My high school librarian was nicknamed "Caribou." Though in hindsight, that was sort of an insult to the animal...

although I'm a little more interested now...kinda a dark topic to take on
The Detroit rapper's new music video for “Darkness,” one of the album's 20 tracks, depicts a shooting at a concert. The lyrics and storyline of the video specifically allude to the 2017 mass shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. It closes with audio and video footage of news broadcasts from other recent mass shooting around the U.S. and an appeal to register to vote.

Calibro 35 - Momentum
Everyone’s favorite Italian Cinematic Funk Band is back with a little more adventurous/experimental sound. Is post funk a thing?
-
-The Chats - Australian "shed-rock" band - Played DC last summer-playing Fillmore SS in May- Smoko is their break-out single from last year or so
-The Wants - side band of members of Bodega. Bodega is a Brooklyn band that sound somewhat like Parquet Courts. The Wants have a new wave-dance band vibe. They are both playing at DC9 in March-late show.
-Shame- "post-punk" band from London; played Black Cat earlier in the year. Awesome in concert; great 1st album- Songs of Praise
The Chats due in March 2020
The Wants 1st album in March 2020
New Shame album should be coming in 2020

New Cornershop due March 6th called England is a Garden
Second single from the album 'St Marie Under Canon' is an addictive ear worm - over that glam stomping rhythm sits some Stax style Hammond melodies...

Was surprised to hear that Trail of Dead released their first album in a long while back on the 17th.

Drive By Truckers - The Unraveling

Too Free - Love In High Demand
https://toofree.bandcamp.com/
New project from a forum alumni, the bandcamp page does a better job of describing the sound then I could . But, it sounds great in the car and that’s all that really matters in the end...

The new Cornershop album is brilliant! I’m digging it’s glam rock stompers, 60s psychedelic keyboards and flute jams.
Think my favorite track is Everywhere That Wog Army Roam due to its Jimmy Cliff\Harder they come vibe.
And don’t expect a US tour as they aren’t even touring the UK anymore...

Fully agree. Cornershop is very high on my “bands I never got to see list.” People who only know Brimful of Asha are missing out.
-
I heard from more than one source that Tejinder was a complete jerk when they toured around 2000
Nevertheless I was excited about finally seeing them
(https://i.ibb.co/Zd0gxdP/D73-E3-D4-F-B0-F7-403-C-90-C7-547-D3470-AAF0.jpg) (https://ibb.co/xhNg6h0)
But they cancelled...I don’t know if it was trouble getting a Visa or low sales...
I snagged this poster from the club
-
Looks like one of those upside down misprints.
-
Hey flip your monitor dude! You are lucky I was even able to take and post pic
-
I still listen to When I Was Born for the 7th Time on a regular basis
the song that always gets me is 'its good to be back on the road back home again'
I remember catching them back in the 90s at the club and loving the show, but at the time wasn't a huge fan
in the last decade, I keep going back
I really wish they'd tour
-
The Clinton album should have been released as a Cornershop record and the Handcream record could have come out a bit earlier...there was just a huge loss of momentum after the I was born for the album....like a virtual textbook case on how to kill a career...
I love Handcream the most of their records but feel like hardly anyone gave it a chance because of the huge amount of time from Brimful of Asha era
A couple of years ago I found a cd of the Clinton record for $1...signed by Tjinder!!
-
New Cornershop aside there are a bunch of new releases of interest today.. seems Feb was a bit slow in terms of new stuff I’m was interested in..
Anyways..
Listening to the new James Hunter Six Nick Of Time out on Daptone records. He does retro soul so well!
Also of interest new Body Count and Paul Heaton\Jacqui Abbott
-
Woman's Gotta Have It is such an underrated gem.
-

I also love Handcream. They were great at the club on the Handcream tour, starting and closing the show with Heavy Soup. I also saw them at the University of London Union in March 1998 with Les Rythmes Digitales opening up. I was surprised at the time it did not sell out right away. Although, they played two nights in a row there. Oh to be that young again.

Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton Shares First-Ever Solo Song ‘Infinite Everywhere’
Debut solo album of the same name is out June 19
After 25 years, Eric Hilton will be releasing his first solo album.
Titled "Infinite Everywhere", the Thievery Corporation co-founder has been known as half of the duo behind lounge-friendly beats, but this record will showcase his vast skills as a multi-instrumentalist.

I like what I've heard so far.

It’s hip hop rap?
I know a lot of people really into them
Some drove to philly to see them
Did they open for Lorde at Anthem?

not being into hip hop is fine, it's personal taste... what i was giving you a ribbing about was your use of "hip hop rap" ;D
-
It still cracks me up how many of us were at that Lorde/RTJ show. Serious music board! ;D
-
i don't get your comment - RTJ isn't serious?

i don't get your comment - RTJ isn't serious?
I mean, Lorde is the funnier part of the equation for sure.

Probably should go in the re-issue thread, but not fussed to find it at the moment...
Love me some Prince but the latest re-issue for Sign Of The Times is 8 CDs + 1 DVD going for $160 :o.... I'm sure the book that's coming with is probably spectacular, which they would release it standalone... Not sure I need to own three CDs full of unreleased tracks
-
Yeah as much as I like prince and that period I think $50 would be Max I would pay
Box sets kind of just sit there...very few do more
-
The vinyl version for that SOTT release is $300 and they are doing a 7" single collection for a mere $100
and yeah my interest in boxsets is waning would probably only listen to those tracks only a couple times and will be able to do that via a streaming service when it comes out.
-
So the new Cee-Lo Green album CeeLo Green Is Thomas Callaway is shaping up to be a keeper.. Clearly Dan Auerbach has mastered a very specific sound which is both retro and modern at the same time. This record has similarities to the Yola record from last year, hints of country and soul effortlessly blended together. And as I suspected several Muscle Shoals sessions musicians are on this record.
-
New Semisonic track out today indicates a nice return to form for them
and since I'm on a roll new BLACKPINK track is MEH... serious retread of their past tracks
-
almost forgot The Suffers have a new scorcher out this week as well..

We are halfway through year!
What are your favorites so far?
I got the Cornershop, Jessie Ware and Strokes
-
I second Cornershop
technically not out yet (about 4 singles have been released)
Down in the Weeds Where the World Once Was - Bright eyes (August 21st)
Rina Sawayama - Sawayama
other than that, not heard much new stuff I like. would love to hear some suggestions (giving strokes and Jessie another try)
-
Cornershop is up there but the Fiona Apple and Pheobe Bridgers albums are so good I don’t know how there’s time to discuss anything else.
The majority of the good music getting made today is by women . . . for about the 7th year in a row.
-
Fiona Apple and Pheobe Bridgers
I did like the FA album and really is out there, but I had a hard time with repeat listens
Not sure why I haven't given the PB album a spin...but that's next
-
I will probably buy the Phoebe Bridgers
Fiona Apple was just never my thing...just cause every critic is taking turns to praise it doesn’t mean I will even try
I used to find her really annoying
-

I was never on the FA train until this record hit me like a ton of bricks.
Punisher is just so fucking good I can’t believe it exists.
-
Geez Punisher on LP is back ordered for months!
I hear you about Fiona Apple....maybe I will get the cd
I am also interested in Yves Tumor
-
New Shpongle out now.
-
New Tricky out September...
-
New Shpongle out now.
technically it's a solo release by simon, it doesn't fit in with any of his projects (shpongle = techno-worldbeat with raja ram, hallucinogen = his solo dance stuff, younger brother = experimental stuff with benji vaugh, etc.)
</information you didn't need nor care about>

I know!
Love the cover
-
New Tricky out September...
I'm always excited for a new Tricky album, even if so many of them are flops. I still sort of regret picking the Foo Fighters soft opening at anthem over Tricky at U street.
-
I thought that Tricky show was cancelled? Was that the one before?
I think Tricky’s albums continue to be incredible
His last one for example is really good...just listened to it two nights ago and loved it..so is False Idols...not sure what people want or expect?
Which are the flops in your opinion
I haven’t heard Skilled Mechanics but don’t really consider it a Tricky album
-

I haven’t heard Skilled Mechanics but don’t really consider it a Tricky album
It was the one before that where he had visa problems. Only time I actually got to see Tricky live he walked out after 5 songs because it wasn't dark enough.
Flop was maybe too strong a word, but I don't think I've loved any of his albums since Angels with Dirty Faces. Knowle West Boy, ununiform, Mixed Race, were all ok for me but I don't listen to them on repeat like I do the first three and Nearly God. And admittedly, I think Maxinquaye is my favorite of the trip hop albums so it's pretty hard to keep that standard up.
-
Wow you should listen some more!
False Idols is fantastic...better than anything after the first three
I feel like he can’t win...people only seem to have room for so much Tricky
I love the Doll Parts cover on the last one but turn out the lights, play it late at night when you are by yourself and tell me the whole thing isn’t great
Anyways just my own opinion
-
I saw Tricky in 1998 - he did not face the crowd at all....it wasn't really a good gig.
-
I was there but can’t remember a thing..only reason I know is cause I have the ticket stub
Honestly I was shocked to find the stub a few years ago ..cause I thought I had never seen him
But I remember being kind of obsessed with Tricky around then
-
besides the Cornershop other 2020 records I'm enjoying are
Too Free - Love In High Demand
James Hunter Six - Nick Of Time
Don Bryant - You Make Me Feel
Cee-Lo Green is Thomas Calloway
Paul Heaton \ Jacqui Abbott - Manchester Calling
Will surely be spending more time with the new Weller and Bad Moves
-
The Beach Bunny LP was also super great.
-
I got my Cornershop about a week ago
I got to say a 48 minute record on two LPs is most unfortunate... they should have trimmed the last song a few minutes and stuck it on one platter or added at least three songs and kept it a double...or just stuck the whole thing on one LP..not ideal sonically but wouldn’t suffer that much! It’s been done many times..When I listen to an album I don’t want to get up every ten minutes to turn it over!
Otherwise great...not only did Tjinder sign a card but he even signed the cardboard flat to protect the record (I almost threw it out or reused it)
People say order from artists and in this case I had to do that but I paid $10 more and it took three weeks to get it (Amazon would have been three days)
Tjinder has an amazing streak going..not that many artists can put out five records in a row I dearly love even if it’s been 23 years
When I was born for the 7th time
The Clinton record
Handcream
Judy
This new one
-
Do you not like Woman’s Gotta Have It? That’s LP is amazing.
-
I like it a lot..just haven’t listened to as much...am going to listen to it again...
I also like the Bubbley Kaur a lot
-
I've ok course had completely spaced on Brendan Benson's new album...
other stuff keeping me entertained is El Michels Affair - Adult Themes, The Haggis Horns - Stand Up For Love, The Vapors - Together
-
I've ok course had completely spaced on Brendan Benson's new album...
He's British, right?
-
I seem to recall the famous early 90s britpop star Brendan Benson...
-
I've ok course had completely spaced on Brendan Benson's new album...
He's British, right?
Yup and moved to South Detroit to follow his musical dreams...
and i have added the Jessie Ware and Beach Bunny albums to my listening queue.

The headline is clearly “Taylor Swifts FANS doxxed,” not her. If anything, this is a reminder to not cross me.

Giving the new Psychedelic Furs album a whirl... Sounding like vintage P Furs so far so good
-
Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my 8th studio album, folklore; an entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into.
I like Taylor as much as the next white person but good Lord, that unintentionally reads as a threat.

i was checking that out last night and what's so silly about this is
a. The 8.0 was going the effect the Metacritic score... who even uses Metacritic anymore
b. The 8.0 isn't even given by the reviewer on Pitchfork.. apparently they are assigned by committee..
oh well i guess we all have our causes...
-
I like meta critic! It’s a good aggregator of reviews

New El Goodo album Zombie is amazing, top 10 year end material for me for sure... loads of harmonies and 60s influences on this one...

tribute - Songs For Neil Vol. 1 will be released on September 12, which would have been the late Rush drummer Neil Peart's birthday.
The album features 12 covers of Rush songs, including Canadian singer songwriter Jacob Moon's version of Subdivisions and Brazilian prog-rock duo Fleesh who covered The Garden, and from Rush tribute bands from around the world

this latest Taylor Swift move to send a bunch of signed CDs to indie stores across the country amuses me... i saw once instance where the UPS gave the delivery to a customer waiting outside the closed store for said CD. luckily the customer did the right thing and didn't make off with that delivery... needless the say the shop owner was not impressed with UPS for letting a rando sign for a delivery...

"I am the Son of Sleep. All I need's an invitation"
If this is any indicator of a new album, I can imagine it being a solid reunion album on the level of Dino Jr or Mission of Burma.

I still have last year's 'Better Oblivion Community Center' (Connor oberst and Phoebe) on heavy rotation

It is funny to me how post BOCC, Pheobe inherited the trademark "Bright Eyes horn parts". It was such a stereotypical thing he did and now its on like three songs on her newest and mixed so close to the front on the closing track.
-
have to say it was a real bummer that 2020 killed the Bright Eyes/Lucy Dacus tour

PreOrdered the vinyl of King Khan and the Infinite
releases October 30, 2020
(https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1387239646_16.jpg)
Soulful garage rocker King Khan is getting into jazz and will release new album The Inifite Ones on October 30 via Ernest Jenning Record Co. The album features Sun Ra Arkestra's Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott, and Calexico's John Convertino and Martin Wenk. You can still tell it's a King Khan record, though, on the skronky and groovy "Wait Till the Stars Burn." (http://khannibalism.bandcamp.com/album/the-infinite-ones-2)

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/bruce-springsteen-and-e-street-band-release-emotional-letter-to-you-ahead-of-new-album
As has been the case for decades of new Springsteen this does nothing for me...
Probably the only thing I really like on it is the sound of Roy Bittan’s piano and maybe maybe Max’s drumming a bit...just cause they remind me of better days
The song has no real hook

Please Mr Robert Smith bring this out now!

I haven't listened to anything from this yet but it seems like Tweedy has been suffering from the Springsteen No Hook Disease you mention above for a while now.

It’s been almost 20 years since Midnight Oil unveiled a new longform release. That wait will finally be over on October 30 when their seven song mini-album, THE MAKARRATA PROJECT
Their show at the Fillmore a few years ago was outstanding. I still can't believe I couldn't give a free ticket away to that

I dunno man, I can't stand that guy's voice.

I dunno man, I can't stand that guy's voice.
I saw your post and decided to guess who you were referring to before going back a page.
So many to choose from. Guy from the Mountain Goats? Guy from Built to Spill? Guns N Roses? Rush?
All good guesses, I must admit. Then I scrolled back. And indeed, I do agree. He does have a repulsive voice.

Switching gears to something other than all day SOTT, I'm checking out Bette Smith - The Good, The Bad and The Bette which based on the cover art said hey this might something you'd be interested in... and yup some raucous soulful blues that's sounding pretty good... did a quick google and found it's produced by DBT Mike Patton and has appearance by Patterson Hood

AC/DC is my favorite band but am skeptical they can deliver something that holds up to my many favorite songs from them... but it’s always nice to hear their sound
-
The new AC/DC song is out... I hate to say it but everything sounds great yet it doesn’t do much for me...it just doesn’t have a strong hook..
Predictable

I need to hear more about the extra tracks. I have enough records coming in this month that I held off on this.

the second disc is a collection of demos for the album they did while Bob Stinson was still in the band and have the "classic" sound
third disc has what they call rough mixes done at Ardent Studios after Bob had left the band

Going to be called “McCartney III”

New goo goo dolls Christmas album!!

The new Springsteen album Letter to You is really solid. Much much better than Western Stars which I couldn't listen to more than once.

I think i used that phrase to describe the new Springsteen as well, though i think i also liked Western Stars (will have to go back and listen again to compare.)

Dude, I don’t buy/listen to the new stuff. Oceania was the last of their stuff I listened to.

Care far more about that Mellon collie anniversary tour if COVID ever ends.
-
This new Elvis Costello album is not at all what I was expecting.. it's far more adventurous in sound then I would expected from him, it sounds similar to what Jarvis Cocker and Baxter Dury have been doing of late.

Didn’t know he had a new one

I seem to recall both of us sitting at a bar in Philly after driving up from DC to see them like a decade after they were last relevant. . .
-
I saw them in Chicago for Mellon Collie
Rosemont?
A few years earlier I saw them at llola
William got very upset about flying water bottles
I probably already shared this

dude, when it comes to relevance, i don't think you want to hitch your wagon to mine.

I saw Corgan join Roger Waters on stage for some benefit thing a few years ago. His vocals on Brain Damage were freakishly chilling, and seem to hit a little too close to home for him.

Better but still missing the hook or break!
I also heard a bit from a third track
I think this album is going to be better than Rock or Bust which I found really disappointing

"The Symbol Remains" is the fifteenth studio album by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released on October 9, 2020.
(no word on how much cowbell it contains...)
-
Last year I was lucky enough to catch Buck Darma (writer, singer and lead guitarist on dftr) at pearl street dive of all places
he was was fantastic
Of course the guy who played the cow bell at that show was showered with attention... kinda sad too

I mean he IS BOC
And he penned and performed some epic tunes
But on that particular song he gets all the credit and the cow bell guy is the one who is famous

That is one weird band
The whole Patti Smith connection
Weird
