Ummm, rather than clog up the Just Announced thread...
There's got to be others that are a bit upset over Phoenix playing the Rock & Roll Hotel? I had to rush here and whine because I figured there must be others like me here. I've been waiting for this show for years...R&R, seriously??
And THIS is a "full US tour?"
June 12 : Bonnaroo, Manchester, TN, USA
June 13 : Park West, Chicago, IL, USA
June 15 : Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, Canada
June 16 : Les Saints, Montreal, Canada
June 17 : Paradise Rock Club, Boston, MA, USA
June 19 : Terminal 5, NYC, USA
June 21 : Rock & Roll Hotel, Washington DC, USA
June 23 : Varsity, Minneapolis, MN, USA
June 25 : Bluebird, Denver, CO, USA
June 27 : Regency Center - Grand Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, USA

Not to be snarky, but let me get this straight - you're upset that you get to see a band that you've been waiting for years to see at a venue 1/3 as big as the club, and dramatically smaller than a lot of the others on the tour?
That's kind of a switch. Assuming you're able to get a ticket, I would think the smaller venue was a perk for their big fans.
-
I suspect that they'll be back later in the year, and at a bigger venue.
-
Vote with your money and don't buy a ticket.
-
Assuming you're able to get a ticket
pretty big assumption
-

Why? A lot of people won't go to Rock and Roll Hotel because of the location, and if you're on the ball buying tickets there, you should be fine. I can't imagine its going to sell out instantly. In 20 minutes? Yeah, probably, but I'd be shocked if they were all gone in five.
-
everything at the club sells out so fast, and the venue is 1/3 the size. the band hasnt toured the u.s. for awhile, i bet this will sell out fast

Normally that would be awesome. But first off, I hate R&R. Second, I hate R&R even more when it's really crowded. Third, this is a fun dancing show, it's the kind that I'd RATHER it be at a bigger place. I just want to enjoy myself and I worry the R&R is going to limit that. 9:30 or even the Black Cat would guarantee a more enjoyable show for me overall. And fourth, of course, I worry about getting a ticket, and now I don't have time to convince people to go with me, either...I'm paranoid about that kind of stuff at the best of times.
Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for a show at all...I'm just disappointed that it's not going to be quite the blow out I was expecting. And I'm just shocked that they would play R&R of all places.
I suspect that they'll be back later in the year, and at a bigger venue.
This is what I'm assuming/hoping. It's really a pathetic excuse for a tour...of course that makes me feel super lucky that they're actually coming HERE.

This formula worked pretty well for Vampire Weekend.

Totally agree with you Samantha. Not sure why it's at RnR unless it's a LiveNation show. Sure, Camera Obscura are at 9:30 on the 21st, but what kept them from playing 9:30 on the 20th? They don't have a show that day. The LA and NYC shows are also at LiveNation venues...and if Phoenix has a deal with LN, then that makes me even sadder.
It's not about the size of the venue, but the quality of it. RnR's stage is low and small, and sold out shows there suck. Getting tickets will be tough. Getting a decent spot to watch and hear the show will be tough, too. It's as stupid as booking Vampire Weekend at RnR...AFTER VW played SNL. stupid.

For one, R&R Hotel is not a Live Nation venue.
For two, playing the small room is likely deliberate. It builds buzz about the band and the show being a hot ticket. People talk about it more. Maybe they could sell out 9:30 Club this time around - but if they sell out R&R Hotel now and its a hot show and a hugely demanded ticket, they've got a much better shot of coming back in six months and doing one, if not two, sold out nights at the club.
-

Someone's not watching their SNL.....Phoenix were on SNL two weeks ago.
I agree with calllat on this one that it's a deliberate pattern.
-
I saw Asobi Seksu a couple weeks ago at R&R and it was louder than any concert I have ever been to. Is it always like that?
-
Asobi are pretty loud, and yeah so is that venue. I always wear hearing protection and its fine.
And i cant believe people would be upset about one of their favorite bands playing a smaller venue... No matter which one. At least for me, I would always rather see a band in the smallest possible setting. Of course that isnt always possible, but it is great when it is.
-

Um, VW played RnR BEFORE they played SNL. Booking them at RnR AFTER an SNL appearance (as is the case here) would have been stupid, just as this is stupid. That's what I was saying.
I doubt playing the small room here is deliberate. They were smaller when they played 9:30 before. The other venues they're playing are bigger. Why on earth would DC be the "lucky" town to get them at a small venue? If it were deliberate, why wouldn't they play the comparably-sized Troubadour in LA instead of the Wiltern? Maybe they're deliberately avoiding IMP...
I swore that the RnR had a deal with LN...is it only for some shows?
-
it's funny that they're going to T5 (capacity: 3000?) to RnR (capacity: 300?).
if you're on a decently fast connection and order tickets the second they go on sale, you shouldn't have a prob.
personally, i don't buy the "do a small show now to create buzz" theory. why are they playing venues like T5 and the wiltern?!? i chalk this up to venue availability/schedule constraints. i certainly hope they come back in 6 months (i can't go to any show b/c of my wedding that weekend - the missus gave me the most evil look when i whined about missing this... :o) but i'm not holding my breath for it.
the RnR is always too loud. how anyone can endure a show there without protection is beyond me.
has anyone mentioned that RnR is NOT a livenation venue? they may have booked/promoted shows there, but it's not owned nor operated by LN.
-
Even Sonar has something on the schedule that night... Taking Back Sunday <insert your own snide remark here>
oh well guess i better be quick on the finger tomorrow
and yes i and other long time fans have a right to be a tad grumpy about the smaller venue, given we are go to have to share them with all their new biggest fans in the world. comments like "i've never heard of Phoenix before SNL, and I been listening to them non-stop on youtube ever since, translate into this during the live show "chit chat chit chat chit chat, OOOOH THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER, chit chat chit chat chit, OOOOOH THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG EVER, :P
-
They're playing the Paradise in Boston, capacity 650.
-
ok, so who wants help buying tix tomorrow? apply within.
-
I think it's been years since RNRH did an LN show.
-
Never was a Live Nation venue, but I think Jeremy Enigk's show there two years ago was presented by Live Nation (during the early beginnings of RnR). That was it I believe.
I'm probably in the minority here but I love the RnR Hotel...just get there early for sold out shows ;)
I personally think it's not gonna sell out right away. Maybe not for a couple days...

-

corrected.
-
Joe, I think there were a few more LN shows there.
Now that I think about it a little more, it wouldn't totally shock me if LN had their hands in the RNRH's business somehow. They (RNRH) do often book bands that are way too big for a small venue who's been around for less than three years to be able to book. CYHSY played there fairly recently and I think OAR last december? It would just make sense for a bigger entity to be behind the scenes pulling strings. Admittedly, this theory isn't too well thought out and I have no real evidence to back it up but one can't help but wonder.
<queue Snailhook> ;)
-
So I saw this band on SNL and started asking around about them. I heard that they were a French Strokes cover band, and recently cut an album of their own material, which comes out in May. I haven't heard the album, but they were pretty good on SNL. What's the maximum number of tickets I can buy?
-
I can promise you RnR andLiveNation have nothing -- and as long as the RnR booker stays there -- will never have anything to do with each other. Blood has been spilled over that relationship. LN did do a couple shows there early on, but that was before things went down.

got 2
-
I got 2 - thanks for the heads up! I read this thread just in time...
-
people cannot complain that this was a hard ticket to score - 6 minutes in and i can still pull up tickets.
-
ticket alternative got sloooooow but i still got two tickets. this is going to be a great show.
-
got 2 as well, 8 minutes in and not sold out, so maybe Much Ado About Nothing, of course this dashes my dreams of being asked to go on tour with them as their DJ ;)
-

i take back what i said earlier. kinda surprised, but i would have missed out if not for this thread. thanks forum
-

why? because you'll only tour with bands that can sell out a venue in less than 8 minutes?
-
believe me. ;D
I personally think it's not gonna sell out right away. Maybe not for a couple days...
-
It was really easy to get tickets to this show.
The Eddie Vedder solo shows, on the other hand, drove me crazy for 30 minutes until I could get a pair of balcony seats!
-
By the way, the venue they are playing in Denver holds 400, and the one in Minneapolis a 250-500 range.
It appears that LA and NYC are outliers.
-
got this on myspace bulletin from RNR Hotel at 11 am:
Subject: PHOENIX on-sale now! ALMOST SOLD OUT!!!
-
That could mean nothing. As we've seen, the promoters from the hotel don't have a problem acting as division II street-teamers when it comes to pushing their own shows.
-

no because they are playing at RNRH and not the 9:30 club, seeing as I don't DJ at RNRH they wouldn't be able to bask in my awesomeness there, now were it at the club they could at least get the chance to.
one of my worries is that this show could have easily been targeted by those who resell tickets, thus making it harder for the fans to snare them when they first went on sale.
-
By the way - Terminal 5 is NOT a live nation venue. its owned by bowery presents who does their booking through ticketmaster.
but seriously complaining about a small venue. I saw them before at 9:30 club and it was awesome and they had other great bands with them - Longview and Dogs Die In Hot Cars. I would be totally excited if they were playing anywhere smaller than Terminal 5.
Also - this tour had maybe 2 weeks of dates for them to play the States. They are playing in france days after the LA show and have a bunch of dates right before they get to the States. It seems this is just a small tour and theyll be back again later to do a full US tour.
-

thats what i thought too. made sure i got 2 tickets even though my wife is up in the air about going figuring i wouldnt have an issue getting face back if needed

(quoted for lol)
-
less than 8 tickets remain!!!
Subject: only 7 tickets left for PHOENIX on Sunday June 21
-
My friend was able to pick up a single ticket just now. May have been the last one because she had just been rejected for trying to get a pair.
-
Yep. Sold out.
-
I personally think it's not gonna sell out right away. Maybe not for a couple hours...
final edit.
believe me. ;D
*ahem* you were saying?
-
Heard this show being highlighted on WTMD this morning on the way into work so I guess that turned up the flame a little bit. Oddly, I've never heard them played on the station though that doesn't amount to a hill of beans since I only bother with the station on short commutes. Even then, it involves a radio tug of war with WRNR since both stations are constantly turning me off. Couldn't help but wonder if they are yet another media outlet mining this forum for music news. :D

redsock is correct. they tried to collaborate and it didn't work out, for a few reasons, one of which is pretty hysterical. i shouldn't divulge, though. this is coming straight from the horse's mouth at live nation.
i know exactly why RNRH gets some major shows. it has everything to do with the black cat dropping the ball on numerous shows -- mostly to do dance nights all weekend -- and booking agents getting tired of it. and there are no other mid-size venues (250-500) for bands to play, other than the birchmere, which has its own niche.
this irks me to no end, but less so since i moved to philly. still, a large part of my heart is in dc and i would love to see a 400-500-cap venue that does everything right and blows RNRH out of the water. if someone opened up a killer independent venue around u/14th streets, they would start taking shows away from RNRH, just like it has taken shows away from the black cat.
btw, i was offered to book phoenix at johnny brenda's, which is 280-cap, and the passed because of rerouting. phoenix would have instantly sold jb's out. the booking agent told me that they are deliberately playing smaller venues this time around (at least, in markets that are not NY and LA).
-
one of which is pretty hysterical. i shouldn't divulge, though.
c'mon. ;)
-
I suspect that they'll be back later in the year, and at a bigger venue.
[deleted snarky remark] it makes you think what bands would not be bypassing DC if the promised House of Blues had been built without all the bruhaha.
-
Any chance someone snagged an extra for a furry friend named Bearman? Pretty please? Hot tub party after the show?
-
I was at Coachella and avoided the internet and the forum like the plague. Who's got an extra for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?
-
So how does Phoenix get the simulated doubletracked vocal effect when they play live? Is this something available on modern soundboards? It doesn't sound like an echo or reverb. For example with Lisztomania on SNL they were switching back and forth with using it from the verse to the chorus. Historically it'd be done in the studio by recording the vocal once then playing it back through headphones while singing it again, and combining the two tracks for more depth

most likely a harmonizer/harmonizing effect. probably the most known of these are the eventide H series (http://www.eventide.com/AudioDivision/Products/Harmonizers/H8000FW.aspx), but there are LOTS of effect boxes that can produce a harmonizing effect (example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRB98dibQ6c)).
fyi most effects are provided by outboard gear, not the soundboard (mixer) itself.
-
I just watched a little of that youtube demo and it's something different... unless a true doubletrack effect was presented after I lost my patience. With the Phoenix vocals, what's added isn't a pitch-shifted harmony note... it's a note of the same pitch, and to get the doubletracked sound I'm guessing the effect might be quickly and continuously varying the time shift between the generated copy and the original so that it doesn't just sound like a slapback echo with a tiny delay or a reverb. Just like when guys like John Lennon did it the old way, the doubled part doesn't line up exactly and that's what makes it give the vocal more depth
-

Lots of effect boxes and plugins can "humanize" a signal or sequence by slightly altering the various aspects of sound and rhythm. Simulating double-tracked vocals in a live setting should be doable by now.

i didn't mean that the video did exactly the phoenix effect, it was meant as an example of what is possible. i wasn't sure how familiar you were with vocal processing, your initial question led me to believe you weren't - my bad.

the effect you seem to be describing is called flanging - not exactly what's going on here. there definitely is a small delay but not enough to be perceived as slap-back. the delay is also constant. the doubled (delayed) signal is further processed, quite heavily actually, but i have no idea how.
Simulating double-tracked vocals in a live setting should be doable by now.
definitely is... just check out the phoenix video ;) also, it's entirely possible the band is playing to tape so we don't know if this is live.

My knowledge of audio gear and technique is current right up to about 1975

band just started their set....
-
Awesome! I saw your link, clicked, and they got on stage. Phoenix on demand!
-
They sound great and it's not all songs from the new album either
oh and i love this tweet
There are songs + moments on Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix that answr the question, 'Hey, what if Radiohead were fun?'
-
Funky Squaredance!
-
great stream, thanks for posting the link.
funny tweet indeed :)
-
Damn is this good.
-
translation: "now we're going to play only new songs... this one is called Armistice".

God I love "Too Young". What a great song.
-
show's over? i'm getting a "chargement" (loading) message, and someone in the chat window wrote "thanks for coming, have a good night". anyone still have music?
-
show is still going on... i was watching it through the ps3 just fine and then suddenly got the same problem... switched back to the mac and it's playing fine.
-
nevermind. refreshed the page, show is back on. dang, missed about 7 minutes...
this really is a great band. kills me that i'm missing them this time 'round. maybe the missus is willing to postpone the wedding so we can make this show... <ducks>
edit: oh great, got back in time to catch the last 3 mins. i hope there is an encore.

Ummm I speak zero French. I can't figure out how to work it. AARRRRGH.
-
sam: go to above link, and click "lecteur flash". you can try "lecteur silverlight" if you have microsoft silverlight installed, but flash will definitely work.
oh, wait, too late... show's over. you can still get in on the stream, but it's just shots of the crowd milling about the club.
-
it might be archive here at some point
http://www.live-concert.sfr.fr/vod/all

Dangit I tried that and it kept giving me a pop up message thingy. Which I had no idea what it said. I'll have to try the archive thing out. THEY ARE so fucking amazing live.
Well so, what does everyone think about the new album?

I've only streamed the new album a couple times, waiting to buy it from them at their show, but still think it's great. They have managed to bring together what worked really well on their previous albums
-
fun, but ultimately forgettable

it was trying to figure out if you had Microsoft's Silverlight loaded which is kinda of annoying as not many people outside of a handful of Mac users probably have it loaded.

"Lisztomania" has been the best earbug I've had in years. The CD is very tasty and a lot of fun, simply great pop. "Love Like A Sunset" drags but it's a lot different from the rest.
Well so, what does everyone think about the new album?
-
you are so lucky, seriously.
in new york they are playing terminal 5. its like 12 9:30 clubs combined. and it sucks gigantic rectal pathways.
the new album is growing on me. very different than their other stuff but none of their albums really sound the same, anyway. lisztomania is one of the best singles of the year.
-
they are also playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Another Phoenix live set being streamed today...
Watch Phoenix perform live on http://www.edge.ca today at 4:20pm!
-
Scheduled time change to 4:45pm for the phoenix broadcast
-
looks like this one got canceled... no longer listed on the edge's website.
-
I watched it. They performed "1901" and "Listzomania" acoustic, then had a 5-minute interview about Bonnaroo. Very short segment.
-
booked on Letterman 6/18, Kimmel 6/26
-
My tv guide said BOTH Letterman and Ferguson for 6/18. Is that possible, are both of those shows in NYC?
booked on Letterman 6/18, Kimmel 6/26
-
my usual reference for late show lineups says Metric on Ferguson 6/18: http://www.interbridge.com/lineups.html (http://www.interbridge.com/lineups.html)
-
So...anyone going tonight? Anyone that has an extra? :)
-
Kosmette and I are in, but sadly no extra...
-
I am going, and DO have an extra. Do you still need it Bearman?
-
I sure do!! I've got one friend coming, but will gladly take an extra. I'm going to get to the venue early, but can hang out as long as necessary Redsock. I'd be grateful. Thanks!! Will PM you my cell.
-
Leaving now for the show. Can't wait! :)
-
Fab show by the Phoenix lads tonight, was grinning ear to ear for the one to two punch of Napoleon Says with fuzzed out bass and Funky Squaredance and the scorching guitar solo.
To bad the venue and opening band were so lousy....
-
Awesome show! It was hot as hell in there, so my fiancee wanted to leave during "If I Ever Feel Better," but I still had a great time.
I loved hearing "Rally," "Sometimes in the Fall," and "Funky Squaredance."
-
Redsock, thanks SO much for the extra ticket! I managed to get my other friend in too...amazing. I felt really lucky to see this show. The energy at the end was insane, it truly reminded me of being at the old 9:30 Club to be that close. The PA isn't horrible, but I was WAY up front so I truly didn't notice if it sounded bad. I heard it was insanely hot towards the back and it got that way up front for a while too. That being said, we got some water handed out to us and someone must have opened up a back door because the heat managed to simmer down during the last 4th of the show or so.
Setlist:
Lisztomania
Long Distance Call
Consolation Prizes

Funky Square Dance
Rally

Rome

amazing show! it looked like the band was enjoying the crowd throughout the entire set. i hope they don't wait a few years before coming back to the area.
-
Supposedly they'll be back in September...listening to them now. Sigh. Luv them.
-
Given the reports on the venue and my hunch that they'll be back at the more comfortable 9:30 Club in September, I'm glad I unloaded my tickets. Looks like they play a fairly short setlist?
-
It was about 70 or 75 minutes. For a face value $18 ticket (plus service charges of course), I think it's quite respectable. They played a really solid setlist too...not too many songs you'd be left to want hearing. Although I'm sure it was miserable in back, for those of us lucky enough to be against the stage it was one of those nights you'll never, ever forget. After having had a few hours of sleep and waking up feeling like I slept 12 hours, it never ceases to amaze me how much energy I get from a fantastic concert. Well worth the time and suffering through those 15 minutes or so where it was probably 90 degrees...I had a total blast.

Phoenix's drummer is quite the busy boy these days. Besides being the driving force behind why Phoenix is able to rough off the edges of their polished studio sound live, he's in two other Swedish bands...
Indie Rockers The Perishers who are on Nettwork Records

and
the Sludge Doom outfit Cult of Luna

band sounded great and the crowd had a lot of energy. the sub 5' girl beside me had a bit too much energy in fact and pummeled the hell out of me while "dancing"
terrible venue though. and not just because of the neighborhood (some 10 year old threw a rock at my car) but the heat, the packed house and horrid sight lines made what should have been an awesome time unbearable. we left before the encore, which i dont know that i've ever done before. i'm never going back there again

>>>Phoenix's drummer ...
Killer drummer, but I guess he's not officially in the band. I noticed when they were on SNL the tinted band photos in the bumpers excluded him.
I wish someone would make a concert DVD of this band while they're hot. Maybe Michel Gondry? He's also from Versailles.

hopefully someone can do a poster for their next show.

this was such a FUN show... made even better by the crowd. after trying to hang up front (about 10 feet in front of the bar on the left side), we couldn't take the heat. moving back by the sound board was the best decision i've made in awhile :)

extended '1901' was the perfect set closer...and the pogoing in the end was soooooo fun :)

Great great show. I'm exhausted and my ears are still ringing, but completely worth it.
I agree with most of the sentiments here. It was boiling but for some reason it didn't bother me at all. After a full weekend, the sauna was theraputic.
Amazing Baby was utterly forgettable, if not just bad. How does a band as good as Phoenix get stuck with a third rate opener in a second rate venue?
Setlist was great - they played pretty much all of my favorites from United and It's Never Been Like That. Great to hear Funky Squaredance and I thought the heavier Sometimes in the Fall was brilliant.
It was a louder and heavier show than I was expecting from them. A lot of the nuances got lost in the noise but I still dug it.
I'm torn on the choice of venue. RnR Hotel really is too small for them. Not only could they have sold out black cat or 9:30, I think they would sound better in a bigger space. They were tweaking the levels all night and it all came together just right on probably only a handful of songs from where I was standing. I don't think you can play that loud in that small of a space and have it be very clear. I've seen some other good shows at Rock and Roll Hotel though, so I can't say that the venue itself or the PA is awful.
None of that mattered though for the last few songs and especially the finale. 1901 is my anthem of the summer and it was a perfect ending to the rocking sweaty set. People take way too many pictures at shows, but I would love to see one with the whole room jumping and fist pumping in unison. I agree with Bearman - it's that energy that keeps me going back to shows...it's rare and special when it works. The small room gave it an intimacy that I'm not sure would have been matched in a larger venue.
I hope they swing through again and play 9:30 so we can get the best of both...

Nice post Tom Servo.

Funny...last night reminded me of so many shows I saw at the old 9:30 Club...the stage is up to your knees, the sound isn't perfect, it's hot, sweaty, and totally cramped. If you don't stand in the right spot, you can't see a damn thing, and if a really huge band was playing the venue, it was tough to get tickets. But it made getting in special, and it made people feel that much more amped to see their favorite band in such a small place. Frankly, it made me feel really nostalgic for F Street. No gnarly smell or rats though, so that was an upside. Every now and then it's kind of nice to have a concert that just makes you appreciate the intimacy of a really, really cramped and hot & sweaty show. Sometimes when everything comes together like that it's brilliant. I remember the cold winter nights when you'd walk into the old 9:30 and it was about 85 degrees from all of the insanity of people dancing or moshing or whatever, then you'd stumble into the frigid air and risk pneumonia. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I am happy to have some diversity in the DC venues. I started having MAJOR flashbacks to the old club, and it was great.
