Title: The Grammys
Post by: James Ford on February 13, 2011, 10:40:39 pm
Watching for laughs.

Second time I've seen Muse. Awful, awful, awful. How do some of you actually like that band?

I was pleased she won, though they seem to be doing a Shelby Lynne with her since she has three albums out, the fist of which was 2006.

True, but I think it's more about the first breakthrough album than best new artist. Speaking of Shelby Lynne, what happened to her?

I saw Muse live for the first time in 2004 and they blew me away.  I saw them 2 other times that year.  Saw them open for U2 last year and didn't think they were as good.  Only because Bellamy didn't play the piano/keyboards as much.  He's a piano genius.  That's why I liked them.  Lyrically, they're not the best.

Muse are good.  They're sort of Queen 2.0.  There records are horribly clipped but then, everybody's are.
They do a pretty sweet version of "Feeling Good."  Almost as good as George Michael's.

Mark the day.  Valentine's Day, 2011.  Brian Wallace doth proclaimed:

One day, very soon, we will look back on these idiots:

with as much embarassment as we do, say a "Creed" or a "Limp Bizkit."  They're Arrested Development with better undergraduate degrees

And DEEP DOWN INSIDE, you know it too.   Your MIND may love "The Arcade Fire" but there's no way you HEART loves "The Arcade Fire."  They insist upon themselves.

For once, I agree with you.  Although I do think it's cool that a band who doesn't get much radio play from the autotune stations won album of the year.

I liked how Lady Gaga played her new song which is pretty universally considered a Madonna impersonation then thanked Whitney Houston for inspiring her to do the song.  That's good misdirection.

Interesting how Arcade Fire can be a band that sells out MSG twice and still be an under the radar upset Record of the Year winner.   Don't underestimate Arcade Fire.

i like that arcade fire album.  never listened to them before and i think every song is just as great as the last one . . . and to me that makes a great album.  and i couldn't hear, "man that sounds like ________."

To be specific, they won best rock album. Nice to see other bands in the nomination list, but they are overshadowed by all the hoopla of other artists and outfits. The Grammys have been a joke for a couple of decades now. Let's hope Muse's notoriety isn't b/c they are the "Twilight" band.

The Suburbs were indeed from Minneapolis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Suburbs), according to wikipedia.  However, I can't verify The Suburb's wiki page wasn't defaced by Justin Bieber fans (http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/02/14/6052555-bieber-fans-go-on-grammy-fueled-wikipedia-rampage).

Glen Beck on Muse

Glenn Beck calls Muse's Grammys performance 'a call for revolution'

the right-wing radio host suggested  ?Uprising? was inciting revolution. ?You have basically a call for revolution by this group,? Beck said. ?Now, you have to remember these are Europeans, and they have been degraded for a very long time. Really, since the beginning of time. They have had very few glimpses of real freedom, even when England won the Second World War. They didn?t go into freedom. That?s where the Road to Serfdom came from.?

Let's look at this logically:

Muse represents a call for revolution.

Any call for revolution in the post-modern world is represented by Che Guevera.

Therefore, Matt Bellamy is the new Che Guevera.

(Despite what English majors who still read Cosmo and watch "Gossip Girl" think)
Che Guevera, at no point in his life, ate pussy.

Matt Bellamy knocked up Goldie Hawn's daughter.

Therefore, Muse cannot represent a call for revolution.

Reductio ad absurdum

Counterpoint:

* - Goldie Hawn's daughter is the sloppy seconds of the lead singer of the Black Crowes

- The Black Crowes had a song called "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution"

I remember a couple of years ago when "The Smashing Pumpkins" were about to release "Zeitgeist" and I called bullshit on THAT.  And EVERYBODY on this board was like:  "You're a fool!"  "You're an idiot!"  "The greatest band of the 90's is coming back!", "How DARE you criticize the genius of Billy Corgan?!?!!" etc, etc.  Find the thread.

How did that work out for you?  History demonstrated that I was right.  The Smashing Pumpkins were an overrated joke of a band THEN.  They're an overrated joke of a band NOW.  And ALWAYS WILL BE.  How many times have you listened to "Tarantula" recently?

So keep chirping about The Arcade Fire.  How they saved your over-extended souls.  Time will, once again, prove I'm correct.

You're all sheep.  You don't love music.  You love music you're supposed to love.

Being one who tends to do all of my walking on the other side of the road, I love Brian. Seriously. Not romantically of course but as a member of this forum.

Granted, I rarely agree with a lot of what he says but that's all besides the point. Sometimes I actually agree with him regarding some things that everyone else disagrees with him about. Thing is, for me, it's not at all about what he likes and dislikes. It's all about his delivery. He writes well and he often makes me laugh. Added bonus, he's good at calling bullshit on others... even though, again, I 'may' not agree with him. Then again, occasionally, he's right on the mark! He's got balls. Strange ones, but he's got 'em.

Reading Brian's posts are a whole lot like how it use to be for me when I would bother with the NME, especially about 10 years or so ago. They could tear the living shit out of my favorite band but they always did it in a way that left me laughing my ass off. Ultimately, both Brian and the NME are great well written musical comedy with a punch.

Pretty sure Walalce is a big Smiths fan.  Pavement, White Stripes, and assorted Brit-Pop bands also come to mind.

I like Walalce.  He is annoying but in a far wittier way than Rhett Miller 1.0 was.

Perhaps I just like him is because he gets all the Radiohead fans in a tizzy.  Radiohead has put out some good music but their worshippers can be insufferable.   I also think he is on the right track with Arcade Fire.  The first album was a good listen, but they got old quick.

I pride myself in not watching the grammys but was sucked into the dark hole shortly after it aired and was forced to watch it dvr style. Most of the artists that performed sounded AWFUL! However I was happy to see that people who weren't thinking they were going to win did! hooray for the underdogs!
