Title: The Afghanistan Thread Thread
Post by: sweetcell on August 17, 2021, 01:11:33 pm
since it's in the news, and we're arguing about it in random threads, here's once place to discuss both past and current collapses of the country... and what the future may hold.

these pix are crazy (apology if this has already been posted).  might be the most people to ever fly on a single plane.

can we blame Canada?
https://www.macleans.ca/opinion/canada-utterly-failed-in-afghanistan-why-cant-we-say-this-out-loud/

Over 40,000 Canadian soldiers served in Afghanistan, making it our largest military deployment since the Korean War. We spent $2.2 billion in assistance spending trying to rebuild the country–Canada’s largest aid program in history. And our diplomatic strategy around the world, for the better part of a decade, pivoted on the war, and what it meant to our alliances and bilateral relations.

Afghanistan was not a sideshow—it was the main event for Canada, for over a decade. And yet, we don’t talk about it. Ever.

the author makes $2.2 bil sound like a lot of money...

It was more a generalization of Afghani people vs the specific ones on the plane, but I have a hunch the people on that flight won't be so lucky either.

I mean it’s all relative… people on that plane won’t get their heads chopped off but what awaits them in America? Contrary to popular opinion it’s not exactly easy for anybody here…

I am so hoping the taliban will moderate their actions - some signs they might- but that might be wishful thinking

the author makes $2.2 bil sound like a lot of money...

for canada, it is considering its military spending.  canada spends more of its budget on social programs like healthcare, so there isn't as much left for military.  last year the country spent around $22B on military, in total.  having a nearly unlimited military budget, including lots of unreported funding (dark money), isn't something canadians are into...

Pentagon says Kabul airport is secure, plans to evacuate 5,000 to 9,000 people per day (https://news.yahoo.com/kabul-airport-secure-taliban-pentagon-evacuation-flights-180638067.html)
At a briefing in Washington, U.S. officials said that approximately 3,500 troops were on the ground at Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport as of Tuesday morning, with 500 more expected by the end of the day.

About 100,000 people, including American citizens and Afghans who qualify for so-called special immigrant visas, or SIVs, are believed to be seeking to leave the country.
so we haven't really left yet...isn't that number higher than what was there the week before?
Title: Re: The Afghanistan Thread Thread
Post by: Starsky on August 18, 2021, 01:45:17 pm
Well I suppose the number will grow and grow…You could probably find millions of Afghanis who would love to come here.

One thing about people living in developing countries: they imagine living here like we are all millionaires kicking back at the beach. They have no idea that at least half of Americans are struggling to get by.. that most Americans can’t even afford a few hundred dollars emergency…they see the movies…here the things we want them to believe…we don’t advertise that half our country loathes immigrants, for example… that upward mobility has become largely a myth

If someone offered you two tickets to paradise wouldn’t you take them?

West Baltimore born and raised
Hanging outside Pimlico was where I spent most of my days
Working out, staking my corner, defrauding a fool
Shooting up heroin outside a school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said you’re moving in with Hutch in Virginia somewhere!

The mujahideen resistance to the Taliban begins now. But we need help. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/08/18/mujahideen-resistance-taliban-ahmad-massoud/)
"I write from the Panjshir Valley today, ready to follow in my father’s footsteps, with mujahideen fighters who are prepared to once again take on the Taliban. We have stores of ammunition and arms that we have patiently collected since my father’s time, because we knew this day might come."

I whistled for a cab but Hutch was already near
His license plate said VINYL and there was dice in the mirror
I almost thought I should up and run
But I decided, "no forget it:" "yo, Homes - to Arlington!"
I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to Hutch 'Yo, Homes, smell ya later'
I looked at his couch, where his records were spun
Now it is my bed, as the Prince of Arlington

Yeah I remember that… I happen to agree with Hutch..even a stopped clock is right twice a day

My personal belief is we should take a good amount but not a huge amount…and the ones we don’t take we would work with our allies

Defining the exact amount is difficult not being privy to any estimate but I would be looking at the 20,000 to 50,000 range but circumstances will dictate

I stand by that and am glad we are doing so!

Some seem to feel we should take as many as want to come. I do not support that view…

The article was basically about Afghanis arriving but I believe most were continuing their journey

Hosting is different than welcoming

They say soon we will hit 100,000 evacuated…. It’s not clear to me what percentage are Afghanis or how many we expect to evacuate

I don’t think Biden wants to say…

Of course one should welcome any evacuees (once they are here I don’t think there can be much to argue about)

I have no idea what criteria they are using on determining who gets evacuated

No, no, its a great religion. Only Judeo-Christian religions suck; Islam and Hinduism are great and people who point out the flaws in these equally false belief structures are bigots.

starting to get worse quick
Multiple fatalities reported following two explosions outside Kabul airport, a Taliban spokesperson confirms
In a statement on Thursday, the Pentagon press secretary confirmed the two explosions outside Kabul Airport were the "result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties". A Taliban spokesperson confirmed 13 people including children have died. According to the BBC, one explosion was a suicide bombing near to the closed Abbey Gate where British troops had been stationed. The second explosion was close to the Baron Hotel, the Pentagon press secretary added.
