IOTA last night?
« on: February 05, 2003, 10:46:00 am »
Anyone make it out to the Iota to see
Mercer de shins?
Iron and Wine?
I completely flaked out and remember this AM. How was it be?

Rosie Thomas was the highlight of the evening. What an awesome voice! And nice bit of standup as her alter ego Sheila.
James Mercer was good, but some of the songs really needed the layering that the rest of the Shins provide.
Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) has a pretty voice, but his music would be better to read a book to than stand up for in an overcrowded bar at 10 PM on a Tuesday night.
Sam Jayne was good for about three songs, but grew tiresome after that.
All in all, a good show. All of you should get on the Subpop website and buy Rosie Thomas' album!

Agreed, although I did really enjoy Mercer, probably as much as Rosie (not as much as Rosie enjoyed Mercer, but as much as I enjoyed Rosie). I hadn't heard her before last night, she was pretty great.
I'm too sleepy to make sense. Sorry.
Same take on Sam Jayne, I was bored after a few songs.

Unfortunately by the time Mercer came on my legs were letting me know it was time to go home. But I thought the other three were fantastic. I went for Sam Beam but ended up being fairly blown away by both Jayne and Thomas as well. I thought they were all excellent and you've gotta give it up to a guy that spray paints his initials on I Love NY shirts and sells them for $5. But overall I think Iron & Wine was the highlight of the evning for me.
Also, what about Rosie's music do you feel makes it more suitable for last night's setting than Sam Beam's? I honestly don't see much of a difference at all in those terms. I could read a book to both if I wanted to. And what did Mercer's solo material end up sounding like?

I preferrred Rosie to Beam because her singing was more enunciated and his voice was more mumbly, and the mumbliness kind of lulled me. And I guess I just prefer pretty female voices to pretty male voices.
Mercer's solo stuff just sounded more stripped down, creating more of an emphasis on the lyrics. Usually I say lyrics are more important than the music for me, but my favorite thing about the Shins is the music. Without the weird instrumental stuff going on, it wasn't as good for me. Good, but not as good.

Plus, Rosie's between song banter providing a nice contrast to the seriousness of the songs. Beam just didn't talk enough.

The shirt thing was pretty great. I'm thinking of making some of those for my friends for Valentine's day, just so they can show me how much they care.
Beam does have a great voice, very soothing. I would like to get his album, as well as Rosie's, for that matter, but I could see reading (or just lounging) to either. I need to be sitting for that.

It's definitely at the top of my playlist right now. Picked up Rosie's album at the show last night, but haven't had a chance to listen to it. I was a little disappointed that 'Paper Airplane' isn't on the tracklist, but I'll be happy as long as last night's closer is.

If there ever was a show that needed chairs, this was it, what with the length and the lulling music! Although with the big crowd, it may have let less folks in...anyway... excellent show all around...Rosie was the best! Sam Beam interesting...Mercer...interesting to hear sans Shins, but I prefer avec Shins...
I want to lay around on a lazy afternoon and really listen to both Beam's & Rosie's lyrics...I bought her CD

It was sold out, I was near the door and saw several people get turned away.

Were you one of those emo looking people in the front on the door side?
