Why would you book a hotel for a festival that's 40 miles away?

rhett - based on last year's traffic, 40 miles might as well have been 4000.  also, let's not forget the drunk-driving factor.

i'm currently holding a hotel reservation for VFest weekend about a mile away from pimlico.  if i decide to go, i'll  be driving up friday night and staying until monday morning.  there are few things i enjoy less after a long day of partying at a festival than being stuck in traffic for 2+ hours.  this is also why i pretty much refused to go back to nissan pavilion.

People worry about being hit by a drunk driver so they book a hotel room? People don't do that if they're going to a Ravens game, do they?

Why not leave a few minutes early and beat the crowd? Though I don't go to concerts of this size, I do occasionally go to large sporting events, and simply just leave early and walk fast to the car, and never have traffic problems.

Man, y'all got a lot of disposable income, flying around the country for rock concerts, or booking hotels for local concerts!

I think the bigger concern is they don't want to BE a drunk driver. If you're throwing back beers all day for 10 hours, you're probably legally verschnikkered by the end of the day, "tolerance" or not.

actually, my concern about drunk driving is not wanting to do it.  i know i'm going to drink at the show, so i shouldn't be driving - and need to plan accordingly.  although there are other ways out of it (designated driver, take bus/shuttle, etc) i feel that a local hotel is the solution that fits me best (with fringe benefits like traffic-avoidance and option to party on should i have the energy and desire).

Why would someone need to throw back beer all day for ten hours? Is the music that bad?

Are you one of those topless 20 year old fratboys, or are you a thirtysomething pretending to be one?   ;)

I don't know why people do it, but I see them do it all the time. If someone was to drink even 2 beers late enough in the evening, they'd probably still be legally impaired when they went to drive home.

heh, i'm definitely not a fratboy, never belonged to a frat (don't have them where i went to college) and i can't stand DMB  :)

i won't be throwing 'em back non-stop for 10 hours, but i probably will have more than one should before driving.  i do a lot a stupid sh*t on a far too regular a basis but drunk driving is one i'm pretty adamant about keeping off my resume.  doing the "stop drinking in time to drive" routine just makes me nervous and hampers my ability to enjoy the evening.

We're doing a hotel option (we will also have an option of just bus-ing it up) mostly because the concert goes so late and then starts up so early the next day! With that normal 40 minute drive taking over an hour with traffic, wouldn't you like somewhere to rest your head in between, not to mention meet new people (slumber party anyone?!). It won't be that expensive- will be a steal since it would be less than what you would pay if you did it on your own (group discount!).
