Title: The Pokemon Go thread
Post by: sweetcell on July 13, 2016, 03:29:41 pm
apparently this damn game is taking over the world, and has even made a fan outta julian, so i assume it deserves its own thread.

and now the club is getting in on the action... apparently it's a "gym" (i'm vaguely aware of the concept, but not being a player i'm not completely clean on how this will improve my live music experiences...)

any PoGo'ers here?

sadly was reviewing it for my kids to install and now I'm a user
took me a while to figure out how to actually catch one of the suckers
but I got some peach colored dragon and haven't been to a gym yet
DFA and Kilsal are going hard core from what I can tell

it's crazy how fast this thing exploded

If this saves the Comic Books and Other Nerdy Topics thread, then this thread is a good move.

If it doesn't, you're the asshole, sweetcell.

Yes but I'm staying true to Ingress, where the "adults" play.  It is fun catching Pokemons from public transport...

Fan is a bit of an overstatement. I like that its getting fattyboombalatties moving, but I'm not about to play this crap.

While I don't play it, and likely never will as I'm 42, my wife is 36 (ie, we both missed the pokemon window growing up) and don't have children, I am fascinated by the user numbers and have been following them closely.

More daily users than twitter.
People spend more time playing pokemon then on Facebook (mobile) by a third
Higher Peak Daily Users than Candy Crush (which I also avoided)

And if you think the US is crazy about it, you should see the Australia and New Zealand numbers.

https://techcrunch.com/2016/07/13/pokemon-go-tops-twitters-daily-users-sees-more-engagement-than-facebook/

That's all crazy impressive stuff right there and like Kosmo I am super happy for the Niantic guys.

Yeah, it also freezes up for me when I hit some pokestops or when I try to transfer some of my Pokémon to the professor or whatever. Other than that it's not so bad and it doesn't happen often enough to keep me off.

I ran into a Meowth last night when I was waiting at the pharmacy, but as I walked around it kept popping on and off of my radar, which was super annoying. I also went to a "friendly" [Valor, duh] gym and "trained". Battling is weird. Got XP and won my first one though!

For all the big talk about how Valor is the best team, I seem to run in to way more Instinct and Mystic gyms... Either way, it's fun to play a game while walking around the city instead of scrolling through social media reading about politics and racism for a change.

One complaint I have is that you have to keep the game open in order for it to track how much you walk to hatch your eggs. I got a 10km egg and it's gonna take me forever to hatch it because I have to keep the app open and it just eats your battery!

Oh man I'd get yelled at if I did that hahaha

I wonder how it calibrates, it must shut off at a certain speed. I've had it open in my car to see if it works and it won't calculate the whole trip, but when I slow down it definitely calculates some. When I'm sitting in traffic I'll just pop it open to cheat a little lol. Got a Psyduck out of one and a Clefairy.

HAHAH!

My buddy is a cop and he usually has to drive around slowly and walk around on patrol on his night shift and he says he's caught tons of people in parks after dark or just driving slowly down the street looking for Pokémon related stuff lmao.

I'm surprised they haven't put some kind of curfew into the game, to keep people from playing all hours.  And a lot of public parks have hours anyways.  And I clearly do not understand the gym thing, because I went up against someone I was sure I'd beat and not so much..

The gym stuff I had to look up before I tried it. I was confused because I went to a friendly gym and still had all of my Pokémon's hit points taken down and I had to use my potion. Maybe I did something wrong? Not sure lol. I thought you could go "train" at a friendly gym and have it not effect your Pokémon and have it not effect them but I guess I was wrong.

My plans feel through tonight so I will be hitting the streets to find some new poke mans!

Was out in old town Manassas Park yesterday after work and there were groups of people EVERYWHERE. There are 2 "gyms" at the Manassas Museum and there must have been 50 people sitting in the park playing the game. Groups were going all over the place "tracking" Pokémon. Families, kids, adults, the elderly. It was insane.

Wasted so many poke balls yesterday. Went out and the servers were down. Then went out later in the day and literally EVERYTHING I tried to catch would break out of the balls. I lost an Abra and 2 Vulpix. So pissed. I used razberries and great balls and still stuff kept breaking out. Even Weedle's with single digit CP were breaking out. I was confused and very angry lol.

I made it to Level 15 though!

I wonder if one's level has any bearing on them busting out again.  The frequency definitely seemed to increase above a certain level.  I'm at 10 now... I also inadvertently used a magic egg today without any poke balls :(  luckily I was able to evolve at least one to get double xp... Seriously considered spending money but came to my senses
Title: Re: The Pokemon Go thread
Post by: DeathFromAbove1979 on July 18, 2016, 03:27:08 pm
I spent $2 over the weekend on poke balls because I was trying to catch pokes I didn't have. They have to be getting tougher the higher level you are. I have to use razberries, great balls, and hit the circle when it's small to catch anything with a couple hundred CP now. And the 3 foot print tracking is maddening. I hope they fix that. I walked around looking for an Abra and it kept bouncing around my radar or disappearing.

Canadians!

I heard a good tip about using Lucky Eggs.. Right before you level up, line up a bunch of Pokemon to evolve.  Then use the lucky egg to get the double xp on all the Pokemon evolving up. I believe the xp for an evolve is 500 which is then doubled.

Yeah, I've been holding onto my lucky jams. I'm a ways away from level 16 but I haven't been out much because Sunday the servers kept going down and yesterday it was raining. Gonna try and get out today!

Also, I think the most effective way to use the "lures" is to set up 2 close to each other. Any time I've set just 1 up I don't get much, but whenever there have been 2 that are relatively close I've caught crazy stuff.

poke radar (http://www.pokemonradargo.com/)

From what I can tell the apps rely on the reports of other users, so most of them are pretty useless at this point.  This website is supposedly the best, although based on watching I'm sure how entirely accurate it is.  although it certainly would explain why i rarely see pokemon near the pokestops minute from my abode...

of course this whole when pokemon occur really has me confused, they most only appear when there people in the area or where people wander often because i occasionally get pokemon well away from pokestops.  but it's most confusing seeing pokemon's popping up along the highway while kosmette was driving along i-95, which makes no sense because in theory pokemon would only be seen in areas considered walkable.. oh well

Yesterday I was confused because almost none of the Pokes on my radar were popping up, instead it was random stuff NOT on my radar. This was without incense or anything on. I also saw a Cubone on my radar and was insanely excited but as I walked around it kept jumping from the top of my radar to the bottom and I couldn't hone in on it's location. I was pretty bummed out. First time that one popped up on my radar.

Well I had just had my best session of Pokemon, courtesy several lures placed around the Hirschhorn, got over 60 Pokemon and very few of them common, including a Tauros.  In rapidly closing in level 22.  Now it will be interesting to see how  this new tracking feature will work, although I known I'm going to get annoyed with having to tell the game I'm a passenger.

You're a level 22 and just got a Tauros? Dang. That was one of the first ones I got. I caught a Blastoise in Dupont the other night.

As for the new tracking feature, how exactly does it work? I walked around and the grass didn't seem to move or change.... I didn't open up the google play store to see what the new features were though.

I also noticed there aren't any Pokemon on the metro rail platforms anymore, it always seemed at least one would appear when the game first started, oh well

I haven't played in weeks [I've gotten sucked into another game] but I got a push notification from the game. Weird. I never got one before from the game.

well now until Halloween is the time to jump back in... double candy when capturing pokemon + shorter distances to earn candy  and  it's spawning all kinds of rarer pokemon, so i've been capturing lots of different ones, got three new ones today alone..

I want to say really?  as in, really, queen, this is still a game?  but I don't judge.  I just don't hear any, body talking about this, playing it, or a peep about it in the media anymore.  my nephew in laws; did I just say that; won't even touch it anymore, and you know how entitled spoiled kids who have everything are.

but what do I know . . . I think hand it over and without a sound, are incredible dinosaur jr albums.
