Now now, mr. distance, no need to exaggerate.  Contrary to what you've heard, he actually doesn't heal the sick or perform miracles (shocker, I know!).  He just convinces stupid politicans to do the right things, even though they may be doing it for the wrong reasons (like discussed above, being enamored of a celebrity, especially one who is well-informed).

I thought that throwing wads of cash & computers at Malawi was not an optimal solution..?

 Point 2:  For your one Theroux I can throw (get it?) about a gazillion other articles back at ya from people (activists who live there, not just visit) that detail the good that is being done.  He's just a misanthrope who was in the Peace Corps and has written one good book and then was ignored, and is now pissed that a "rock star" is getting the attention for good works.  Welcome to the (unfortunate) real world.  Do-gooders who have no name recognition don't get attention.  Hence (fun word), the need for celebrities to get involved in the right way (not just photo ops) and get more attention. (again, unfortunately).  
 
 Point 3.  Arguing (debate) on the Internet is fun. I hope I don't defame you, I would hate to have to go jail.

I think you missed the point....I know the Irish wouldn't give him the ego-boost of acknowledging his presence, but the area he was in was a major tourist area...as in, FULL OF TOURISTS!
 
 And I personally have no desire to meet celebs, and probably have met more than most on this board (Jag probably being the exception)

I have read several of his nonfiction books & novels and I would say that he has written more than one good'un.

 BTW, I had my first close encounter.  I was in the Hot Topic @ Tyson's Corner browsing Gwar action figures, when lo-and-behold I noticed a scraggly man peeing against the back wall of the store.  When he turned around I realised it was Bongo.  Shocked, I called for mall security, but he had already slithered away by the time they showed up.

Can't say I'm that bothered either way personally...but it seems the general opinion of the Irish is that the  sentimentalists think it's great and the realists think it's totally fucked up.
 
 Why not Robson/Staunton for 2-3 years, nothing like learning your trade from a master.
