Little Man Tate, The Chalets, The Hard Tomorrows, The Features, The Indestructible Beat of Soweto - Volume One, The Victorian English Gentlemens Club, Underground Resistance, The Broken West, Paul Weller "As Is Now". I Am Kloot, Department S, etc

The Nice Boys CD is good, it's the band formed by the surviving members of the Exploding Hearts

There's a good New York Dolls album "A Hard Night's Day" released by Norton Records which is the demos of what would become the first record...

 others worth your downloads are
A House if you want to hear one of my favorite (and by extension Irelands) bands of all time
BC Camplight if you like Belle and Sebastian
 new Bloc Party
Angels of Light/Akron Family if you like slightly weird but very very good freak folk
Crooked Fingers if you like Wilco pre-YHF and a singer who sounds like Neil Diamond
Danko Jones if you like uncomplicated balls to the wall rock n roll
Eels if you feel like killing yourself
Gogol Bordello if you want to pogo around the room with unrestrained joy for 40 minutes
Heartless Bastards if you want to hear one of the greatest female voices in contemporary music
I Am Kloot if you want to score coolness points with Jaguar
Kristin Hersh/Throwing Muses/50 Foot Wave if you want to hear one of the original riot grrrls still going strong
Portastatic if you want to hear idiosyncratic power pop
+/- if you want to hear one of the most underrated albums of 2006
Richard Hawley if you still don't feel like killing yourself after listening to the Eels
Sultans of Ping if you want to know how to make a 2 1/2 minute garage rock classic
The Birthday Party if you want to know who Nick Cave was before he was Nick Cave
The Dears if you want to hear another one of 2006's best albums
The Frames if you want to hear the band that routinely outpolls U2 for best Irish band
The Frank and Walters if you want to hear power pop from Cork City, the real capital of Ireland
The Spinto Band if you want to hear one of the best young bands in the US

Lately, I haven't been able to get Fennesz's Venice out of my mind, especially "Chateau Rouge." Electronica and subtle noise at its most engrossing.

No idea.  I kind of doubt it though.  I find it hard to believe this band would last that long.

Good thread. I need recommendations too! Lately, I have been really enjoying +/-.  :)
(I can't go to the site right now - defeats the purpose of my post, I know. Sorry! Check to see if Dandelions, Girls in Hawaii or Headphones are available...)

Brennser, that is a GREAT list.  Thanks for the short descriptions.

Kosmo, you know I nearly always take your recommendations blind!!

I downloaded the Pipettes in December and just listened to it.  I got back and forth on them -- sometimes there a too retro, then the next song has a good mix of 60s girl group and modern day kick ass chicks.

take most of my recommendations blind, but be sure to checkout Underground Resistance first as they are a very early Detroit Techno group who is pretty far away in sound to most of my fav rock bands.
