There are some goodies that I want to pick up on Record Store Day this year. The following stores in DC are participating:
CD Warehouse
Som Records
Red Onion Records & Books
Smash!
Melody Record Shop
Politics & Prose Bookstore
Crooked Beat Records
Does anyone here have experience shopping on past Record Store Days? Can someone steer me towards the best stores to hit?
-
CD Warehouse still exists?? I thought it became a yogurt store.
-
CDs still exist?
-
well some of the items are extremely limited... there may be only one... hence THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
if you guarantee me i can get the one item i will tell you the best place and the worse place..
-
You have my unconditional guarantee.
-
since its no fun not sharing the info i will do it even though there can be only one..
well i will say that it seems to me that everyone runs to crooked beat so i'd forget them. i mean i know he puts in a lot of time getting tons of copies but he has a line that goes blocks and blocks....its insane....
som records is the best record store in dc.. last year the owner included a $20 gift certificate if you spent a certain amount like i think 50 bucks..talk about a deal.. also he had the goods...
the guy who owns red onion creeps me out a bit..gives off a great vibe if you spend but if you don't seems to get pouty... i also know he holds stuff for regulars.. maybe they all do this i don't know... anyways i avoid that store
last year i hit cd cellar in arlington a day or two later and they still had some stuff.. i think the virginia stores are good because maybe less kids hit them up
i had no idea that politics and prose even sold vinyl....aren't they run by a couple of old ladies? i'm not sure they'd know what to do to order all the stuff but i could be wrong
i'm not good at competitive shopping.. there is one item i want this year...
-
+1 for Som being awesome. Haven't been there on RSD though.
If I was doing any DC area store for RSD, it would be CD Cellar in Falls Church. But that's mainly because it's my favorite record store to begin with, and there's not that much I'm interested in for Record Store Day. I do know they're participating, but they couldn't tell me what they'd be getting. They're always pretty busy on Saturdays, so I imagine that'll only be worse on Record Store Day.
-
I go to Crooked Beat every year. Very sizable line hours before the store opens, so if there is something limited you want -- get there early. If you are curious as to how many copies they will have of something in particular contact Bill, the owner, as he has a pretty good idea of what they'll be receiving already.
-
In theory it's ok, I guess but Record Store Day is lame because it caters to anal-retentive fetishists.
I looked at that list and it's basically re-released vinyl. Limited edition. And colored. BFD.
I mean does it REALLY mean a lot to anyone to get a 1 in 4000 copy of "Hormoaning" on vinyl? Vinyl nerds, yes. But what about the other 99.999999% of the population who doesn't care about copper audio cables and 180 gram vinyl?
It would be cool if they released new...or previously unreleased...or demo....or live music on Record Store Day. But they don't. How hard is it for any popular band to record four songs from a live show and press it onto vinyl?
Ohhhhhhh.....A 3 LP version of Jimmy Eat World's "Bleed American"?!?!?! I can barely CONTAIN MYSELF!

I have been to soundgarden in baltimore and the line isn't too bad.
there is also Traxx on Wax in Catonsville, and they get some stuff too, but not sure how extensive. Great store though. You should check it out.

PRO: This is what I'm talking about! New, unreleased stuff. Not all re-issues.
CON: I predict several, tragic, hipster Who-in-Cincinnati catastrophes. I mean, 2000 copies?!! And a given store MAY only get two or three!?!? And you thought getting Death Cab For Cutie tickets was hard....
Brian
-
Agreed about reissues. They don't do much for me. But new material is nice. Limiting such high demand stuff as a Radiohead single to 2,000 copies seems a bit counter-productive though. That's the kind of release that would do big business for the stores RSD is supposed to be about, but it's kinda pointless when they'll only (maybe) get one or two copies. I understand the limited supply=colelctor's item thing, it just seems strange.
-
Yeah, either way, this event sort of underlines how physical media has largely become the province of serious fetishists. Hard for me to come to terms with, since I used to be such a record store junkie, but true.
-
one would think that i should be into records. i mean really into them. my distain/distaste for the nuevo generational acceptance of bit to byte jukebox downloads should have me frothing for the sound of the record. then again, i have mass acceptance of the cd. i do though enjoy buying boxes of records from auctions sometimes and going through them to see if anything is neato wortho, like the time i sold some punk band with x's on their hands and young guy brooklyn mugs from the early 80's on ebay for like seventy dollars.
i'm sure all record players are not the same, but is there a brand that is the general best for mid dollar range (not super top of the line for amateurs) purchase that i can hunt around to find . . . so to perhaps get into this thing called lps. one further step back from the hard drive storage form of music is one step closer to the way it needs to be.
-
I think everyone should be into records but I'm glad they are not. More for me!
-

When do you claim this turning point to be? Record stores (those that sold vinyl) have catered to these people, me included, for at least the last 15-20 years.

I'm pretty sure it's been longer than 20 years.
-
I still think that if they really want a younger generation to go to record stores and appreciate vinyl they have to release new and/or unreleased MUSIC not just 1,000 copies of an old single on pink vinyl. 80% of this is for fetishists. Don't collect books, read books. Don't collect vintage guitars or cars. Play or drive. That's something baby boomers introduced and the following generations just followed along like sheep. I think Philadelphia magazine said it best:
It's lame enough to collect action figures. But to never take them out of the packaging...
ANYHOW, looking over the two lists, the UK has a FAR better list of Record Store Day stuff. They have the right idea. They even had a brand new Blur song last year that the U.S. didn't.
Compare this two lists and tell me which one is cooler:
US:
http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases (http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases)
UK:
http://www.recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-product.aspx (http://www.recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-product.aspx)
I just glancing at it, the U.K. gets: Arctic Monkeys, Badly Drawn Boy, Beastie Boys, Beck/Bat for Lashes split single, Bob Dylan (Tings Tings remix), Broken Bells, Charlotte Gainsbourg/Villigers split single, Danger Mouse split single, Echo & The Bunnymen, Franz Ferdinand covers EP, Hercules & Love Affair, Interpol, Nada Surf, New Order/Joy Division, Primal Scream, Queen (actually unreleased material in UK, previously released in US.), St. Etienne, Suede, The Clash, The Smiths, The White Stripes, Tracy Thorn, etc.
The U.S. gets NONE of those.
Brian
-
First off, I fully agree with you on your US vs. UK Record Store Day contributions.
Secondly, I'm absolutely horrified by you, Brian, and others with your psycho eugenics minded attitude towards older people! I wonder how willing you will be to march off to the furnaces once you reach the ripe old age of 26?
Thirdly, collecting was not started by Baby Boomers. It was going on before we were even born.
Finally, I think at least half of those musicians on your UK list that you claimed to be better (and it probably is) are.... BABY BOOMERS!!!!! Wipe them out and it's a much less impressive list.
-
Probably just me but I'm not impressed by the UK list at all. Mostly retreads. Who cares?
Agree wholeheartedly that this limited edition, one-day-only, crap really doesn't help generate the kind of buzz that record stores really need. And some of the stuff that's being released that day has been made available in advance (Off!, for example). So, again, who cares?
If people want to collect that stuff that's fine, I guess.
-
I'm hoping to get a copy of the new Built to Spill 45 covering Ripple among other things. Probably end up having to try eBay or Discogs for that. If you relax and hit the stores in the afternoon the lines are gone and its just a nice fun day at the office. I'll probably try and hit CD Cellar in Arlington and then work my way up to Joe's. I don't need an excuse to buy records but I'll take it!

I miss Orpheus. Also used to buy stuff at Rose Records and Rock Records in Chicago back in the day.
-
add to that list the other Record Time store that just close in the Detroit Area, which was my favorite record store in the world and also where I earned my nickname...
-
:-[ That was depressing.

Interesting read about how Record Store Day might be bad for music:

Not to mention the fact that a real collector wouldnt leave their house on record store day. 5000 copies of anything isnt that exclusive. A real collector would just grab the mp3s of the 5000 copy Flaming Lips release off the internet, and use their money for something like this:
These copies are without the proper jackets, but come with custom-painted jackets by the band and Friends Records. No two are alike, and there are only 15 of them in the whole wide world.
(*I got #6 of 16, double score on the typo in the numbering)
Heck every witch house release has been of runs of small numbers, all "instant collectors items". Dont you want to own one of the only copies of Mater Suspiria Vision's latest opus, limited run of 75?
This record store day business seems like a last effect by the big labels (i see a few on the sponsor side, so pardon if there are also a ton of indies that i didnt notice) to make money off physical products. I mean AC/DC live two track? (And i know its to save real record stores, but the article linked above made it sound horrid to be the retailer in this for one day of ok payout.)
I hope everyone knows Im being semi serious. I dont collect too many things, but I have a few small run vinyls of bands that i love, a few tour posters, and some other things, so I get it. But to me, anything in the 1000s isnt limited and If i was giving Flaming Lips money, seeing them live or getting a tour poster, whose numbers would be pretty small, would be a better way to collect something cool from them.
(*I know Weekends isnt that famous, nor may never be, but you never know... I still got a one of a kind piece of art for my collection)

Bummer. I bought tons of stuff and spent many, many hours in Arboria Records (#11 - although it was at a different location when I was there).
-
the line at Soundgarden in Fells Point has gotten longer every year....I suspect the same will be this year. Last year I think we got there 30 mins before opening and there were probably 50 people in front of us
-
I'm not even sure what the "holy grail" items will be this year.
Is that Pink Floyd record rare? People go ape-sh*t for Springsteen so that one will probably be prized.
I don't think there's a Beatles record. That Radiohead single isn't on any list. I'm guessing the true music geeks will want that Big Star record. Younger people will go for "Hormoaning" by Nirvana even though they've heard all those songs on "Incesticide."
Brian
-
By "younger people" do you mean people in the 35-45 age range who grew up on Nirvana? As opposed to the AARP people who would want the other stuff?

I'm bummed there's no Panic! At the Disco record. They JUST put out a new album.
Brian
-
Don't know how they all decide who puts out what but you'd think it would be a broad selection. Something for everyone to get as many people involved as possible. Then again, maybe we're only seeing what the media selects for us to see. Not so much out of control but purely out of personal picking and choosing what to report.
-
guess i'm a true music geek!
;D

Score one for team USA! Even Brian should like this one. Just a shame that most of us can't attend.

The holy grail item is the Oxbow 'King Of The Jews' LP.

According to their website this new, unreleased Radiohead single will only be available in the U.K. tomorrow (just reinforcing that the UK's Record Store Day is 20 times better than the US one):
http://radiohead.com/deadairspace/ (http://radiohead.com/deadairspace/)
So no entitled hipster violence in acquiring one, OK?. A liberal arts education and a nice import when you turn 17 shouldn't make you that angry. There will be a live Pink Floyd album available tomorrow so just smoke a jay and CHILL OUT, MAN!
It says it will be out in the States on June 14th.

so, any tales of stampedes? hipsters crushed to death inside the stores? tales of alienation and human suffering because they sold their one copy of <insert name holy-grail record here> before you could get to the counter? any hot chicks???

It wasn't bad. Got the few things I wanted, but missed out on the Built to Spill single. Plus spend a ton more money, which is probably the point.
Yeah, I wanted that Lips set, but it's expensive...and on their site. No need to rush for that.

Got to soundgarden at 8:30, line as already all the way down the street. Store opened st 10, didn't get to pick my records until about 11 - most rare stuff was sold out bynen. At least I got the grinderman stuff
-
The store I went to got in ONE Lady Gaga "Born This Way" picture disc but the guy behind me wanted one for his niece.
So there. I can be magnanimous when I choose to be.
I still don't know what the most desired records were. I think a lot of people wanted the Phish soundcheck 45 and the Pink Floyd live album. The store I went to had neither. They had several of both White Stripes 45's but they didn't have the Rolling Stones one which was odd. Screw "limited edition." Mick Jagger will authorize PRECISELY the amount they need to press to maximize their profits. Believe that.
Isn't the Flaming Lips thing just their first five studio albums on vinyl in a box? Am I missing something? What is so coveted about it?
Brian
-
I believe it is coveted due to the vinyl being colored.
-
everything but soft bulletin had been out of print for over a decade and the former's reprint which came out not long ago is already fetching for high prices.
-
Right. Rather than paying $$$ I'd rather just buy that. STill, didn't seem that coveted. Store I was at had two or three in the morning...no one biting. Was also about $15 bucks cheaper on their site.

-
the greatest thing that ever existed in the sense of space and time related to the band of the flaming lips was when i purchased off of ebay a box the size of a microwave filled with old tapes of early lips shows from OK and magazines with them in them and rare cds of stuff and other things i forgot because it has been sitting in my closet for a while. that is why i like ebay over the nostalgia of the civilized world.

I just realized what you're talking about. The Built to Spill "Ripple" single? My store had tons of those. But like, it didn't have the Duran Duran or The Cars single. It's weird. What stores get what. It's like a pack of baseball cards. It's a feeding frenzy. You wind up buying stuff you have no idea what it is. You just see there's one of something and you grab it.
I didn't think the Franz covers album was being released over here. The fates agreed with me. Nirvana and Foo Fighters are either overrated or really suck.

Amongst other items CD Cellar in Falls Church as of an hour ago had 2 copies of the Flaming Lips box set and 2 copies of the Beady Eye box set
-
So did anyone get the Big Star 'Third (Test Pressing Edition)' LP? Given the brisk sales for 4-5 times the retail of $35 on Ebay, that's looking to be the 'holy grail' piece this time around, though I don't think even one store in the DC area had it, not sure about Baltimore.
-
Thanks serpent boy. Those prices are cheaper than any of the stores I went to. However, with shipping they obviously became pricier.
I think the most desired records were the Big Star one and the Phish soundcheck. Very few stores got in the Nirvana one. The Pink Floyd live album must have gone quick. And I saw a bunch of the Warner split singles but never saw the ZZ Top/Mastadon one which is odd.
And could someone clue me in to why the Beady Eye box set was so desired? Let me remind you, it's OASIS without any OASIS songs.

Other Music in NYC (www.othermusic.com) appears to have a lot of RSD releases for sale at good prices. Searching 'rsd11' on their site will pull up the list. However, I'm not sure if they really have these items in stock or if they're just in their inventory system b/c they had them over the weekend. I ordered a couple records, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

To follow up on my earlier post, it looks like most RSD releases are available at Other Music for mail order at retail prices. The list of RSD11 titles on their site has doubled since last night and now includes several titles I think some of you were looking for (Phish and Nirvana come to mind). No Big Star, but no surprise there.

thanks.. i'll keep my fingers crossed that order i just placed goes through.. they actually had two of the three items i wanted... the grateful dead mono and the phish soundchecks.
i'm skeptical it will go through but lets see..

I think there's a decent chance you'll get your records. The Phish and GD records weren't on their mail order site last night, so I think they have them to sell. As long as no one purchased them prior to your order, I think you're good.

Or not:
Hey Andrew,
Unfortunately, your order has been canceled. This RSD item is not currently available and is being removed from our site.
I apologize for the inconvenience. Your card was never charged.
Cheers,
Pam
Not too bummed...just tried to order that Foos LP for a friend.

they cancelled my order.. oh well
thanks for tip anyways!
-
Just got a similar email, but they still had nearly everything I ordered (about ten RSD items). My email was a little more detailed, though. Apparently "a computer glitch" resulted in all RSD items appearing on the site, whether they had any left in stock or not. Weird how it loaded to their site in batches, but whatever. Wish they could have sent that email just a little earlier.

i don't care what happened . . . i just find it amusing that hutch wanted grateful dead and phish. hutch to me seems like the kind of person who enjoys republican fundraisers, pearl jam and perrier.
-
I like Pearl Jam ;D
-
Thanks for the Other Music link. I got those two Black Angels records.
-
Cool. Glad someone else found what they were looking for after all the false hope I was dishing out. They had nearly everything I was looking for.
-
there will be a limited supply of Supercollider/The Butcher 12" vinyl available from W.A.S.T.E. in the foreseeable future.
Thanks

They do a second "Record Store Day" on Black Friday now.
And I guess this is the final list:
http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases (http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases)
And color me IMPRESSED! Such young, exciting, innovative artists and music!
I mean, is there a hotter artist right now than Janis Joplin? Move over, Adele! And we get TWO releases from her? How cool is that? Also, two from the Yardbirds! They're AWESOME! I think they're barely out of high school. Aren't they from Roanoke? Plus, let's face it, John Lennon's "Imagine" and Pete Townsend's "Quadrophenia Demos" are going to be fighting it out for Pitchfork's best of 2011. Finally, new, YOUNG music. Has anyone else here heard of "The Loving Spoonful?" They sound a lot like "The xx". I hope they're HALF as awesome!

RSD has gone to crap
-
Weren't the Yardbirds just in town? Ok, Rockville, technically. Janis Joplin never comes around here anymore.
Nothing on that list interests me except the ToN box set. I'd like to have that. Very tempting.
Maybe it's mostly older folks who buy vinyl?
-
Anyone going on Friday? Im off work so I'm going to try to get the john cale limited edition.
-
Might go up to Sound Garden to see what they have. Thing is there is nothing on the Black Friday list that is a must-have, IMO.
-
Yeah, I think I'm going to Soundgarden too. There is literally only one release I want. It's weird how much of the stuff on sale Friday is just reissues or demos from older acts.
-
Went to Soundgarden. There were probably 25 people in line when I got there 30 minutes before they opened. I couldn't find a copy of the one thing I wanted to get. If anyone sees any record store selling surplus copies of things on their website, please post it in this thread.
-
What did they get and what were you looking for? I didn't get up until 9. Might go record shopping later tho.
-
It looks like they had pretty much everything. I'm not sure how many copies they had for each special but I didn't really see many people that looked or sounded disappointed.
I was just looking for the John Cale limited edition EP. They released it as a cd and made 2,000 copies but I've called literally every participating store in Maryland and no one got a copy.
-
http://www.amoeba.com/buy-stuff/category/record-store-day/page1.html
They have a ton of stuff available online if anyone is looking for anything. I was finally able to get a copy of the EP I wanted!
-
I ordered the Type O box set and seemed to get a pretty good deal on it.
Whether or not I actually get it is another thing entirely.
-

try cd cellar in fallS church. I wasn't looking but I'm very sure I saw a copy this afternoon

I've complained about this before but if the main purpose of this (Record Store Day) is to bring in more money for independent record stores that are struggling, then I guess their strategy is correct. But if you are trying to expose anyone to new music and/or release some cool unreleased stuff from older bands that is ACCESSIBLE then it's a failure. It's all numbered, collectible vinyl. Baby boomer collectible crap. I guess they know they're market.
But money's tight. That Type O Negative box is nice but it's $100! The Kings of Leon boxed set is $100!
A lot of the stuff I saw was all over $50.
I always maintain that more bands should use this to release great sounding live records or demos or something. I mean why can't someone like Radiohead release a great-sounding album of live material and charge $25 for it? Have all the proceeds go to Greenpeace or Occupy Wall Street or something? A. They could get that ready in a couple of weeks B.) Everyone would buy it. C.) It would help out record stores.
Brian
-
nothing is better than when a.) brian makes perfect sense and b.) he puts down kings of leon at the same time.
-
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers did release a live LP.. only seven songs though...
Its all I picked up.. I thought this was the worst RSD related event I have yet to see.. bunch of overpriced junk.. the Beatles and Lennon boxes supposedly sound like crap too.
I would have liked the Dead's Europe 72 Vol 2.. but at 70$ I passed.
-
Impossible to argue with any of that, Brian. Well done.
I don't collect vinyl - or anything else, for that matter - so I only get the stuff I really want. And I do want that box set. $100 for 6 records is hardly a bargain but, IMO, it isn't a ripoff, either.
Edit - didn't get the box set. :'( My order was taken but the shop ran out of boxes. I've seen where I can still get it for ~$120 but I can't justify that.

Well, actually I don't want to pick on Type O Negative. What they had WAS a nice set and I don't know what the record stores paid but was probably worth $75 or whatever. But $60 for four Beatles 45s? Because Beatles stuff is so rare! What's Jack White's/Third Man motto? "Tangible, Collectible and Digital?" Release the 180 gram four-disc whatever for the collectors but throw something fun out there for $15, too.
And sorry to disappoint, Walkie but I DO like what that box set was advertising. EARLY Kings of Leon. I loved them when they were young, mysterious and sounded like the Southern Strokes. How can you deny this?:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiEZ04iQ6f8
or a slower version by a Northern Stroke:

This isn't a RSD exclusive. It's been available at www.dead.net for a while now ($60). Today they've got everything on sale for 20% off and free shipping. That's not too bad.
-

6 double albums, that is. Really is a pretty good deal.....especially now that I don't have one.

I guess this could also be posted in the "When reality reflects The Onion" thread, but EC makes a similar point to mine:
http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpps/entertainment/elvis-costello-urges-fans-not-to-buy-his-latest-release-dpgonc-20111129-fc_16152769 (http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpps/entertainment/elvis-costello-urges-fans-not-to-buy-his-latest-release-dpgonc-20111129-fc_16152769)
Do we have to revise basic economic theory? When A.) the economy's bad and B.) the demand is low (for physical music media) wouldn't you LOWER prices?
Brian

So they add scarcity to the mix, i.e. "limited edition".

Anyone gearing up for this weekend? Not a ton of must-haves, IMO. That Flaming Lips & Friends album will ultimately be available through their site, and the Uncle Tupelo stuff as well. only think I'm really psyched for is Mclusky Does Dallas on vinyl. Though the live Devo set might be cool too.
-
I really want the Preteen Zenith release.
-
The BRMC Howl and Howl Sessions vinyl re-releases are up on their Web site. I already pre-ordered.
I also want the Feist/Mastodon split and the Beach House "Lazuli" 7".
-
I read this entire thread yesterday. Should have bumped it.
I only want the Refused reissue. Can't imagine I will need to be in line at 6 am in order to get one. At least I hope not.
-
Feist/Mastodon split
Like the art for that one. Curious what it sounds like but not looking to buy it.

I thought the Flaming Lips posted this was it for that release. I want it, but I can't make it down on Saturday.
-
Oh really? I had just assumed it would be released later. Seems most of their rare collaboration stuff gets pushed back out at later dates, but I could be wrong.
-
i read there are 10,000 copies of the flaming lips item so i think its going to be real easy to find..
the tough one to get will be the phish junta... i betcha it will be going for $400 on ebay...easily..unless they overpress which does happen
there is another band that has some stuff coming out that i want but i will not divulge what... ;D
having a kid though i don't see myself schleppign to a record store at 8 am to stand in line...
last year this guy bought up an entire store of RSD releases to flip ...he was so obvious "is this a records store day exclusive? ok i will take it.. this one no? ok i will leave it.." pissed me off and kind of turned me off to the whole thing... the owner of the record store shoudl have told him to take a flying leap.
-
Yeah, I'm usually of the "get there at 9:45 mindset" for the same reason. Honestly, most of the stuff I want isn't in the rare category, so I'm usually not too worried. Think the only thing I can remember NOT getting was the BTS "Ripple" single, but the store I went to didn't get it, so what can you do?

There are 5,000 total copies of Junta. 2500 a piece of the two versions. I know Crooked Beat received a number of each.

crooked beat gets everything..that guy is very good about that...i think he lives in my hood here in arlington because i see him at the post office mailing stuff (vinyl/cds he's selling on ebay judging by the packages).. they also get the longest lines by far... crazy crazy long lines..
-
Drove by the sound garden in fells point around 8am - longest line ever, so turned around and went home. Saw a pic taken at 5:30am and looked like there were already 20-30 people in line. Crazy
-
That's nuts. I'll never get out early enough to take advantage of RSD. Sucks but I'm not getting up at 4am to beat the crowd for a 7-inch.
-
Whoa... spent way too much money today. It's impossible for me to sleep in and I made it to the CD/Game Exchange in Silver Spring at 7:40am. I was first in line and got everything I wanted plus some... good day!
-

did you get the Phish? Thats one I wanted.. but not that badly.. I'm still hoping to get it.. I'd like the cheaper version.
I got what I really wanted : the two Luna LPs .. and I woke up at 930!
also bought the black keys el camino 45 rpm
CD Game Exchange is a great place.. I've bought so much vinyl from them over the years.. I wish they still had stores in DC! Silver Spring is 20 miles from me!
-
Got a late start, and managed to hit both CD Cellars on my round trip, but didn't find anything. Luckily found Heady Fwends on eBay for list price, but still searching for Mclusky Do Dallas, which is what I really wanted anyway. If anyone sees any stores with RSD stuff online, let me know.
Still didn't stop me from spending quite a bit...but I guess that's the point, right?
-

Yup, the impetus of me getting my ass outta bed. I went there wanting for Junta and maybe one other release... A few hundred dollars later, my morning was complete. Crooked Beat had multiple copies still available last night if you're still looking.
-
thanks for the headsup.. if I lived in DC i'd swing by but ain't going to make it...
I'm torn on Junta.. I want it but I don't want to pay $50! :) although if I'd seen a copy at my store for $50 I'd have bought it... :)

Listening to this album for the first time in at least 15 years, sounds absolutely pristine. Also, not sure where you live but the Soundgarden in B-more had at LEAST 20 copies this morning.
I picked up a second one. :o :o :o :o

wow, so you a big vinyl collector?
-
Soundgarden still has a pretty decent selection of RSD releases on their shelves, if anyone's still looking. They had at least 5 copies of the Flaming Lips record this afternoon, and a lot of singles.
-
They still have the 7", but not the record anymore.
Running impedes my ability to participate in RSD. I found a copy on ebay though for not a terrible amount.
-
FYI for anyone interested in Mclusky Do Dallas, looks like you can buy it on Too Pure's website. $26 total, rather than the $40 plus you see on eBay:
http://www.toopure.com/
And the Flaming Lips site has the Mastodon split. Looks like they were selling Heady Fwends too, but it's sold out. I remember the same thing happening with Heady Nuggets last year, so you might want to keep you eyes peeled.

I got there around 11 AM and the line was ridicously long. So went to lunch and figured the line would die down. Went back at 12:15 still huge line. Took a walk around town came back at 1:10 still huge line. So decided to go home. When we were going back to car a couple of guys were telling parking lot attendant that they waited in line for 2 hours. 2 Hours??? I mean really what was there that you would wait two hours in line for? A beach house single? Come on. Ridiculous.
It makes me not want to stop in a record store ever again and just buy stuff in Amazon. Sound Garden has all their vinyl in a little room. I would say they failed at record store day.

I agree. but some people insist RSD is a huge success... maybe it is but i don't like it much
my story went to store..guy opened late...found two items i wanted..the two luna records... decided to get black keys record.. cost would have been $101 except they made a mistake and charged me $96 which I only realized later
i could have bought same items (probalby still can) at JRs website for $77 with free shipping!
i'm sorry, i support my record stores big time... but come on.
