did produce the single, and because he was both Costello’s producer at Stiff Records and a bass player himself, many people assume he played on it. But the actual credited bassist is Andrew Bodnar.

another fun related fact
Steve Goulding the drummer also played on The Cure’s “Let’s Go to Bed,”

and this band is the same from Graham Parker and the rumor
also included Brinsley Schwarz on guitar (but not on that EC song)
but released some of their own material in late 70s

also reunited for the This is 40 movie in 2011

Yes I regret not going to the GP and the Rumour reunion tour show at Birchmere

Missed my only chance to see Mr. Brinsley Schwartz.

The band Brinsley Schwartz is one of the great also rans in music history (it’s a long list!). I love their stuff. Nick Lowe, for example, wrote What’s so funny about peace love and understanding when in BS.

Andres 🦑 disc 2

July 22 was the 25th anniversary of its release. I have to say I have had many “favorite” albums but this has been my favorite for the past 7 years. 105 songs on five CDs.
