Title: Official 930 Club Belle and Sebastian Echostage June 11 Show
Post by: hutch on January 13, 2015, 03:40:40 pm
I was surprised to see Belle and Sebastian are playing the Echoplex which is the Capitals practice facility in Ballston... given the magnitude of the show I thought it warranted its own thread..

Anybody planning on going? Is there an opener?

i havent seen them in like forever..seriously...

these days what would the likelihood be of them playing My Wandering Days Are Over? Is that their regular closer (I mean I've got to believe..)...

Is the set list mainly from Tigermilk, IYFS, and TBWTAS?

Also any info on meet and greets would be cool...I just picked up a second copy of their DVD..everyone got that? Its called "For Fans Only"!

I don't believe B&S has a standard "closer". On the last tour it was Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying.

I don't think we have any definitive ideawhat their set is going to be like. With a new album, it'll probably be pretty heavy on that. At Merriweather, summer 2013, which was further from an album release, there was really only 2-3 from IYFS and 4ish from TBWTAS. Don't think anything off Tigermilk got played. I'd expect this tour to be very new album heavy.

To be fair, it will probably be one of, if not the, most boardie attended show of 2015.

That said, it probably does not NEED its own thread.

Note: recording for KCRW (http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/belle-and-sebastian/2015/apogee-studio-santa-monica-ca-5bca833c.html) Morning Becomes Eclectic 1/20/15 -

In a 10-song set that will be broadcast Monday, Feb. 2 on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic," the new tracks from Girls in Peacetime fit comfortably alongside the band's earlier, more folksy material ? even the slinky "Party Line," which Murdoch, looking decidedly un-disco-tastic in a tan jacket and tilted-back fedora, delivers less like a future Disclosure collaborator and more like the droll Scotsman he is, clearly relishing the track's groove but never fully succumbing to it. It's not a full-blown foray into EDM ? more a clever sequel to 2004's "Your Cover's Blown," the band's last trip to the disco (http://www.laweekly.com/music/relax-belle-and-sebastian-fans-they-didnt-make-a-dance-album-5343932).

He also bought us tickets to the Belle and Sebastian show on April 12 in Berkeley, so I will be able to report back before your show.

Seeing them in Chicago in a week...I'm curious to see how the new material sounds live. I tried to go back and listen to the new LP recently. Some of the synths sound like Korean pop music. Not sure I'm digging the approach they took. I prefer B&S with strings and piano/organ. Digital disco isn't always the best approach, yet it seems like everyone is using technology more and more on their LPs with mixed results.

The Riviera show in Chicago (capacity about 3,500) went on sale well over a month ago...maybe 2 months ago...and it still isn't sold out. This show won't sell out that fast.

There is no way in hell the Riv is 3,500 capacity. It's the same size as 9:30.

^^^^ LOL, thanks for that.

I'm not a big fan of the new album. There are certainly some strong tracks, but as an entire album, it's not that great. Then again, I also thought Write About Love was outstanding while many panned it.

Some interesting surprises tonight: Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie, A Century of Fakers, Lazy Line Painter Jane, The Blues are Still Blue....and then of course stuff like The Wrong Girl, the Model, Piazza New York Catcher, I'm a Cuckoo...newer stuff like The Power of Three, Perfect Couples, The Party Line, Nobody's Empire. Sukie, Boy With the Arab Strap, Sleep the Clock Around.

Sadly no songs from IYFS, Write About Love, or Tigermilk.

Stuart was losing his voice and I think they cut the set short a couple songs...it seemed odd that they performed nothing from it. They do have a string section but last night they felt under-utilized.

so looks like they are really doing a wide variety of songs on this tour
Chicago is like the only date that didn't get something off of IYFS

seems like every night you get 1-2 off IYFS, Tigermilk and at least 2 of the EP's from that era

So I'll take 4-6 songs from the golden era and 5 from the new one and be very content

Also, I keep bitching about their output after This Is Just a Modern Rock Song

But I do really like this song I want the world to stop (https://vimeo.com/15869958)
wasn't released as single

Belle and Sebastian co-founder and former member Stuart David (now of Looper) has shared "Paper Boat",  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdVKTU3fWw8)a previously unreleased B&S song written around the same time as 1998's The Boy With the Arab Strap. The song is accompanied by a video directed by longtime B&S collaborator and Looper member Karn David, featuring footage of Stuart Murdoch and the since-departed Isobel Campbell on vacation in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1998

though it wasn't released, it was on the 'black sessions' which was often 'traded' back in the days people traded cassettes of live shows

I don't think they're going to knock anyone's socks off with rare songs being played (i.e. I Love My Car, Beautiful, String Bean Jean, or I'm Waking Up to Us), but the pool of songs they are playing from is very strong. I hope they aren't playing the new lame, full band version of Piazza they've played the last couple times through. Write About Love is a great album and deserves more than just one song a show. And yes, I Want the World to Stop is a great song.

All in all, with their most recent tours, you know what you are going to get, but they're still going to be awesome.

The film itself is fine, it's just that the Kickstarter wasn't exactly a positive experience.  I.e. the original delivery date for it was June 2013.  But due to distribution deals they signed it is now only being sent out. It also means some are now finally getting other perks paid for in Feb 2012. A bonus disc I was supposed to get is now being provided as digital downloads.  Plus, there was a very long silence about the status of the project after the movie was released.

Basically, I won't back any movies on Kickstarter, as final distribution is determined by many forces, much different than say getting an finished album.

I backed another movie and it turns out they needed even more money to secure musical rights before they could release it.

I'll pick up a copy of this. They've been a roll lately, has anyone been checking the setlists? Playing classics from across their catalog and really digging for deep cuts.

I have a bunch of audience bootlegs, so it will be nice to get an "official" copy. The only other official bootleg I have of theirs is the 2006 show at 9:30 after the New Pornographers (I'll share it here if anyone wants a copy). LOVE IT still, though I didn't attend because I didn't live here at the time.

CORRECTION: the 2006 show wasn't official, but was a NPR recording, and was my introduction into the greatness that is NPR's music effort.

I was at that show...it was a good one. I think the date on it is 3/6/2006. I've also got a really good one from Gothenburg in 2004 (I think this was broadcast on the radio), and the show from Belfast as a bonus disc to the BBC Sessions compilation is really great. I love the guy in the audience who is recruited to sing "I'm Waiting for the Man". Also, don't forget on iTunes there's the live version of "If You're Feeling Sinister". I actually listen to it more than the studio version.

I am really impressed with how the band is spreading the wealth song-wise on this tour. They are playing songs across the spectrum. I especially appreciate the Dear Catastrophe Waitress songs being played, those songs like If You Find Yourself Caught in Love are very underrated live.

The set list for the Glasglow show (https://concertlive.co.uk/product.php?id=378) was exactly what I'd like to see in DC (IWtWtS!)

        Nobody's Empire
        I'm a Cuckoo
        The Party Line
        Dirty Dream Number Two
        If She Wants Me
I Want the World to Stop
        Perfect Couples
        Lord Anthony
        If You're Feeling Sinister
        The Power of Three
        Electronic Renaissance
        Dear Catastrophe Waitress
If You Find Yourself Caught in Love
The Boy with the Arab Strap
        Legal Man
        Sleep the Clock Around
Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
        Le Pastie De La Bourgeoisie

Thanks Smackie!

Alright, I'll be the first to chime in.

1) Echostage was INFINITELY more bearable than the Replacements show. Great sound, fewer people and lots more space...but still felt like a pretty full show.

2) The setlist...wow. Other than 1 weak song in the encore and the wrong song to end the show with (that honor should have gone to "Judy and the Dream of Horses"), I'd say it was pretty friggin' awesome.

3) The band really seemed to enjoy themselves. Stuart was funnier and more charming than he's been in a while. I'd say this ranked as the best show I've seen since the Hollywood Bowl in 2006.

Highlights: "Expectations", "I'm Waking Up To Us", "Fox in the Snow" (where even all the chatty Cathys in my area finally shut up and realized that they were witnessing something really special), "My Wandering Days Are Over", "Electronic Renaissance", "Jonathan David", "Dog on Wheels"...and even the newer songs fit in well for some nice variety. I'm so very, very happy and I'm glad that my work schedule allowed me to see this. I would have been so disappointed if I saw that setlist and I hadn't been there.

^^^ Nice review, obviously you are a true fan.

Is there anyone cooler in the world than Stuart? Quite simply one of the most brilliant minds and likable people in music. He's always engaging and always in a great mood. It must be hard to do that EVERY SINGLE NIGHT because it is difficult for me to act like that at ALL. Plus he still writes amazing pop songs. Stuart, and the band, have a lot left in the tank. Stuart seems to like DC, he always makes heartfelt observations about the District.

Band was in great form. I disagree with the criticism of Dear Catastrophe Waitress at the end, I was impressed with how well they played it. It seems like a very difficult song to play and they rarely perform it. Setlist was great overall, the band still comes up with surprises, even if you have seen them live a few times. Their setlists are always varied and diverse. I also noticed they played a lot of old stuff for you whiners at the expense of Write About Love, which I love and didn't have any songs played.

I forget how great and underrated the Life Pursuit songs are. Blues are Still Blue is an all time classic live, they should play it more often. Videos on the high-def screen behind the band were a nice touch too, and a little outside the box for B&S, who usually goes with the more staid backdrops at shows, which are fine too.

Oh and Echostage: Get some god damn A/C. Jesus. It was pretty warm in there early on, I'd hate to see how hot the place gets packed with people dancing their asses off and drinking and taking substances. Plus bottled water was $5. Either get A/C or drop the cost of water.

Place has good views and aesthetics, and I thought the sound was great, but the location stinks. I'd trade venue appearance and cleanliness for better location near Metro and dumpier building. Now does Seth own Echostage, or how does that work? I saw a co-owner mentioned in the "Molly death" the other night.

best show I've seen since the Hollywood Bowl in 2006.

Was that the show with both the Shins and LA Philharmonic? Oh man, I was huge into the Shins at the time, would have been Greatest Show Ever (TM) for me. Plus the orchestra, what could be better?

Apparently if you didn't like the setlist I'm partially to blame...through the magic of social media I threw some requests to Stevie, and he showed the list to Stuart...among them were "I'm Waking Up to Us", "Electronic Renaissance" and "Jonathan David". I should have asked for "I Love My Car"...but there's NO way that'll ever get played live. Too many horns. And thanks for saying I'm a true fan...they're one of my all-time favorites. Don't get me wrong, I love "Dear Catastrophe Waitress", I think I'm just used to seeing them end with something like "Sleep the Clock Around", "Judy" or "Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying" (which I'm sorta over).

That was the one. There's no way I can forget that show. They opened with "Fuck This Shit", then Stuart walked out and started singing "I Fought In A War". When the orchestra started playing I just couldn't believe it. The sound in that place was flawless. The audience stayed seated for most of the show until they played "I'm a Cuckoo". During "Your Cover's Blown" Stuart ran into the audience, and after that it was a free-for-all. People came running down from the nosebleed seats and people were dancing everywhere. It started off like a classical performance and turned into a full-on dance party. And the Shins were good too. Uneven at first, but by the end they really were great. B&S sold out the Bowl.

I want to hear that most as well. There is a youtube video of them playing in Singapore recently. They can do it, I just want to see it myself. I know they like upbeat shows, but it would be nuts to hear them play Beautiful or Put the Book Back on the Shelf.

In a strange train of events, I was able to go and see them for the first time.  Oddly, every time they've been in DC prior I haven't been able to go.

They did not disappoint at all. Fantastic show.

And the sound was pristine. I was concerned it would bounce around that space too much considering the design.

(Thanks Bearman! And Sidehatch lovely to meet you!)

I'm looking at the written setlist and Stuart made the right decision to choose "Expectations" (over "Another Sunny Day") and "I'm Waking Up To Us" (over "Allie" and Sukie in the Graveyard")  ;D

Me and the Major was also on the setlist as the other choice for the set opener but they ended up playing Judy instead. I wish they had settled for Me and the Major but oh well.

Great and highly enjoyable show. DC got the better crowd and dancers than the NYC show the night before. Echostage is fine if you get there early and you're in first 5 rows. Otherwise, forget it.

i havent seen them in like forever..seriously...

these days what would the likelihood be of them playing My Wandering Days Are Over?
So for some reason Hutch turned down a free ticket and door to door service....and they played "My Wandering Days are Over"
Stuart talked a little bit about how that it was the first song he wrote as B&S
He said he penned it in Jan of 96 was joking how some in the front weren't even born then
as he was staring 50 in the face (although he is only 46)

I thought it was a great set list
I would have liked Get me away, Sleep away, Me and the Major or I want the world to stop
but Wandering days, Dog On Wheels and Expectations made up for that in spades

Thought the sound was great
Crowd size was perfect, enough to feel like the place was not empty, but perfect to move around and get up front if you wanted to

Stuart was definitely hamming it up as was Stevie
What was up with that bit about the West Wing?
Stuart Loves Seth...said everytime they come to DC 9:30 hooks them up

AC could have been better
Since the crowd at a B&S show tend to lean female and twee men...sight lines weren't a problem with my towering 5'9" stature...
quite the opposite at the Mats

I can't believe there wasn't even a water fountain!

Also...Parking was a breeze, just go over that little bridge past the club and there was boatloads of street parking.  They were charging $30 in front of the club

Also that 'free shuttle' seems like a joke.  you have to walk down to the McD's and then then I saw at least 50 people waiting close to 1 hour after the show ended (it's only 1.5 miles people!)

All in all a great experience, was more than  happy to grant elite boardie like Bearman a 'miracle ticket'
It was nice to meet him and Lily and hope to see them at future shows

So my echohatin isn't as high anymore, but there is room for improvement

last thought...loved the horn player...his part on Dog on Wheels was a highlight for me

I saw Belle and Sebastian 3 times this week and I don't regret. Each show had 7-10 unique songs. For some reason them seem to never play my favorite songs (Like Dylan in the Movies, Me and the Major, A Century of Fakers -- they did a few times this year), but that's only a minor complaint after watching more than 45 songs this week.

I don't mind one or 2 for variety. I like them in small doses. But when you go from "Perfect Couples" to "Fox in the Snow", you know just how good they're capable of being. I've been seeing them for 17 years and the nice thing is that there are very few songs they're guaranteed to perform. They're good at delving into their repertoire. That's what makes seeing them a couple times per tour worth it.

no credit i'm afraid.. :)

huh? i am really confused.. didn't you email me about how you wanted face value a couple of days ago even though it was selling below face on stubhub and then post about selling it everywhere you could? even below face, presumably rather than give it to me? next time just say i have an extra cause my spouse backed out why don't you take it? i mean you couldn't seriously expect me to give you face value when you tell me its selling below face value on stubhub, right? i'm not going to ask for a freebie if you want money for it...but if you want to invite me to a show particularly belle and sebastian i'm hardly the guy to say no!

i opened an email yesterday at 5 -that you sent at 1130-or so saying you thought you had placed your ticket but a friend of yours had an extra if i wanted it.... by that point there was no way

I wonder how many other cities have a community like the 9:30 BB...truly awesome folks. Sidehatch, you qualify as elite boardie before me for sure. Sure we're elitist snobs, but at least we like good music.

I wonder too. We used to have one in Montreal until around 2006 where quite a lot of local bands also posted but it died due to moving to a new address and trolls. Is there one for London?

Guess we have Kozmo to thank for that!

must say, the girls who got up and danced at the SF show could actually dance and were much hotter than the ones in DC
4.20 on this clip of sukie (https://youtu.be/vazADLsUSiQ?list=PLujkdDYKKNkt2_2obRsOwpnCqb6scGzI_)

I would have written a song about her too....
(that's Sukie for those that just skip to 4:20)

my 2nd time at Echostage.... the sound was shitty at the Replacements gig, and then again for the opener last night, so I was not expecting much, but then as if by magic, it was nice and clear for B&S..... wandered up to the club at about 7:30, half hour after doors opened and was shocked to see long lines still waiting to get in..... a bunch of police cars and some crew with a professional video/movie camera out front.... anyway, there were pretty invasive pat downs before you could get in, which explained why the lines were still there, it was pretty slow going.....I wonder why that was the case at this particular show??  this was my first B&S gig, and probably my last.... like Springsteen, I recognize the talent, musicianship, etc, but for some reason the music just doesn't speak to me at all..... don't know why, it just didn't.....  agree with those that said that it still felt full but a bit more relaxed than the Replacements, was able to maintain a semblance of personal space.... also agree that the A/C wasn't working as well as it had at the Mats gig, it was hot that day too but pretty comfortable inside the club..... last night it was pretty hot....

^^^ I guess this might explain the increased security presence at Echostage on Thursday..... tragic....

Since it?s a pretty special home show for us this Friday, we?ve decided to record the performance for posterity. Therefore we are excited to announce that we?ve teamed up with live music retailers Concert Live to bring you our Glasgow Hydro Arena performance in bespoke, instantly available three disc CD format, complete with original artwork and packaging

FYI, I picked this up and it's really good. I would have preferred the DC setlist, but the stuff with strings on it sounds gorgeous. And they REALLY nail "Dear Catastrophe Waitress"...the horn sounds so darn good. "If You're Feeling Sinister" may be the best live version yet that I've heard. And I know some of you don't care for "Lord Anthony" but I just love the live version of that song. When Stuart puts himself into it, those lyrics are just crushing.

Yes, my buddy ripped me a copy and I agree it's great.  Like most live albums, it sounds terrible on headphones, but is amazing on a big stereo.  Agree with just everything you said.
