I saw Richard Buckner open for Son Volt about seven years ago. I was actually sort of bored. Perhaps he has improved live. I do have his album "Since", and it is very good.
I saw the Handsome Family open for someone atthe Black Cat. Perhaps it was the Waco Brothers, I don't quite remember. They were quirky, but I think they are better on record (Celeste has one of their albums).
Jim White...don't really care for him at all.
Some upcoming alt-country shows I will recommend (all at Iota).
Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys...nobody does the rockabilly/swing thing better than him
Robbie Fulks...even if you don't care for alt-country, I guarantee you'd enjoy this guy live....so much energy, talent, and bitingly clever between song wit...
Trailer Bride: Celeste likes them more than I do, but they play a decidedly quirky, interesting mix. And the girl singer is hot, in an offbeat sort of way.
Dale Watson: old school honky tonk, ala Dwight Yoakam, Wayne Hancock, or BR549
