in other, more pedantic news: we?re not just playing coachella. we?re playing all over. we?re not just having some reunion tour. we?re releasing a record (sometime this year?still working on it, actually), so this isn?t a victory lap or anything, which wouldn?t be of much interest to us. this is just the bus full of substitute teachers back from their coffee break with new music and the same weird gear?or as much of it as we still have (it?s very interesting to re-buy the same gear, and in some cases buy gear BACK from people you sold it to), and rambling around trying to be louder than everyone else. thank fuck we were never skinny and young. or at least i wasn?t. that always happens with bands? they aren?t fat when they come back, typically, just, i don?t know, thicker. i was lucky to start this band kind of fat and old, so there?s no, like ?look how YOUNG they were!? shit to even find on the internet. i mean, we were younger and everything, but we weren?t young, if you know what i mean.

I will be at this with bells on. The show with Yacht at 9:30 Club in support of the second record was such a fun day.

"not a cash grab" thread
-
I debated posting in the "2016 Albums" thread, but this seemed to be bigger than that.
-
the cash grab was when they said they were done...
-
I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I feel the hipsters, who made this band who they are, have moved on, and their new album will suck.
-
I am so so excited to be at a show where people dance again. This band is so fun and I can't wait.
-
this is what all bands should be doing/.. towards the end of a tour announce they are retiring...massive retirement shows (Madison Square Garden+5 shows at Terminal 5.. crazy ticket prices... retirement DVD etc....then lie as low as you can (a movie soundtrack, some dj work nobody cares about) then wait 3 years and then put out an album and tour again... then announce they are retiring...
-
The Who and the Rolling Stones survived on that for
years decades....

the Stones have NEVER ever retired..
get your facts straight buddy.

Sorry Hutch, but I was in attendance for this show:
...solely because Mick Jagger didn't want to tour again, apparently had his mind changed and rumors were rampant that it was to be the last Rolling Stones Tour ever. I'm quite certain that if my folks didn't believe it to be the last tour, they would not have taken me.

sorry but they never retired... they never even broke up....they have been consistent.. to this day they have never played a final show...
not sure what your parents thought means??? are they mick's butlers or something?

Strangely, "Warped Tour" bands understand this innately.

it was also really, really LOUD.
-
I mean every time you go to a Stones show its because "it could be the last time"... doesn't mean they have ever said they are retiring..
-
same with AC/DC.. they have never said they are retiring..
I like that model.. saying you are retiring and making a big to-do about it is kind of lame.. .doesn't make any difference whether you are the Who or LCD Soundsystem.. same lameness... doesn't even matter if you reform in my book.... just don't frickin' retire and make a big deal about it... at least call it a "hiatus"... I mean how do bands know how they will feel a few years later or how much they will miss the groupies?
-
"It's all just gotten bigger than I planned or wanted. Not that I'm against it but I don't want to get bigger. What's the goal now-- get fucking huge? I don't want to be a famous person. "
so, you know, I'll come out of retirement and we'll play Coachella...
-
He also addressed the fans who "feel betrayed by us coming back and playing," which he said he hadn?t thought about after "clearly" anticipating a more cynical response. "if you cared a lot about our band, and you put a lot of yourself into that moment (or anything about us you chose), and you feel betrayed now, then i completely understand that," he wrote. "to you i have to say: i?m seriously sorry. the only thing we can do now is get back into the studio and finish this record, and make it as fucking good as we can possibly make it."
-
they have been consistent..
From the Wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rolling_Stones_American_Tour_1981) (with a book source):
Initially, lead singer Mick Jagger was not interested in another tour, but guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood were, as were elements of the press and public, and Jagger eventually relented.
Sandford, Christopher (2003). Mick Jagger: Rebel Knight. Omnibus Press. ISBN 0-7119-9833-7. p. 276.
I will agree that they have never retired, but it was high press that this might be the last chance to see the Stones because Jagger was going to go solo. Just the threat is enough for a big act (some said later that it was all an act to make sure they could sell out all of the huge venues - it was the largest grossing tour at the time - but there's been no proof). Then Jagger did go solo, toured by himself and the band didn't comeback to America until 1989, so it looked to be true for a long time. But hey, I was a HUGE beneficiary so no complaints from me that it never panned out.
Now, back to LCD Soundsystem....
-
I feel like they are a band that I should love, but for some reason I only like them.
-
I am retiring from this board...

I am retiring from this board...
Huzzah! Is there a tshirt I can buy to commemorate this?
-
Hey, we're from D.C., right?? Can't we get some Congressional legislation going to ensure that a band/artist needs to be retired (in whatever definition the bipartisan committee can agree upon) for X-number of years before any comeback (again, assuming appropriate defining) can be done?
Make "Farewell Tour" and other designations Federally-controlled!

As long as Ozzy is exempt

This captures how I feel better than the original statement.
Except, I don't really feel like they are a band that I should love. I find them boring, and I find him boring, and their records too. They might be the band that I own the most of, while not liking any of it, because I felt like it was my fault I wasn't getting into it. What a world.

Smackie is the show you are referring to the one at Roundhay park in 82? Because I was also at that Farewell show...

That was the European leg of said tour, yes.
-
I think it's okay for people to change their minds. You could tell at the end of the documentary that he looked so sad! Okay, so maybe they should have said "hiatus" like Sleater-Kinney did, but who cares? Like them, don't like them. That's cool.
-
oh I like their music...was a great show at Virgin Fest! in my top 10 ever.
but I don't think they changed their mind.. I think this was the plan all along...

People un-retire all the time. Not just musicians and sports stars who are making potentially millions. Normal people. My Dad un-retired. Not because he needed money, because he was bored and missed doing what he was doing. I guess if an asshole wants to impugn bad motives to people, there's no way to dissuade them from believing that but there are literally 8 million reasons why James Murphy might have reformed the band. I don't know why. I would be highly suspect of assholes living in poorly kept-up 927 sq ft houses with children who have flies coming off them claiming absolute knowledge of why they are.

You're the one shitting on people you've never met and claiming some sort of absolute credulity over your opinion on why they're doing what they're doing. When you act cool, I treat you cool. Always have. When you're an asshole or a suck up, I treat you like a suck up asshole. Always have. I'm nothing if not completely fair.

Both LCDSS and Sleater-Kinney have retired/gone on hiatus and reunited during Fugazi's hiatus (since 2003). Any others?

Death From Above 1979, Blink-182, Dismemberment Plan.

The hiatus/break-up? that bums me out the most is Comets on Fire. Their records were getting increasingly greater and greater and they put on an outrageous shows and then POOF, they were gone. Miss them so much.

Blur and Jane's Addiction both toured in the early 2000's with replacement members, then fully reunited in the late 2000's
-
Well, Jane's Addiction didn't fully reunite, as Eric Avery (who is the heart of that band) didn't rejoin and they've continued to have a revolving case in that spot since the early 90s. Just sayin'.

not totally true
Avery played in Jane's Addiction initially from the beginning in 1985 to its first end 1991, and rejoined the group in 2008 before departing again in 2010.

Oh, well how about that, I thought he quit in 91 and then never came back. I've learned something today. (that Sidehatch is a JERK)

avery was part of the 2009 NINJA tour.
-
avery was part of the 2009 NINJA tour.
You mean NIN's final tour...before they toured again. Add them to the list!
-
The very first one to burn me was The Who. After the success of the RS tour in 1981, they launched their own massive stadium tour and literally called it the "Farewell Tour" in 1982. I was very sad when the show was over.
So when they came back in 1989 with the Kids Are Alright Tour I was stoked to see them again, but my dad was pissed. So pissed that we didn't go see the performance of Tommy at the Shrine Auditorium. When we watched it on pay per view instead, it was so good that my dad regretted the decision and I learned a valuable lesson about music.
Thus I don't care that LCD Soundsystem said they were done and I'm happy to have the opportunity to see them again. I won't do it at Coachella, but I welcome the chance at a smaller venue. If it doesn't happen, so be it....

Did the clash open for that one?

Ha. I'm actually more pissed about that, but also don't care because Trent Reznor's arms are fine.
-
Yes the Clash were on that 82 Who tour and at least in Detroit also Eddie Money, who decided to play a longer than allotted set, thus cutting The Clash short. I heard they fined him for the offense..
-
Did the clash open for that one?
Yes. One of two times that I had tickets to the Clash and missed them. It was a Friday night and traffic was a mess from Orange County to LA - we arrived late(ish) and at the time I really wasn't that into punk as much as following my folks roots in classic rock. The Clash had already started when we arrived, and we stayed in the parking lot so my parents and their friends could get stoned before we went in. I heard a few songs from the lot, but truthfully, I only knew what the radio played and wasn't pushing to go in - a few months later I would get more heavily into them...
...which leads to the second time I missed the Clash. US Festival, 1983. Yes, I had tickets to Mick Jones last performance with the Clash but we left early. If you couldn't tell by now, I grew up with pretty cool music parents. They went to the 1982 US Festival without us, but took us in 1983. On Saturday, it was all the 80's KROQ bands with the Clash as the headliner. The show is cruising along and we're having fun, then the Clash don't come on. An hour goes by, people start leaving as rumors are circulating that they're not playing. My folks take us back to the camp ground and about 2 hours later they finally come on and we can hear it, but couldn't see it. There was some fight with Wozniak about ticket prices or amount paid or something, but we walked out after waiting an hour. A few months later Mick Jones leaves the band I never got to see them.
The next day I saw Van Halen and the day after that I saw U2 for the first of many times (Bono climbed the rigging during Electric Co and it absolutely blew away 10 year old Smackie) and many other awesome bands, but I failed to realize how much I would regret leaving that Clash show. That 1983 US Festival was a defining moment for Smackie, both good and bad.

If we talked about all the shows we missed, my list would be so so so long...

I definitely look forward to the new album.. concert will depend on venue..I'd see them at Merriweather again...that was one of the best shows I have ever seen...
but that doesn't mean I have to pretend along with him and the lemmings...I also remember the ticket sale fiasco for the "FINAL SHOW EVER!" at Madison Square Garden where all the tickets ended up in the hands of scalpers..I guess you all do not.. or dont' care if a band scalps its own fans while feigning outrage..remember the James Murphy anger at "scalpers" and telling them to "eat shit"...pretty clever when you're the scalper...

I can like a band's music even if I don't think they walk on water..
James Murphy is all about the benjamins.. and this "reunion" was always going to happen...I don't fault him for that because I really don't care.. its just sad that he feels he has to go through this bullshit to retain "artistic integrity" and maximize his money instead of just doing it the way the Stones do it... for the old fashioned professed goal of making the most money possible... nothing wrong with that.
-
All the tickets ended in the hands of scalpers?! Yes, I know there was a huge reselling of tix but there were plenty of us in attendance that absolutely loved the show and paid the normal price tag. I guess I was lucky as were most my friends. We all saw a bunch of their shows at T5 and then saw the final show at MSG. Sure I know there were a ton of fans who were shut out, but everyone from everywhere wanted to be there.
Anyway - I cannot be happier to hear that theyre reforming. I spent a fortune on the above shows but had seen them over the years and they never disappointed. I still remember their show at Webster Hall thinking the floor would fall through to the next level. New Yorkers sure would dance whenever they played.
Its hard to be angry at a band for this. I get it that some fans are devastated, but they don't have to go see them again. I mean enough bands reform for purely cash grabs and only play Coachella... Id rather have a band do a full tour than some one-off show that the odds of going to are slim to none.

well I have turned the page and am looking forward to a great new album....I always thought James Murphy did some great bowie influenced music (and by extension the most important band of the past three decades: Joy Division/New Order) ..there are some songs on the last two LCD albums that sound like they could be from Bowie's Berlin trilogy (high praise) and Murphy's role on Blackstar is cool:
LCD Soundsystem founder James Murphy plays percussion on two tracks, though his role on the album was originally going to be much more significant. "At one point we were talking about three producers for the album: David, James and myself," says Visconti. "[Murphy] was there for a brief time, but he had his own projects to go off to." Adds Guiliana, "His role was never really defined. He brought in some synths and some percussion and had a ton of ideas."
for me 2016 is the year of Bowie.. and because I'm seeing the Cure -FINALLY- the year of Robert Smith... which works out well cause they go together pretty well..

you know what is great about American reality . . . we find out about horrible things like years after they happen, so by then, no one really gives a cat shit covered in litter, and barely even reads the article, or stops long enough to not buy that overpriced ticket to the next farewell show.
