Close encounter of the Bono kind....
« on: January 09, 2006, 12:27:00 pm »
...so me and the wifey had to go up to Dublin last week. We went into Temple Bar for dinner and a couple of drinks. Low and behold, if we didn't see the man himself walking down the road, no entourage, just another bloke and himself!

I had read that he doesn't get bothered in his home town, but Temple Bar is the main tourist drinking area so you'd at least expect some reaction, but nothing.

Stupid glasses and bad mullet, no stetson.

Not a man crush at all, I just thought it weird that even though he's a total knob, he is a celeb and can walk around as if he was a total nobody like markie!

jesus mankie, how long have you lived in Ireland? Don't you know that we're a nation of begrudgers?

We wouldn't want gratify the fucker by making him think we thought he was a big deal....he's just Bobby Hewsons son from Ballymun

In general, they can move around Dublin relatively unmolested - I used to see them at gigs/in bars every so often

It's failry well known that Bono does not travel with bodyguards. Even 60 Minutes asked him about it.

If they get bothered in Dublin it's usually by

 a.  as brennser said, Irish begrudgers who taunt them for being "big shots"

 b.  hard core fans (a.k.a. psycho fans) who have traveled to Dublin to try to catch a glimpse of them.  You can also find these people stalking, errr, hanging out outside their homes, or at the Clarence Hotel which Bono and Edge own.

the begrudgers prefer to ignore rather than to taunt - if you taunt them you are implicitly acknowledging that they are big shots

years ago, I went to see Curve (remember them?) in McGonagles, Bono and Edge were at the show and post-gig was treated to the sight of a very drunk Bono very publicly urinating in a nearby storefront

My father, who must live in a cave, carried on a ten minute conversation with Bono at the White House a few St. Patrick's Days ago.  Sunglasses and all, he didn't recognize him until he saw the Reliable Source the next day.  Oh, middle-aged men.

Take a deep, slow breath...Ready?  Ready.

Celebrities are actually real, mortal human beings, with normal-people lives, too.  As hard as it may be to believe; they shit in the same public bathrooms as you and I.
