Another music query
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:03:00 pm »
I went to Coinstar and got a $73 Amazon credit which I intend to spend on MP3s.  What should be my top 5 choices of good new stuff from within the last year?

Jay Reatard - Matador Singles '08
Lindstrom - Where you Go I Go Too
Brightblack Morning Light - Motion to Rejoin
Nick Cave - Dig! Lazarus, Dig!

LOL, I'd list my top 5, but I doubt any of them are mainstream enough to be on Amazon MP3. Most serious artists only release on cassette or 7".

I've come across quite a few cassette and 7" releases in the last year, too.

Julian, if I'm not mixing you up with someone else, you only like formulaic alt-country?

Unfortunately Coinstar credits can't go towards 7" and cassettes, so I'm stuck with MP3s.

How are the Secret Machines?  The New York Times (aka Liberal Elitist Media) gave their new disc a good review and they played here recently?

I'll admit I occasionally get you two long-named contrarians mixed up.

Anyway, thanks, my dogs, for these tips.  I have more than enough to use up my Coinstar earnings.

I also see that Amazon carries Malory, which Jaguar recommended long ago, so that will be in the download queue as well.

"Hey Ma" is about as powerful of an anti-war song as I've heard lately...

Good call on James...  digging it on first listen.

Azaghal, thanks for the Nick Cave rec.  Can you suggest a key track from each of your other recommendations?

It turns out I already have "Everbody's Daylight" from Brightblack Morning Light, from KCRW's podcast...   it comes up in my shuffles from time to time, until just now I thought it was the Dandy Warhols in one of their spacier moments.

Sure.

Jay Reatard: Screaming Hand, An Ugly Death, Always Wanting More, D.O.A., No Time, I'm Watching You

Brightblack: Oppressions Each, Another Reclaimation, Rainbow Aims, Past A Weatherbeaten Fencepost
(And Hologram Buffalo is a free download on the Matador site)

Lindstrom: the nearly 30-minute epic title track that'll take you on a danceable sonic journey out into space and back.

dandy warhols - earth to the dandy warhols
the new album definitely has grown on me.

white lies - only have a single or two available - death and unfinished business

highly recommended and worth a listen.
