oh yeah . . . and i have one thing to say to these "doomsday" people:

seven day adventists.  how many times did they change their "doom date" before they finally gave up.  i love how people of earth think they can have the brain power of a god, to predict such things.

i think on 5/21 . . . i will smoke pot, stay naked, drink the finest beer i have, and try to get through this obnoxiously hard rpg i'm playing.

haven't played it yet and based on the reviews it's more of the same, but i like the humor of the lego games and I enjoy the mindless fun.  Based on the demo I played for Lego Star Wars III, it's a departure from the older games in terms of game play.  But, having never seen Clone Wars on which it's based, I decided to get Pirates instead...

an old school rpg that came out for the gamecube system called tales of symphonia.  it loves the ole, "you beat a tough boss, so here's ten more puzzles all of a sudden to solve then two more bosses, harder than last, and you don't get to save between them all.

i had refused after all this time to go next gen system . . . and i'm glad since they are going to drop the price on the xbox (rumour going around).  i can't wait to get the 360 and delve into all these games i've missed over the years, like halo and deadspace and bioshock and ff13.  i love acting gleefully, nerdy childish over computer toys.

The Rapture is supposed to start at 6PM.  The only question now is - in what time zone?

Word is, the end begins on May 21st. What is everyone's plans?

Showing up for work. Now if this thing turns out to be real, let me know and I'll instead go party on the beach... if the sun ever bothers to come out!

There's another date that some keep talking about. Think it's December 21st, 2012. I can't keep track of all these dates and how often the world is supposed to end. It's more like ending a month without slipping into another billing cycle.

So did the rapture happen or not? I need to call some of my relatives to see if they are still around.

We were out camping on judgment day. Had this conversation at the picnic table:

Three year (almost 4) old daughter: Mommy, where do flies sleep?
Mommy: In HELL.
Daughter: What's Hell?

Later we went on a 3.8 mile RT hike to a waterfall. Our dog stopped to take a dump off to the side. My daughter starts yelling "Three fucking shits!" at the top of her lungs and was so proud of herself that she repeated it another half dozen times. She did a 3.8 mile hike with quite a bit of elevation loss and gain. In three hours flat (The book said it takes 3 hours 40 minutes). Without getting carried once. She can say whatever the fuck she wants to.

i fell into the same trap.  based on how high and mighty the missus acts and how much she talks down on everything i do, i totally assumed she would be front of the line for the rapture.  so i went nuts on saturday too, assuming i was off the hook... now i'm REALLY in the dog house.  biggest no-show in history!

actually it was rather funny - for those whom abortion isn't a sacred cow that can't even be referred to in jest.  YMMV.

It's a child, not a cow.

Whether you're pro-choice or pro-life I think most can agree that an abortion is an unfortunate event.

Resorting to a coathanger or a back alley when one is unable to have one performed in the safe confines of a doctor's office is more unfortunate.

P.S. Anything can be funny if given the proper context. Get the stick out of your ass (or the hanger out of your vagina).

My apologies for the unneccessary sarcasm.

I guess I would hope that you're not too blind to see that different people have different sensitivities. It doesn't mean that they "have a stick up their ass", it means their sensitivities are different than yours. If Person A made a joke that referenced rape, gaybashing, or the Holocaust "in the right context" and Person B stated they were offended, would that mean that Person B had a stick up their ass?

As for my own personal views, I'm pro-choice. I want abortions to be safe, legal, and increasingly rare. While the pro-lifers are hellbent on the unreastic notion of making abortion nonexistent, the other side isn't focused enough on the "increasingly rare" part of the equation.

Yeah that kind of abortion is even funnier. hahahaha

Haha.  ;D Nobody was in sight. What is allowed around mommy and daddy is definitely not allowed around other people.

I'm one of those parents who pride themselves on having a healthy, athletic, creative, nature appreciating child not addicted to a corporate spoon-fed Disney/video games/high fructose/meat centered existence.

Rhett, I get where you're coming from and appreciate it. I've got a wild sense of humor, am pro-choice and a woman but I too thought that it was delivered a little heavy handed though only bothered enough to frown for a moment or two.

You know as well as I do that if you would have made the very same kind of joke about one of the very same jokesters' sensitive spots, the way they are around here, they would have relished tearing you a new one!

let's remember the statement/joke that started this lil' venture into pro-/anti-abortion:

God decided he wasn't ready for the Rapture, so he had it aborted.

there was no mention of a baby.  there was no judgement on the desirability/need for fewer abortions.  just the use of the verb "to abort" got james going.

do people get equally upset whenever a shuttle launch is aborted?  there's that word again, not allowed using it!  are there pro-lifers at cape canaveral, with "shuttle launches don't deserve to be aborted" signs? ;D

Do people get upset when people use the word "rape" and it's not referring to a violent act against women?

The joke mention God and abortion in the same sentence, and in a thread about wacky Christians. If you don't see the implicated tie-in the baby abortion, you're even dumber than your screen name.

If there was no implied connection to baby abortion, then what exactly is the point of the joke (that you found so amusing)?

no, they don't.  for example, people talk about being raped by Ticketmaster fees.

If there was no implied connection to baby abortion, then what exactly is the point of the joke (that you found so amusing)?

the point of the joke was the use of the verb "to abort" and then watch people's panties be twisted into a knot.  it's like a bull seeing red - a mere use of the word and off they go...

I guess people shouldn't be getting mad at Joakim Noah either. After all, he was only calling the guy a cigarette.

They shouldn't.

Here's the key. What you wrote, Rhett.

Also, look at the specific wording. "... so he had it aborted." That's the type of phrasing that is usually used for aborting a baby. If it were a rocket launch, it would usually be "... so it was aborted." Nit picky, I know, but that's the subtle communication within the art of the joke, if that's what you could call it. Besides, Doom has on occasion made several references in the past about never wanting kids and other eugenics sort of cracks towards various groups of people. There's a pattern there.

As I said before, I am pro-choice but I will call a spade a spade when I see it as such.

You know, it's not the joke that bothers me so much. It only made me winch for a moment and that was it. What really bugs me is all the denial and side stepping of the issue. Grow some balls you guys and admit what you know damned well that it really meant! Gesh.

Of course, ultimately, only Doom can accurately tell us for sure what he meant.

Apparently, you're not friends with anyone who has been raped, or anybody who has faced the tough emotional decision to terminate a pregnancy. Amazing what some people think is funny.

actually, i am.  i've stayed up all night with a woman who had to struggle with the decision, and then i helped her through it the next day (no, it wasn't mine).  i've been in long-term relationships with 2 women who were victims of sexual assault.  so get off you goddamn high horse, rhett, 'cause you're not impressing anyone.  you're coming off as a jerk and a bully.  "the word has meaning *FOR ME*, so *I* get to decide how you do and don't use it!!!  and i'll shame you into thinking like me!".  fuck off with your thought-control.  if you can't handle people poking at your sacred cows, get the fuck off the internet.

you've done this sort of self-righteous grandstanding before - remember when you lied and told us that someone in your office had a child who committed suicide on the metro, in order to get us to stop making wise-cracks?  nice strategies ya got there.

Would you toss around abortion jokes to those friends? Would you use a reference to being "raped by ticketmaster" around your friend who got raped? I promise I won't, if I ever meet your friends.

Like Frank Gallagher said in that other (closed) thread:

but don't worry, i get it rhett.  you're in daddy-mode.  ya know those parents who can't talk about anything else other than their kids?  you're a variation on that: you only see the world through your i'm-a-dad glasses (nice frames, btw).  i think it's admirable how engaged you are with the upbringing of your child.  we need more parents like that.  but could you please keep your parenting private?  i don't need misguided life-lessons from you ("these are words you can and can't use, even in jest"), certainly not until you can tell the difference between a public forum and a private conversation.

HA HA...that's hilarious. I can't tell you how many times coworkers etc have said to me..."huh? You have kids?" Then I've had to make up an excuse because I didn't have a photo of my kids on me.

And what's up with those people who have photo's of their kids taped up between the gauges on the dash in their car? That's just creepy....

BTW - my daughter just graduated BU with honors this weekend...okay, that's my kid-bragging out of the way till my 8 year old graduates.

HA HA...that's hilarious. I can't tell you how many times coworkers etc have said to me..."huh? You have kids?" Then I've had to make up an excuse because I didn't have a photo of my kids on me.

Hey!!! Chicks dig me dood!! I'm a babe-magnet!!!!

I get on better with women than men actually, because, well, my experience in the USofA is men are utter wankers for the most part.....If you aren't well versed in runny-catchy, march madness or the 53 Yankees etc. they just have a blank stare and nothing to say.

Well, I clearly missed a busy day yesterday.

Any girl who's been with me more than once knows that I have "rapey hands" and "molesty hands" but I'm man enough to let her choose which set I will unleash on her on any given night.

There may be a "girl" or two that falls into that category, but I bet there's no women who do.  :P

Yes, American chicks much prefer to chat about soccer and the collected hits of Limahl and Kajagoogoo.

Once on the city paper board (remember that one???) I referred to someone (don't remember who) as a date raping mullet-head.  I suffered the WRATH of the women on that board.  I was completely shocked.  That said, the comment that started this whole thing was miniscule by comparison.   I can't believe we are still talking about it.

Or maybe we are not talking about it anymore.

Lighten up, Francis!

Shit like that only happens on the internet.

If you were in a crowded room of strangers, you wouldn't make that statement for everyone to hear, you wouldn't make an abortion joke, you wouldn't mock someone who had committed suicide earlier in the day, and you wouldn't make Michael Jackson child molestation jokes. At least a normal person wouldn't.

And in real life you were drunk/abnormal enough to actually say one of those things on it and someone said they were offended, the mob wouldn't come rushing to the speaker's defense, and the speaker would be a gentleman and apologize.

But it's the internet. Different rules.

err...you missed the point. I can't help myself. It's human nature to be fascinated by disaster and misery. Why do you think that's all they cover in the mainstream news outlets?

Sweetcell - I had a bedside vigil all night long with a girl who had rusty nails jammed in her eyes. She wasn't my girlfriend or they weren't my nails so I think I am qualified to make such statements.

You were once banned from this board for a Michael Jackson molestation joke on the day he died, were you not?
You have also been known to lob personal attacks at people for things they can't prevent. This one comes to mind:

No, it's your fellow insurance premium payers paying higher rates to support for your crippled ass.

It is not the governments business to protect me from myself or save me from poor financial decision i may make.

You're the last person that should be calling anybody out for his or her insensitivity.

PS - That whole my uncle and the rusty nails to the eyes thing totally cracks me up.

Properly using birth control AND not having intercourse during ovulation seem a better cure for overpopulation than abortion.

The MJ joke was almost two years ago Though Ill stand by my belief that MJ was in many ways a creep, the molestation joke was insensitive, that is true. I believe my temporary board banishment was fair, and I've never made a molestation joke since that day.

Thanks for bringing up the other one. Though I vehemently disagree with Ratbastard's right wing rhetoric, my choice of response was piss poor. I apologize to RB and anybody else who may have taken offense.

Wasn't a newbie and there's no need to rehash that as the person is still a frequent poster.  Move on....

Dulcinea still posts here?

But agreed. That happened during GW Bush's first term in office. That's a long time ago.

In regard to that incident: I've regretted it ever since. Feelings were hurt and (real) friendships were lost because of my stupidity. What I initially said was stupid. It was even more stupid to try to defend my stupidity when someone called me on it. When what I should have done was thought about what I said, how it might hurt someone, and be a gentleman and apologize.

That's all I have to say. As Smackie said, move on.

Holy, crap! Goes to show how long some of us have been around here. Not sure if that is a badge of honor or a mark of shame.
