this is what a justice set should be like - in a dance club, not a concert venue, and packed but not so much so that ones has no space to dance. and speaking of, justice will be spinning at this same little club on thursday, after their show. i'm tempted to go - while i'm over justice's live show, i'd be interested in hearing what they spin. unfortunately they won't be behind the decks until midnight or 1 am, and i need to be functional the next day... dammit. might need to call upon ye olde disco nap.
new rule: Justice dj sets only.
as i've said before, i'm over their "live" show. but based on their dj set last night, these frenchies are still very relevant to my musical interests. they spun at the same small club (sonotheque) as SMD, which was just as packed, just as hot, and just as much fun. they played mostly classic house with elements of disco and hip hop thrown in. by "classic" i mean classic for me, because my personal "classic" period of clubbing was 95-98 and they sounds Justice provided came straight from that time for the most part. they dropped van Helden's "professional widow" remix, which i haven't heard in almost a decade - put a huge smile on my face. the highlight of their set, for me, was a screwed up remix of the stones' "you can't always get what your want" - genius. their souped-up version of "phantom #2" had people scrapping themselves off the ceiling afterwards.
a staple of any justice set is their breaking of local no-smoking ordinances and last night was no different. the DJ booth was mostly enclosed in plexiglass, so they and their entourage were essentially hot-boxing the booth with nicotine... SWEET. joe and rhett will be disappointed to learn that gaspard and xavier are not buff, in fact they are rather scrawny. they hung out in front of the club after their set and were very approachable. i was expecting otherwise, so a pleasant surprise.
i can't decide whose dj set i enjoyed more, SMD or justice's. last night had just a shred more energy, was a tad more visceral and a little less cerebral, but i have a very slight preference for the music that SMD spun. maybe. essentially a draw, both nights were excellent.
did someone say "justice"?!?
