is it me or does this sound like an epic train wreck in the making

Greta Gerwig will next collaborate with Noah Baumbach in co-writing and potentially directing a live-action Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie in the title role.

I know those two are supposed to be critical darlings, but I haven't liked a single film either of them have made.

Well but you kind of hate everything and everybody

Not true, I have posted many films I liked in this thread.

a barbie movie can only go one of two ways, and both are indeed awful:

1) they'll continue with barbie's 1950's era fantasy: a vapid blond that just wants to have simplistic fun.  awful for obvious reasons.

2) they attempt to rehabilitate barbie's image as a supposedly modern, intelligent, empowered woman - ignoring her history of fostering horrible mental and physical stereotypes of women.  i suspect this is the tact they'll take.

you have to wonder who this movies is targeting.  neither my 7 y.o. daughter nor any of her friend have any interest in barbie.  as far as i know they don't even own any (i can confirm this after spending the past week of winter break supervising play-dates).  if they're going to tap into mom's nostalgia for her childhood toys... not sure how that is going to work.

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople.  On Netflix.  Same director as did Jojo Rabbit, and What We Do in the Shadows.  Also documentary on HBO called Class Action Park, about a water park in NJ in the 1980s is excellent; especially for us older guys who grew up without the parental/adult supervision we see today.

Thumbs up on all three of those.

Why do you think that? I didn't hate it , but for me it was disappointingly only pretty good. I felt like I was watching a decent documentary, I wanted more of a plot and less character study.

This was great. Love Kelly Reichart. Certain Women was my favorite film from . . . whatever year it came out.
