How exciting! I really do appreciate the attention and your willingness to acknowledge how important my opinion is. You're really such a sweetheart.
Suffice it to say (if you haven't caught up by now), making the point that they are more directly influential on me has literally nothing to do with anything. Lately I've listened to Interpol more than the Beatles, does that mean they are more prolific songwriters as well? Hardly.
By the way, I know an eight year old that does nothing but listen to BB Mak. If you want I can put you in touch with her so you can let her know that means they are better songwriters than the Beatles as well.

quote:
Originally posted by Rhett Miller:
and allmusic gives the debut 5 stars and meat is murder 3. i would say 3 for the debut and 4 for meat is murder.

I tend to agree with you......
I guess The Smiths gets more stars as in a lot of ways it set the bands songwriting style and a number of songs on the album the smiths never bettered. But Hatful of hollow really did showcase how those songs should have sounded in the firstplace. But then as an album Hatful is little odd, in my opinion a good collection of songs not held well together.
Something that I dont find to be true of any of their subsequent albums.

I'd give their debut a solid four stars, and "Meat Is Murder" three stars. I liked "Meat Is Murder" but felt as an album it was a bit uneven, especially with the inclusion of "How Soon Is Now", which didn't fit in with the other songs musically.
"Hatful Of Hollow" was their best, IMO.

I'd give Hatful of Hollow and Queen is Dead both 5 stars

In my opinion.....
the smiths 3
hatful 4
the rest i would give 5
and perhaps a classic album special gold sticker to The Queen is Dead
which really does belong in the company of innervisions, pet sounds and whats going on.

I will say that The Queen is Dead would be right alongside Disintegration in my "stranded on a desert island with only 10 albums" list.
That said, if I could only have one, it would be Disintegration.
That said, if I were stranded alone with only Disintegration, could I use it to purify water? Probably not.

This started as a discussion about who were better songwriters. When I said I listened to the Smiths more than the Beatles these days, I was just trying to make the point that one person listening to them more doesn't necessarily make them better songwriters. Even though I don't happen to listen to the Beatles on a daily basis, I can acknowledge they are far better song writers than most anything that does find it's way into my cd player more often. Maybe they don't influence me directly as much as some bands, but their career means much more to music as a whole.
And no, I haven't even come close to listening to Interpol as much as either of those two bands and I seriously doubt I ever will. Again, it was just a point about who is in my Cd player more often lately.

I have spent more time listening to the smiths than the Beatles. The smiths have had more direct influence on me then the beatles have.
Although in a wider view without the beatles or the New York dolls the smiths would never have existed. So the Beatles are more influential in that sense.

Agree?

That's just what happens when you get old.
