i don't fucking even understand why people even start in the first place, with all the knowledge today about it's negative affects on your health; and especially knowledge of how hard it is to quit.

i know that most people don't think that it is going to happen to them, but it isn't rocket science.

i view a lot of smokers as completely ignorant about their health, and what they are doing to their bodies...

On a number of occassions.

BTW, I got a pretty cool postcard from SIGIT with them on front. They sent it wishing me Merry Christmas. I thought that was really cool of them especially considering I think they are a bunch of Muslims. Great guys!

Youbebetty, everyone takes calculated risks, but in their calculation is the thought "it can't happen to ME."  This includes not just smoking, but also that other dangerous pursuit, sex, which of course can kill you or get someone knocked up, no matter how many precautions you take.    Driving is incredibly dangerous yet most of us do it.  So it's not ignorance -- most people know what the risks are -- it's irrationality.

Jaguar, that's cool about SIGIT.  I got several Christmas greetings from Indonesians who were Muslims.  One of them, who wasn't sure what religion I was (I'm not a religion, but they don't understand that, so I always answered with some vague answer) sent me a Rosh Hashanah card!

Here is a case where the teenager is wiser than the adult.

The odds of dying from being a regular smoker are probably astronomically higher than dying from a lifetime of protected, "safer" sex. And I'm bet most people, even smokers, would agree that the payoff from sex is much higher than the payoff from smoking.

While we're at it, why don't we just argue that weed is as dangerous as heroin, because they're both illegal drugs.

What if you went into a roomful of 1000 people, and half of them were FARTING? Would you not feel like complaining?

Would those pesky anti-Bush war protestors be among those people who like to complain more than others?
