Levels of popularity mean nothing to me when it comes to the music I enjoy. The part of prog I don't like are the gigantic guitar solos, songs with 35 parts that go on for 35 minutes, etc. Actually, the part of Rush I don't like are his vocals. It's just my opinion but they do nothing for me.
As Porcupine Tree's career has evolved, they have been refining their music to make shorter, to-the-point songs. The prog element is still there but the songs are much easier on the ear to the common fan. Some people would call that selling out, but for me, it's made their music more concise and enjoyable.
