Was "Love Will Tear Us Apart" written with the knowledge of "Love Will Keep Us Together?"  Because when you put the titles back to back, the second looks like a smartass response to the first.

From Wiki:

"Love Will Keep Us Together" first appeared on Neil Sedaka's 1973 album The Tra-La Days Are Over which did not have a US release, Sedaka's version of the song making its US album debut on the 1974 compilation album Sedaka's Back.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a song by the British post-punk band Joy Division. It was written in August 1979, and debuted when the band supported Buzzcocks on their UK tour in September and October 1979.

Yes, according to the internet

This was written as a cynical response to "Love Will Keep Us Together" by The Captain & Tennille. Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis wrote it at a horrendous time in his life when his marriage was breaking up. Deborah Curtis, in her biography of Ian Curtis, Touching From a Distance, recalls her husband enthusing over the cover art for Love Will Tear Us Apart to her, although at the time he'd banned her from even coming to the band's gigs. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

Joy Division might be the most overrated band in the history of rock.  Only saved by the greatness that was New Order.  Although I do like "Love will Tear us Apart".
