potential of a strong storm friday/saturday. anywhere from 12"-40" with 50-60mph winds
gg
could still be a mixed bag, rain, miss us, etc etc...but many models are starting to show at least a foot of snow or much, much more.
crazy. stock up on the tp now.

I call hype. let the storm call backlash begin...

not going to happen. want to know why; the weathermen said it is going to happen. fuck them. the end.

No, but if you get trapped at your house for any amount of time, you might want to make sure you have some basic supplies ready.

"The storm has potential to produce winter weather but also has the potential to be mostly a rain storm or even a miss to our south though the latter right now seems a long shot. Snow lovers, this is our first legitimate snow threat of the season but still is one that could disappoint."

CWG is the best weather blog around. no need to listen to anyone else other than them (seriously)

we're just too far out at this point..i call bullshit

its already started, out where I live. I went to my local food lion, today at 130 in the afternoon, to grab something for lunch. grilled ham and cheese and double noodle chicken soup with a side of chicken wings, if you must know. the place was packed. packed. they had to call all employees to the front, to open all lines. the place was crazy. people had full carts. people had panic in their eyes. people will be buying all the food, all the products, by the time Friday get here.

I did. Im a pig. But i don't gain weight really, and most people i know, hate me.

I already went to the store and stocked up on good things to eat, thus rendering this "storm" useless.

The problem I have with these weather maps where they put the accumulation totals, especially the maps that hone in on the mid-Atlantic, is that I never know where DC or Fairfax County is exactly on the map.
This one, for example. I know that DC is no the MD/VA border, but where?

its the only thing that makes me gain weight. stupid beer. I can't figure it out. I can eat and eat and be a total pig, since high school, and I stay normal. but if I go a month drinking craft beer, I will gain a belly of fat. ughhh.

Latest from CWG:
D.C. metro area snow probabilities
Chance of at least 1 inch: 90 percent
Chance of at least 4 inches: 75 percent
Chance of at least 8 inches: 65 percent
Chance of at least 12 inches: 50 percent
Chance of at least 20 inches: 15 percent
For amounts of greater than 4 inches, add 10 percent to these probabilities north and west of the Beltway, and subtract about 10 percent east and southeast of the Beltway.

I love it because I get to stay inside, make good food, and drink wine and bourbon (or ramos gin fizzes).
I will go sledding because I two blocks from a park with a kickass hill, but other than that, yes, I am looking forward to boozehounding and not leaving the couch for three days.
-
Who's starting the playlist?
scott walker - winter night
godspeed you! black emperor - storm
red lorry yellow lorry - talk about the weather
wolf eyes - storm cloud
audio bullys - the snow

Friday is a half day for DC public schools, plus I finish a huge project on Thursday, so I'm praying for snow so that I can spend Friday sledding with the kids. We have a secret sledding spot that features huge hills, lots of flat areas, easy access parking, only-slightly-questionable access to bathrooms and no crowds. It's so fun.

There are different meteorological organizations with radars who attempt to track and predict storms. "Euro" is one of the big four.
-
Is that one actually more accurate?
-
Is that one actually more accurate?
I mean, not really. All the big ones get things right sometimes and sometimes not. Its one of the more established (read: correct) models. There is no definitive "always right" one or there wouldn't be multiple models.

I've had plans to be in DC this weekend, and damnit I'm still determined to do so.
I'm looking to come up by either train or by driving on Saturday. Question for you DC folk: for a storm like this, how well are they about paving the interstates/major roads/inner city DC streets? Maybe a dumb question, but I've never been to DC during a time like this.
Also, my understanding is that the metro runs till 3AM on weekends - if that's the case (and please correct me if its not), does the weather have an effect on when the metro operates?

IF.. and a big IF we get a shit load of snow, I'd highly advise against driving up here. Last night the entire city was gridlocked because of a half inch of snow. This place can't handle snow, there will be no where to park, you'll probably get ticketed or towed, etc...

Do yourself a favor and stay home. Here's what the 2010 storm was like:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2015/02/04/snowmageddon-five-years-later-the-first-mid-atlantic-blizzard-of-february-2010/
In regard to Metro:
The D.C. Metro system was hit hard. Above-ground train service was suspended at 11 p.m. Friday. Bus service was stopped at 9 p.m. the same evening, and remained closed through the day Saturday and in ?snow emergency? mode with limited operations through Monday. Some above-ground stations returned to service by Tuesday morning, while other lines (including many Blue Line stations) closed into and past Tuesday with the next storm bearing down.

I took this screenshot last night when there was a whopping half inch of snow on the ground. We all fucked this weekend!
-
was it something about the type of snow??? why did everything fall apart with so little snow?
there have been many times in previous years where it snowed a little and there were no issues...
I think I see Sidehatch's car there..
-
Last night was an anomaly though. No one expected it to snow the way it did. Personally, I find that DC isn't terrible when it's got the plows and salt trucks prepped and ready to go. It's certainly not perfect, but I'm almost always able to bike into work, and I couldn't do that if the streets are clogged. All that said, this probably isn't a great weekend to come to DC unless it's for a specific event.
This morning's ride to work was challenging because the roads were so icy and they hadn't been paved. And the car people were even bigger dicks than usual. >:(

Unpaved roads? Do you live and work in West Virginia?
-
Oh wait, sorry, I meant unplowed. Like your wife hopefully is not, this morning.
-
there was a WWA up hours before the snow, it was expected. For some unknown reason, they did not treat the roads. Untreated VERY COLD roads made very slippery conditions.

I don't know what planet you live on but Mayor Bow Wow and DC didn't do a god damn thing to prepare for the snow. Didn't see any streets paved in my 'hood, which includes the 3600-3900 blocks of 14 and 13 NW. Complete ice.
-
No one expected it to snow the way it did.
Again, what planet do you live on? Everyone knew it was going to snow last night.
-
Is Sidehatch accounted for???
snowpocalypse -1.sidehatch -0.
got in a fender bender (wasn't too bad, but my insurance rates will surely go up to pay for his bumper)
I saw at least 25 accidents last night in N. Arlington, maybe more
almost 10 car pile up at Lee and G. Mason
they cleared it and then there were at least 8 more
was pure pandemonium on the roads
ambulances were in ditchs, four wheel vehicles sliding all over the place
I eventually parked at Cowboy Café and started drinking and slept at a friends house as by 10PM nothing was any better
this morning there were cars on the side of the road every where too
-

she is fake and only the top half :(

I am debating if it is worth it to drive from my house (near Annapolis/Bowie) to my office (near the mall) to pick up a piece of equipment to use for some testing tomorrow while working from home...
The road map looks mostly okay on my route right now.
-

that was it...it was below freezing for a week...so the ground was really cold
they thought it was going to just dust and got about 1 inch, which quickly turned to ice as the cars drove over it
What annoyed me is by 10pm they still weren't treating the roads (at least not in Arlington)
that would have made a BIG difference
-

yes, but they really were only predicting a dusting, not 1 inch

roads are 100% fine now and until tomorrow afternoon
only places it might be bad is where there is a lot of tree cover so the sun isn't warming the roads up

I think last night's jam was because of a Zamboni-like effect of traffic on lightly falling snow on frozen pavement. The weight of cars and the friction of tires crushed and slightly melted the snow, which then froze into a light glaze of ice. Heavier snow would have overcome the effect and allowed for some traction, or warmer pavement would have left the snow melted.
-
Saw a van spin out right at the intersection of 9th and U. Thought he was going to plow right into the Warby Parker or whatever. He spun onto U as safely as he could though. Then I almost fell crossing the street. Can't believe I didn't come across a single treated street. Let alone any of the sidewalks. Almost completely iced over.

So who here has been given the option tomorrow to telework, and if so are you taking it?
I have been offered, but it doesn't look like it's going to start snowing until 5 or 6pm tomorrow, so don't really see the point. I figure I'll probably end up snowed in for at least the start of next week, might as well come in when I can.

Snowed in King of the Hill sex binges are nice, but I don't know how many days in a row my cock can take that as it's likely the telework option will extend into next week, and the kids probably won't go back to school until February. It might be nice to have one more day out of the house at the office, with the quiet office (and work gym) all to myself.

I have been offered, but it doesn't look like it's going to start snowing until 5 or 6pm tomorrow, so don't really see the point. I figure I'll probably end up snowed in for at least the start of next week, might as well come in when I can.
Given the option to work from home, why wouldn't you take it?
because he's going to be required to screw his wife during a 8 hour king of the hill binge
But can you drink Breakfast Stout at 11am in your office??? I think not!
I think if you put it in a coffee mug...could probably get away with it
Space can't take booze onsite to his office if memory serves me.

Trying to figure out if I can make it home by 6 and then hit the metro and head to the city to stay with a friend all weekend.... Metro shut down early last night just for a frickin dusting of snow.

Let me rephrase: they were online at some point, supposedly. And posted by a Texas Tech football player, also supposedly. She was fired over this, for sure. I am sure the photos exist somewhere out there, but I have not went beyond a non-Safe Search Google image search looking for them. Go forth and. . . conquer or something.

Are you telling me the x-ray machines I go through each day just detect the glass bottle that would contain the beer, and not the beer itself? Geez, this could be a revolutionary revealation.

Metro is closing Saturday and Sunday.
"Metrorail will operate from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, then will close and remain closed Saturday and Sunday, Metro General Manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld said. Metrobus service will end at 5 p.m. Friday and remain suspended all day Saturday and Sunday."

But seriously, this says the xray thingy can detect alcohol.
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20151002074229AAJRytQ
To be fair, that says xray machines can determine there's liquid and they will then open and inspect the liquid, not that an xray machine is actually able to determine if a liquid is alcoholic or not via a scan.

bring stout, preferably from Founders (smaller, round bottles). remove label (can be soaked off, OxyClean or other detergent will help). use magic marker to black out some or all of the cap. pack inside a bag with your lunch. when asked, claim that it's root beer. profit.

One time I DID bring root beer with my lunch and the xray machine caught it (the glass bottle, I assume?). I tried explaining the difference between root beer and beer to the guard but he wasn't buying it. Apparently, they hadn't explained the difference to him in his African country of origin. Thankfully, his more Americanized colleague was observing what was happening and stepped in to explain that root beer was nonalcoholic.
True story.

I just did my Saturday nine mile run 24 hours early.

why, yes . . . heading for the second one soon. still snowing good. we think, we got about 30-32 inches here, out in the woods of white stillness. some guy in our neighborhood is flying around on his four wheeler with a front blade. look at him go. he done did, our driveway and most of the gravel road I live on. nice.

I live between BWI and Annapolis, so looks like about 27 inches here...
http://www.capitalgazette.com/blogs/weather/cgnews-snowstorm-building-blizzard-and-high-wind-warnings-issued-20160122-story.html
Officials of the National Weather Service confirmed Saturday night that the storm had deposited 29.2 inches at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport ? making it the worst winter storm on record for the Baltimore area.
By 6:30 the city had at least 24 inches of snow, Wardlaw said.
Officials will decide on Sunday whether county and city government offices will open Monday.

Apparently they screwed up the measuring at DCA. Time for a redo.

18 inches here in SW DC. I had to measure over the span of a couple of blocks and multiple times due to snow drifts.

bets on how long schools will be closed
I'm saying Wed. But have heard we might get an inch on Tuesday...so that could throw my estimate off
-
Ugh - really? I thought Tuesday was gonna be 40+ and rain.
As far as schools go I'm curious what the universities will do since many students are stuck at home (many out of state).
As far as work goes.....I hope the Feds are either closed or allow unscheduled telework as my company follows their lead.

Sometime after Wed. for Fairfax County. After Wednesday they will have enough snow days in the bank to be able to apply for the state waiver to start school a week early next year.

MoCo schools are closed today and tomorrow.
i spent the blizzard in NYC with the family. we had a nice hotel with a decent beer bar that stayed open throughout (had my fill of delirium tremens, lagunitas IPA and two roads honeyspot white ipa - all on draft). spent all day saturday running around a grade school with my toddlers - with so many toys, there was no way to NOT have a blast. made it home yesterday on only the second Amtrak to leave NYC, after dozens had been cancelled. by dumb luck we had tickets for that exact train. several hundreds trying to get on it. penn station was a mess. took me and the missus a little over an hour to dig out the driveway and get the car off the street. working from home today. the end.
-
Arlington schools just called it...no school until Thursday!

WTF is up with the USPS?
I got my newspaper delivered to me today by someone who probably makes far less money than my mail carrier. But no mail deivery.

It also sucks ass that OPM is potentially waiting until 10pm to announce a decision regarding tomorrow. We've got plans for different possible scenarios, but I can imagine some parents needing more time to make child care arrangements if they're required to go to work tomorrow. What do they gain by delaying their decision?

nice to see Arlington schools closed until at least Thursday but arguing they don't have to make up the days... some weird stat called "instructional hours".. they say they will meet that so they are off the hook.. nice to be a teacher and get a FIVE days off and not have to make them up.. in Arlington they got Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday and will get at least Wed...
I love Arlington and its school system has been pretty good to my family but they are a bunch of sorry-asses when it comes to snow.
it was funny watching Tapper on CNN talking to the head of DC Emergency Services or some such .. I paraphrase "why the fuck is NYC operating at 100% with full metro transit, schools and everything while DC is closed.. I didn't see any snow plows either".. DC bureaucrat: "uuugghh.. we're totally different systems.. uggghh...dont' ask me"... Tapper should have said 'Ugh isn't New York's subway system 150 years old and yours like 40??" instead he said "Did you have enough resources in place? Did you have all you needed?" DC Bureaucrat "Ehhhh...ughh" deer in headlights

yeah, its a cakewalk to get FIVE days off your job in one week and not have to make them up.. what else do you call it??
I have no problem with days off and being a teacher is as important as tough a job as there is.... but you have to make up snow days at the end.. sorry... 180-190 days of school a year for a kid is not that much.
perhaps I could have directed my post more at APS in general and not teachers per se.. .but fuck yeah it must be nice for them..

Small concession for low pay, hard work, lots of college loans and being despised not only by the kids you teach but by most republicans as well

Literally no one I know who just got a snowday (myself included) is expected to "make them up." You think I'm coming in on Saturday this week?

Hey at least it is 50 degrees! 8)

low pay is relative.. sorry man.. when you get 3-4 months off at a minimum every year due to winter break/summer vacation and you calculate income per days worked.. it ain't exactly minimum wage..... you might be surprised .. they might be making more than you on a per day worked basis.
but ok fine.. being a teacher is so horrible.. they make no money...everybody hates them (seriously? I hate my kids teachers? who the fuck hates the teachers that teach their kids? I think most people value them more than their extended family members. ..even Republicans..i know i do.. i know i'm fucking counting on them for all my life is worth....the money we shell out every year on gift cards... multiply that by the entire class....come on now.its ok if they don't work because there is some snow.. WTF? I could easily have gotten my kids to school today but I guess no teacher could make it? give me a break.
lets teach kids the value of NO WORK. yeah, that's the ticket.
btw in NYC it snowed more than in DC in ONE DAY with no preparation because snow was not forecast to be that bad for the area and guess what.. schools were open on Monday.. but hey.

During the summer, many teachers are required to take classes, and many are required to earn at least a masters degree before getting a promotion/raise.
-
and Sidehatch, did everyone hate your parents? I bet they got a ton of pleasure and a big sense of achievement out of teaching kids and last time I checked your parents seemed to be doing allright..Didn't they retire when they were like 45? seems like it was just around when I met you 20 years ago or something!
This idea that teachers are hated and not respected is a myth. Iit is the teacher's union or organization that IS hated by Republicans and I don't know the ins and outs of that one but that is different from individual teachers) And while it may be true that teachers in less affluent areas get a raw deal it also can't be denied that teachers in places like Arlington, Falls Church and Montgomery County are doing pretty fine for themselves..or do you think our friends Enrique and Kristin are doing that terrible??? Seriously?

god the horror.. a Masters... a Masters these days is like toilet paper: necessary but pretty basic stuff.

Oh, I very well could roll thru Wednesday with weather-related days off if I wanted.

Yes, I got my Netflix dvd, thanks for asking.
If I had to pick one, Netflix dvd or Netflix streaming, it would be dvd in a heartbeat. Streaming options are so limited, and Netflix dvd option is still so cheap, as long as you watch the disk the day you get it and send back the next day.
I used to be a teacher, but i think I'm better in my current career. You really have to have a talent for it to be a good teacher. I didn't. We did'nt love our daughter's kindergarten teacher, but the past three have been pleasantly excellent. I have no beef with teachers, they earn every dollar they make, and dexerve a little bit more.
And I just had a damn good flight of beers at Whole Foods for $8.
DC Brau Alpha Domina Mellis
Firestone Walker Double Jack
Lickinghole Creek Heir Apparent
Bruery Gypsy Tart
Tomorrow, I'm working No matter what.

my work was open today :/
although i only live a mile from it (and walk) so in reality bad weather can't stop me. although it wasn't great having to walk in the street.
the president said we were open....then a few hours later the dean sent a message saying our school would be closed, students and staff don't have to report.....then a few hours after that (after i had started drinking) a "corrected" message was sent saying classes are cancelled but staff have to report. so on top of having to go after thinking we were off...i have a hangover (burns night)
i'm guessing the president got pissed

Fairfax County just bagged it for the rest of the week.
At weeks end, they will have had 11 days of school in the last seven calendar weeks. And one of them was an early dismissal day.

we are fine out here in the woods. I was able to go buy some beer, and food, today. got to work too. yeah, great . . . because napping 4 to 5 hours a day, gaining 10 pounds, jerking off on command, was so horrible.

ha ha walkie...
I went out today with the kids.. I took them to Barnes and Noble.. man they love that place.. makes me happy....I love bookstores particularly with record stores in them.....I bought them some educational materials (my older boy a getting ready for the 4th grade workbook... he's in kindergarten but is obsessed with these workbooks... I just love making him happy.. too bad we have 250 of these workbooks lying around, and for the young boy I bought him a coloring book for girls cause that is what he wanted) and the Iron Maiden LP for myself...YAH! so I was happy.. then I took them to an undisclosable location for lunch...it was packed...jam packed with kids...
People on the streets were driving like total assholes... really put me off the whole thing...you would think the snow everywhere would bring out the best in people but no...I want to say it was Fairfax assholes but I dunno...usually they would be Maryland assholes but I don't think with the snow conditions they came all the way over to fuck with me....could have been some Arlingtonians.. wtf? are these people not brought up on "the Arlington Way"? I went to a thrift store and picked up 15 cds and some more stuff for my kids...a construction construction site matching game (if you're a parent you probably know the book) and a few other items...so I was happy....then I took them to safeway and the lines were way long and all I could find I wanted was a head of broccoli and box of cheerios so I said fuggit and came home.. they were out of milk.. it looked like that crazy looney tunes maniac had been there....then I got home and realized the construction construction matching game was missing 4 out of the 72 cards.. frickin' thrift stores...anyways, it don't matter .. my kids never play those matching games.. oh my older boy wanted a "batter up" baseball frame art thing of some sort.. I thought that was weird but I bought that too.. now someone will have to figure out how to put it up.. I am basically illiterate when it comes to putting shit up on walls...the end. dont' you wish you had that minute back.

is Betao still in transit?
Hah, negative. I didn't come up. I decided Thursday that there was no logistical way to make this happen, and I'm glad I did. Otherwise, I probably would still be in transit.
We got between 12'' - 15'' in Richmond, and the kids are finally back in school today.

Church Hill parking was Thunderdome. There were no rules. All common decency went completely out the window.

Everybody enjoying the warm weekend weather?
Apparently it's not warm enough, as Fairfax County Schools will have a two hour delayed start tomorrow.

I'm hoping you did this when the snow was actually snow and you didn't let it sit there a week.

Sorry Walky, talking about snowfall here.
