just because i'm young doesn't mean i'm pushing a cash register somewhere. i'm 23 and have a professional career. my folks are more than 6 hours away and i live on my own and pay my rent, my car, etc. i don't have some huge credit card debt and have money going into my 401K. maybe i'm not making six figures, but that's no reason to not enjoy spending a chunk of my income on what i love and enjoy the most?

i suppose it'd be better spent on blow?

Maybe some people get money from their parents, too.

my primary form of entertainment. [/b]
I understand it's the primary entertainment, but surely there are additional costs? (drinks, food, fees, travel expenses, etc.) Going to a show everyday can tax one's wallet, that's for sure. Perhaps, "primary hobby" might be the better word choice? And, it helps not to have kids, non?   :D
I mean, what is it costing to raise a child these days, Rhett? $7M?

I've never, in my life, seen young people lie more than about money.  Apparently the worst insult to them is that "Mommy and Daddy" are supporting their lifestyle.  I've seen countless students who attend $35,000+/a year secondary institutions swear that they are paying for it "themselves.  My Mom and Dad don't pay ANYTHING."  Which is such a lie.

I'm not calling miss hooker a liar.  I'm just saying young people boast (lie) about their financial "independence" more than anything else.  Apparently every twenty-something owns their own home and is pulling in $85+ a year.

Note I said good job...  I own my place, put as much as I'm allowed by law away in a 401K, have savings.  So there are a few shows that are $50, $60, $100 -- that really doesn't add up to all that much in a year when you consider it's my primary form of entertainment. [/b]
[/b]
Are you talking about me?  I probably spend 25% of my income on shows and traveling.  But I have no kids, no student loans, no debt other than mortgages which are self sustaining, and no other obvious expensive habits other cd buying, ie. no cigarettes, moderate alcohol consumption, etc.

My priorities might be seemingly a little warped for someone my age, but I'm basically just doing the stuff I was doing at 18, its' just that can afford a whole lot more of it at 38, and it must be ok for my health because I'll still get carded mostly by people I have at least 10 years on, but are aging far faster than me.

I credit west coast ethos, and music for the fountain of youth...oh and not being bitter at others for going to shows.

Not much, when you have them making their own concert t-shirts.   :D

I'm actually patting myself on the back for finding a $350 jogging stroller on craigslist for $50 and the next day finding another one at a thrift store for $15!

Well I congratulate you on your financial good fortune.

I came to DC, age 30, with an eight year old car, and $2000 savings, no 401K, and that was about it...so you're doing better than me. That was due to poor earnings rather than big spendings.

My advice would be to start putting away some money for a down payment on a house/condo so that you're no longer a slave to the landlord, and so that you can pay cash on a car and not have to pay interest!

Winning the "Miss Pink Taco" contest is hardly a career.  But I applaud you nonetheless.

well, it's annoying when it's assumed that a 20something can't live on their own. i graduated from college two years ago - that's plenty of time to have my shit straight.

i never said i owned a house... i said i pay my rent - big difference. also, i didn't spend $35k a year on school... less than half that at a state university. and you know, my folks paid that - gladly. just because my folks paid for my schooling doesn't mean i (or anyone else for that matter) can't take care myself otherwise.

why are you so bitter about everything anyway?

When I was in my early twenties I sure as hell wasn't going to waste my youth worrying about some abstract notion of "my future."  I spent like there was no tomorrow -- records, concerts, drinks, drugs, whatever. And, if there was anything left over, then some bills got paid.

If I had to do it all over again, I would make the same choices.
