I tried to watch Snowpiercer twice and couldn't make it to the end without giving up. I didn't see why it was so well-regarded; but then again, I am not big on sci-fi or graphic novels.

I've heard nothing but amazing things about Snowpiercer. It just went up on Netflix over the weekend. It's been on my list. Rotten Tomatoes has it up to 95%, if that means anything to you. I watched the trailer after seeing The Hunger Games and thought it kind of looked the same. Except a train is involved. Still, I've heard great things. Will also be heading out opening day to see Interstellar.

Saw it. Was underwhelmed. Like a fucked up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Too many holes and so predictable!
I'll give it a shot. It was weird seeing Hunger Games then seeing that trailer. All I could think of was "So, Hunger Games, minus the games, plus a train?"

Also so Purge 2: whatever it's called, I like the concept, but it's more of a Thriller/Adventure than a Horror movie to me. I could see these going on for years like the Saw series though. Seeing as how the 2nd ends with....well, no spoilers... Also saw "House Of The Devil" it has an insanely creepy build up, but was underwhelmed by the ending.

I'm interested in giving Snowpiercer a chance although its definitely not a genre I usually enjoy. Glad for the heads up its on Netflix now. I think Nebraska hits Netflix this week as well which I've wanted to see.

Nebraska is the last really really good movie I saw. Loved it.

Snowpiercer is less Hunger Games+train and more Willy Wonka+end of the world+train

Whiplash was as intense as it sounds like it will be.  Definitely delivered.  Liked it quite a lot.

I was hoping for more action in this movie. Tom Hardy is awesome in it though. Was kind of let down, but it's worth a view.

Need to catch: Nightcrawler, St Vincent, and Fury.

Over the weekend:

1. Snowpiercer: I'm not a sci-fi guy by any means, but I really enjoyed this. I guess I am a fan of a well made popcorn thriller, and for me, this is what it was. We broke it down into three viewing segments (60-10-55, more a function of having a kid than something that was necessitated by the film), maybe that helped.

2. Witching and Bitching: One review said this was "the best Almodovar film not made by Almodovar", and another said it was a combination heist/horror/comedy. I started watching with low expectations (nobody is as good as Almodovar, I hate most horror movies), but ended up being completely entertained.

3. The Tale of Princess Kaguya: My daughter and wife are the Japanese animation film fans in the family, I just tagged along to the theater. My daughter said she liked it, but she clearly wasn't as enthused as she was about some of the Miyazaki films, not to mention Frozen (though she clearly liked it better than that awful Lego Movie!). My wife (and I) agreed with the WashPo reporter that the film was too long and the plot too thin. It would have been better at 90 minutes rather than 135.
